Daily News Thai Caption: Nothing left at all What should have been a dream home for an old lady has turned into a nightmare for an Ayutthaya woman and her family. Manita Pinyophasakun, 49, and her relatives bought a bungalow for her mother's golden years but the lady got sick and needed to be hospitalized in Bangkok. But while she was away the thieves moved in. At first just a few things went missing and the Bang Pa-In police were informed and did a cursory investigation. Picture: Daily News Subsequently the thieves completely gutted the place removing things like doors, windows, electrical infrastructure and gates. The property on Rojana Road is now a complete wreck. Picture: Daily News A local security guard at a neighboring estate called the police many times to report theft but the cops were always too late to catch anyone. They allegedly ended up telling Manita: "If you're not living there why don't you sell the place?" Manita hopes that by going to Daily News - who recorded a 10 minute video - she might get some joy from the constabulary. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-09 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Picture: Thai Rath Thai Rath reported on developments in the case of an alleged extortion racket of bars and clubs in Bangkok by a tourist policeman and his associate. The pair were picked up in a sting opposite Central Westgate in Nonthaburi yesterday, as reported on ASEAN NOW. Yesterday morning the policeman - Sen Sgt Maj Phuwamet Hiranwongwaradol and Manas Suksong were interrogated for two hours by Bang Yai deputy Lt-Col Somchai Orraphakdee. The policeman was charged with extortion and offences related to abusing his position while Manas was charged with extortion and impersonating an officer. They denied extortion but they admitted collecting money. Yesterday it was reported that 100,000 baht was found in Manas's car after the sting, so it was hard to deny that, notes ASEAN NOW. But they said that the ringleader of the racket was a man called Pae, 44, who the policeman met during his time at the tourist police in Pattaya. Pol Maj-Gen Phaisan Wongwatcharamongkhol, chief of the Nonthaburi police, said the man they were referring to was Suwan Mongkholphanichakul or Pae, 44. His address in Bang Bua Thong is known and an arrest warrant is being sought. The chief promised justice for all. Relatives of the tourist policeman turned up with 200,000 baht money to bail him out but this was denied. He was handed over to the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission along with his tourist police car. Both men were pictured leaving the station in handcuffs. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-09 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. UPDATE: Negative reaction and horror at Thailand’s plan to charge foreigners more than locals at hotels by Joseph O' Connor The controversial plan to charge foreign travellers to Thailand more at hotels than locals was announced by government spokesperson Trisulee Traisanakul on Wednesday. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1265377-thai-hoteliers-express-concerns-over-government’s-proposal-of-“dual-pricing”-for-foreign-tourists/?do=findComment&comment=17470005 -
Negative reaction and horror at Thailand’s plan to charge foreigners more than locals at hotels by Joseph O' Connor The controversial plan to charge foreign travellers to Thailand more at hotels than locals was announced by government spokesperson Trisulee Traisanakul on Wednesday. Reactions to the plan have been adverse from the industry with concerns about the impact of the image the proposal creates around the world with both regular visitors to Thailand and those considering visiting the kingdom for the first time. The proposal is also disturbing for the kingdom’s foreign residents because of the message it sends to other business concerns and operators. The bombshell announcement this week is bound to generate antipathy and concern among foreigners both inside and without Thailand. It goes against all principles of modern customer service as well as international business practices and will ultimately undermine the goal of the government which is to assist the full recovery of Thailand’s foreign tourism sector which the World Bank predicts will not fully recover until 2026 but which has been improving in recent months with an easing of regulations imposed on it by the government, moves which had generated renewed optimism and confidence. The announcement by the Thai government this week that it was moving to introduce a two-tier pricing structure for foreigners and locals at hotels across the kingdom has been received negatively by key players in the foreign tourism industry with real fears that the initiative may cause damage to efforts to maximise incoming visitors this year because of the negative message being sent to foreign travellers, many of whom are regular holiday makers to the kingdom and have shown loyalty towards it over the decades. The move will equally put off potential new travellers to the country as it undermines internationally recognised standards of customer service and equal treatment expected by tourists the world over. There has been a less than enthusiastic response from the Thai hotel industry to the proposal floated on Wednesday by the government to charge foreigners a higher tariff than locals in a measure designed to boost foreign tourism income for the troubled industry despite the optimism in recent weeks that a recovery was playing out with a jump in the number of arrivals. By Panithan Onthaworn The Bank of Thailand (BoT) said on Friday that it would allow the baht to fluctuate in line with market factors. However, action is required if the currency witnesses extreme volatility, it said. This week the baht has weakened to its lowest level in almost seven years, approaching 36.32 baht against the US dollar. BoT senior director Daranee Saeju said in a briefing that the baht has weakened modestly in comparison to regional currencies, and this has been driven by the rise of the US dollar.
