Picture: Sanook A story getting a lot of interest in the Thai press raises the question as to whether it is worth being a Good Samaritan in Thailand. At 2.34 am on Monday a woman called Bang-orn was riding with her son on a motorcycle when she came across a vehicle in a ditch, reported Sanook. It appeared to have been an accident. In reality a man called Photipong, 38, the driver, had consumed six cans of beer and was very drunk. He had been trying to execute a U-turn when he went into the ditch with his back wheels unable to get traction because they were dangling in the air. Bang-orn asked him if he was OK then reached for her phone to call 191. Photipong told Nam Phiang Din police in Muang district of Mae Hong Son in the far north of Thailand that he knew he was drunk and was worried about the consequences if the police got involved. He said he pushed the woman over then fled the scene in a panic. Asked by the press about an army sticker on his vehicle he said he was a cable installer who had done work for the military. She said she intended to help but instead Photipong grabbed her throat and bashed her on the back of the head causing her to fall. He ground her head into the ground and grabbed her sarong. Her bike was also damaged. She said can hardly walk , has dizzy spells and intends to see that Photpong is prosecuted to the full extent of the law. She said that she would be seeking full compensation for her injuries both physical and mental. At one point it looked like he might kill himself by hitting a crossing truck. But in reality he was putting on a show for some young girls who had asked him, he later told Muang Maha Sarakham police deputy Pol Lt-Col Krissada Nitiphot. They had taken Ek in for questioning along with his bike. It has a sign on its side intimating that the rider is a "holy spirit" and a message of love for a woman "despite going our separate ways", pinned to the basket. He said: "Some young girls asked for a show so I gave them one. "If I've been drinking it helps with my riding - though I was sober on this occasion. The minister said yesterday that new measures have been put in place for overseas arrivals and airlines. They are: • Fully vaccinated passengers can enter Thailand without any COVID-19 testing upon arrival. Passengers are, however, advised to take rapid antigen tests if they develop any symptoms. • Any passenger who is not vaccinated or partially vaccinated can take an RT-PCR test within 72 hours of departure and can enter Thailand without testing upon arrival. If the passenger does not have the negative pre-departure test result upon arrival, they will be subject to quarantine of 5 days and will undergo an RT-PCR test on the 4th or 5th day during the quarantine. • Every visitor must have COVID-19 insurance coverage of no less than US$10,000 valid throughout their stay in Thailand. Yuthasak Supasorn, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), said a meeting will soon be held to discuss the details of the initiative. Concerning funding for the program, he said any budget remaining from the current phase will be used to help fund the next iteration. He also noted that requests for additional funding can be proposed to the government if necessary. The new terms could see the government subsidizing 40% of accommodations, providing as much as 3,000 baht per night for 2 million slots, with participating hotels subsidizing the remaining 2 million slots. The program is expected to help increase the number of travelers this year to 160 million people, generating 656 billion baht of revenue. The minister said that now it has been decided to scrap Test and Go there is no going back. In future the criteria for entering Thailand will be the internationally recognised method of Vaccine Passports. Picture: Thai Rath Khao Saming police were called to the Khao Saming to Sa Yai Road in Trat in eastern Thailand after a Toyota Fortuner collided head on with a Toyota pick-up yesterday evening around 7.30 pm. The driver of the Fortuner had been trying to overtake a motorcycle with sidecar attachment. The driver tried to get back into his lane after apparently misjudging the move but clipped the motorcycle and ended up in the path of the oncoming vehicle. Dead inside the pick-up were 30 year old Patcharaphol, an electrician, and 40 year old Prasong. The Fortuner driver was also dead at the scene and named as 69 year old Wuthiwat.
