Picture: Siam Rath Muang district police and rescue services in Udon Thani in NE Thailand were called after a Myanmar construction worker was run over by a train. It happened near a construction site in the vicinity of the Nong Bua market junction. The victim was dressed in a singlet and sarong. Mya Win, 28, had horrific head injuries. There was a bottle of alcohol near the mangled body. A Thai colleague, Udorn, 28, said that he had seen his friend doing what he often did - play on his phone with his head propped up on the rails. Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe He thought nothing of this and had a shower and went to bed. He was alerted with the news of what had happened and called the authorities. The police said that it appeared that the man was so engrossed in his phone that he had not heard the arrival of the #417 diesel service that had left Korat at 3.55 pm and was due in at Udon Thani at 9 pm. The Myanmar embassy and relatives were being informed, reported Siam Rath who reminded their readers of the folly of lying on the tracks. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-05-06 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. by Krajangwit Johjit BANGKOK (NNT) - The Special Economic Zone Policy Committee has approved four new special economic corridors, modeled after the flagship Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), in an effort to stimulate the economy and decentralize income. Danucha Pichayanan, secretary-general of the National Economic and Social Development Council, said the new zones comprise the Northern Economic Corridor (NEC), the Northeastern Economic Corridor (NEEC), the Central-Western Economic Corridor (CWEC), and the Southern Economic Corridor. The NEC covers the provinces of Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, and Lampang. The NEEC comprises Khon Kaen, Udon Thani, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Nong Khai provinces. Due to the area’s abundant raw materials, such as rice, tapioca, and sugar cane, this corridor is expected to serve as a production base for the bio-economy and its supply chain. Keep up to date with all things Thailand - Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe Meanwhile, Ayutthaya, Nakhon Pathom, Suphan Buri, and Kanchanaburi are all included in the CWEC. The corridor is intended to serve as a manufacturing base for agriculture, tourism, and high technology. Chumphon, Ranong, Surat Thani, and Nakhon Si Thammarat are all included in the southern corridor. The corridor serves as the southern region’s economic, trading, and logistics hub and connects the Andaman Sea, the Gulf of Thailand, and Indian Ocean-rim countries such as India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. According to Anucha, the committee also authorized the Finance Ministry’s permanent secretary to chair a subcommittee to establish non-tax and tax investment incentives, one-stop services, infrastructure, and facilities to attract investors. Incentives and investment categories for the four corridors will be proposed at the Board of Investment’s next meeting. -- © Copyright NNT 2022-05-06 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Sanook Thai Caption: Stuffed posts Sanook reported on what they called a drama in Nan in the north of Thailand. Roadside marker posts made of rubber stuffed with bamboo on a three kilometer stretch of the Nan to Mae Jarin Road. The highway authorities decided to help the rubber industry by replacing old concrete posts with new rubber ones. Since 2021 they have put in 2,806 of them at a cost of 2,050 baht each. The idea is that they would be safer if cars hit them in accidents. It was reckoned they would last for up to 4 years. The bamboo is meant to give them stability. Keep up to date with all things Thailand - Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe Picture: Sanook However, there has been an unforseen problem because of farmers burning their fields and the flames spreading to the bollards and damaging them. Some of them have been burned down or knocked over. Others needed a lick of paint. Now highway deputy Niran Khlongngam and his teams were out making repairs. He assured the Thai public that they were meant to be like this - there was no corruption involved "for sure". A video published by the media showed how the posts were meant to wobble. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-05-06 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. by Krajangwit Johjit BANGKOK (NNT) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is making preparations to declare Covid-19 an endemic disease following the recent drop in daily infections and fatalities. According to Dr. Kiattiphum Wongrajit, Permanent Secretary for the Public Health Ministry, the Covid-19 situation in Bangkok has improved significantly due to vaccination rollout and measures such as home isolation and outpatient programs. Most Bangkok residents are fully vaccinated, with around 60 percent having at least 1 booster dose. These figures suggested that Bangkok might be ready to shift its strategy to managing Covid-19 as an endemic disease. Keep up to date with all things Thailand - Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe Dr. Kiattiphum stated that the Ministry of Public Health is currently working with BMA departments to gradually lift Covid-19 restrictions. The shift will prioritize management in high infection risk areas such as pubs, bars, public parks, and public transportation, allowing for a more gradual transition to endemic Covid management. Before Songkran, authorities expressed concern that the number of infections would exceed 100,000 daily cases after the holidays. The number of cases, however, was lower than expected, with daily fatality cases decreasing in recent days. -- © Copyright NNT 2022-05-06 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Investors Warned to be Wary of Investment Scams by Krajangwit Johjit BANGKOK (NNT) - Public and private agencies have warned people to be wary of investment scams while urging investors to conduct extensive research before making an investment decision. by Krajangwit Johjit BANGKOK (NNT) - Public and private agencies have warned people to be wary of investment scams while urging investors to conduct extensive research before making an investment decision. According to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Federation of Thai Capital Market Organizations (Fetco), criminal groups have been found to impersonate asset management companies, financial institutions, or securities companies in order to lure people to invest in their scams. Some individuals seek to increase their credibility by illegally using names, images, and business logos that belong to the SEC. The SEC and Fetco advised investors to carefully examine the information given by these scamming groups before investing. The agencies noted that signs such as illogical return rates, unclear return sources, risk-free guarantee claims, or returns from inviting others to invest should not be ignored. Other red flags include a lack of verifiable reference sources in financial assets or requests to deposit funds into a personal account that does not report or notify the investors during the transfer. Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol, the SEC’s secretary-general, warned that investors will not be protected by law if they are found to be associated with unlicensed groups. She emphasized that when consumers are approached to invest in any business, they should request verification of an SEC-approved registration number and consult with reliable sources for product details. Investors are also urged to check the list of people with licensed businesses and securities on the SEC Check First application. The list can be found in the mobile app or on the SEC Check First Page at www.sec.or.th. -- © Copyright NNT 2022-05-06 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
