By the beginning of September after a 120 day waiting period following an announcement in the Government Gazette, parents must secure children aged less than 6 using a car seat or face a 2,000 baht fine. Devices known as booster seats can also be used for older children. Thai Rath went to Robinson's in Prachinburi where there is the only car seat retailer in the area. Staff noted that inquiries about car seats were up 10% since the news broke. Most customers were concerned about fitting the seats in older pick-ups with many having to install seat belts to secure the car seats in the first place. Others were concerned about those with large numbers of children being unable to cope. And of course the cost of the seats was a major factor for those on low incomes - in the store seats were available for about 2,000 to 12,000 baht. Mum Prarathana, 29, said she has three children, two under 6. She said the law change was a good idea but she would wait and see if the law was actually enforced. She told reporters that her children are always secured with regular seat belts. Retail spokesman Panyaphon said there were supply problems. He helpfully stated that if a family had two kids and needed two seats at 2,000 baht that would be 4,000 baht. Meanwhile Dr Opas Kankawinpong of the Department of Disease Control - a top doctor involved in the pandemic - took time off Covid-19 to comment on the issue. He said that newborns to 3 year olds should face rearwards while 2-6 year olds can face forwards. Older children can use booster seats, he said. Some have gone back already but the bulk of students will be starting the first of two semesters next Tuesday, May 17th. The police said that 1,277 schools are going back with 800,000 pupils travelling from home. 2,000 traffic cops will be mobilized on Tuesday from 5 am. Special patrols will rove around in the case of rain or flooding adding to the potential gridlock. ASEAN NOW notes that Bangkok's traffic is always noticeably worse when the schools go back. Police said it could have been high speed, unfamiliarity with the road, "lap nai" or microsleep, or playing on the phone. The victim was not even wearing a seatbelt. His comment was heard at a recent seminar “Thailand’s Strategy: Creating Sustainability in the Global Stage.” He said that currently there are two major global factors affecting the export sector in Thailand. The first factor is the political divide and geopolitical issues that force countries to choose sides. This is becoming more apparent after the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Minister Jurin noted that two highly populated nations China and India will likely play a more crucial economic role in the future. It is necessary for Thailand to be able to navigate carefully in the new era, and continue to work with allies in the ASEAN bloc to improve its bargaining power. Two teens - aged 19 and 18 - at least one of whom was armed with a knife, were caught on video making trouble at the hospital's ER room. They were annoyed at the treatment a friend was being given. After they hurled insults for a long time at staff in the ER they walked outside and had an altercation with other staff processing patients at the front of the hospital. A person was kicked and a shoe was thrown. Police soon had the assailants in custody and two knives were taken into evidence. Police are gathering evidence from the CCTV and hospital reports and charges of assault, attempted assault, having knives in public and trespass on state property are in the pipeline. In latest news on the case the parents and relatives of the two young men took them to the hospital to apologize where senior nurse Sachchuta Petchsuk received their wais. But it was a half hearted apology noted Thai Rath who said that the assailants' showed absolutely no remorse and simply walked off brushing aside the arms of hospital staff. Picture: Thai Rath Two Thai transgender men have been arrested following a string of robberies of foreign tourists in the Sukhumvit Road area of Bangkok. A Kuwaiti, two British men and a Chinese national were victims in thefts from hotel rooms where drugs were used to incapacitate the victims. Hundreds of thousands of baht was stolen along with a Rolex and iPhone. The theft that helped to break the case was reported on by ASEAN NOW back towards the end of March when a Kuwaiti fireman went to the Lumpini police saying he had taken 2 ladyboys back to his room while in Thailand looking after his sick mother, reported Thai Rath. Metropolitan chief Pol Lt-Gen Samran Nuanma said at a press conference at met HQ yesterday that Lumpini police had utilized CCTV to arrest the suspects. The ladyboys had drugged the Kuwaiti in room 411 on the fourth floor of Gulliver's Tavern in Soi 5. He was robbed of $US 6,000 or about 200,000 baht. Blood and urine tests done by the police hospital of the victim and fluids found at the scene indicated sleeping pills had been used in the crime. Chadaporn Ormsin, 28, was arrested at the weekend in the Phasi Charoen area while 26 year old Sipa Thiankrajang was nabbed in the Plum Condo in Bang Yai, Nonthaburi. They were both named in warrants for robbing and drugging the tourists. Chadaporn admitted to the latest theft and three more. The first was on January 5th at the Hyde Condo in Soi 13 when he stole 80,000 baht from a British tourist that he drugged. The third incident happened in the Phrakhanong police area on 19th April in Soi 50 at the Mono Condo when a Chinese national lost a Rolex, a 13 Pro Max iPhone and a quantity of cash. Chadaporn had also served jail time in 2019 and 2021 for assault.
