Exploring the origins of the Chalom logo offers some charming travels, and more exciting journeys further afield. TAT Newsroom Bangkok – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) would like to invite tourists to discover the origins and inspiration behind the official logo for APEC 2022 Thailand – the Chalom – as in doing so, this will also open the doors to discovering some of the kingdom’s many fascinating local tourism experiences. Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor, said “There are charming cultural experiences on offer to tourists who explore the story behind the APEC 2022 Thailand logo, and beyond this yet more wonderful, unique and easily reached experiences in some of Thailand’s most well-known destinations.” A Chalom is a woven basket that is used to carry or as a package for produce, and it has been part of the Thai way of life for many generations. Made from bamboo strands – a strong, flexible and durable material – it represents the strong ties of the Thai and global economy, as they aim towards a strong, prosperous and sustainable economy. Behind the making of a Chalom, the intriguing art of basketry can be found in vibrant practice in many communities throughout Thailand. While the main procedure and methods are generally the same, some communities have their own signature weaving techniques that make their products unique from others. There are three such local communities, where the visitor can enjoy an authentic experience in weaving. In addition, there is much more that tourists visiting these communities can also enjoy in the same and nearby provinces. 1. Phanat Nikhom Community in Chon Buri Province – One of Thailand’s largest manufacturers of woven handicrafts, this ancient community offers weaving demonstrations and one of the world’s largest weaving and handicraft markets. Keep up to date with all things Thailand - Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe A trip to Phanat Nikhom Community, for example, can be combined with a trip to Chon Buri province’s famous seafood spot of Bang Saen for the seaside restaurants serving delicious and fresh ‘catches of the day’, visits to popular off-shore islands like Ko Lan and Ko Si Chang with their inviting beaches, and time spent exploring the various nature and themed parks; such as, Khao Khiao Open Zoo and Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden. Then of course there’s Pattaya, Chon Buri province’s most famed attraction and an essential must-visit for any trip to Thailand. Great beaches, bustling nightlife, fantastic cuisine, and a myriad of attractions and fun activities for the whole family are all on offer in this energetic seaside resort city. Further along the Gulf of Thailand coastline and easily reached by road from Chon Buri are the provinces of Rayong – famous for its own (and quieter) beaches, sumptuous seafood, Rayong Aquarium and the idyllic island getaway of Ko Samet; Chanthaburi – known for its fruit production most notably that of delicious mangosteen, longan, rambutan and durian, and Trat – an island hopper’s dream with a multitude of islands including the three popular spots of Ko Chang, Ko Kut, and Ko Mak. 2. Ban Don Tanot Community in Sing Buri Province – Walking around local farms and cooking local dishes here, as well as learning the art of weaving with the villagers, offers a charming look into the local lifestyle and ways of life. Among Sing Buri province’s other attractions on offer to those visiting the Ban Don Tanot Community are the various temples including Wat Phikun Thong famed for its huge seated Buddha – the biggest Buddha image in this particular pose in Thailand – and Wat Phra Non Chakkrasi Worawihan with its nearly 50-metre reclining Buddha statue, the traditional art form of shadow puppetry at the Nang Yai Museum, and tasty local dishes like the Chinese cake of khanom pia, kun chiang sausage and pla chon Mae La, a striped snakehead fish found in the Mae La River. On the way from Bangkok to the Central province of Sing Buri is Ayutthaya – one of Thailand’s most famous destinations, a former capital of Siam and today a UNESCO World Heritage Site – while neighbouring Sing Buri to the east is Lop Buri province, where the provincial seat of the same name is famed for its free-roaming wild monkey population. 3. Ban Laem Community in Suphan Buri Province – The community-based tourism and homestay experiences available here reflect the locals’ deep connection with water, and include boat rides and learning how to weave water hyacinth into various local products. Suphan Buri province neighbours Sing Buri to the west and for those visiting Ban Laem Community, this province also offers fascinating temples such as Wat Pa Lelai Worawihan and Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat, which holds one of the most revered and copied Buddha images in Thailand – the Phra Phuttha Chinnarat, the intriguing Dragon Descendants museum and Celestial Dragon Village, Thai Water Buffalo Preservation Village, the lush forest and mountains of Pu Toei National Park, and Banharn Jamsai Tower, which at 123.25 metres is considered the highest viewpoint tower in Thailand. To the west of Suphan Buri is Kanchanaburi province, known for its national parks offering dramatic landscapes of jungle, waterfalls, and limestone caves, and the infamous Burma Railway, Bridge over the River Kwai, Allied war cemeteries, Hellfire Pass, and other historical links to World War II. Thailand’s theme for its hosting of the APEC 2022 is “Open. Connect. Balance.” At the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in November 2022, Thailand will propose the “Bangkok Goals on BCG Economy” to serve as an affirmation of the 21 APEC nations’ commitment to pursue a more inclusive, balanced, and sustainable recovery from COVID-19 pandemic and achieve long-term environmental and climate objectives. Meanwhile, the 11th APEC Tourism Ministerial Meeting and the 60th APEC Tourism Working Group Meeting will take place in Bangkok from 14-20 August, 2022. By Veena Thoopkrajae with additional report by SukhumapornLaiyok Oceans are amazing. Covering more than 70 percent of Earth’s surface, they are among the most valuable natural resources that keep us alive in many different ways. But unfortunately, this big blue planet is under threat of global warming and pollution, particularly involving plastics. Footage of coral bleaching, images of a huge amount of plastic waste accumulating in oceans, and reports of a decline in marine life are among the visible signs of environmental decline. Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe In Thailand, baby dugong Marium died as a result of ingesting plastic. A dead green turtle in Chumporn had plastic bags and other plastic waste in its stomach. A stranded whale found in Songkhla had 80 plastic bags in its belly, weighing 8 kgs. Coral reefs in Krabi’s Maya Bay, famously featured in the hit movie “The Beach”, were degraded by warmer seas and overcrowding. Oil spills from a pipeline blackened sand on Mae Ramphueng beach in Rayong. It also killed wedge clams, a biological indicator of pollution, and affected crustaceans found in the area. And stronger storms driven by global climate change are leading to more erosion and even more intense harmful algal blooms. (Image captured and colorized at NIAID’s Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML) in Hamilton, Montana) Thailand’s Center for Medical Genomics (CMG) at Ramathibodi hospital has issued a warning about a new Omicron sub-variant, BA.2.12.1, which is becoming more prevalent in the US, accounting for roughly 20% of all new cases across America, and believed to be highly contagious. Citing a report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), issued on Tuesday, the CMG said that BA.2.12.1 is estimated to be 23% to 27% more transmissible than its predecessor BA.2 and is fuelling a resurgence in COVID cases in upstate New York. Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe The CMG warned, in its Facebook post on Wednesday that, although BA.1 has almost disappeared and BA.2 cases are slowing in Thailand, attention should be shifted to BA.2.12, which is already spreading in Thailand and may mutate into BA.2.12.1, as detected in upstate New York. If Thailand is getting tougher for expats, how about Vietnam? by Michael Bridge Pollution, Covid entry restrictions, health insurance requirements and ever-changing immigration rules, are making many expats reconsider the merits of being a resident in Thailand. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1257481-if-thailand-is-getting-tougher-for-expats-how-about-vietnam/ -
by Michael Bridge Pollution, Covid entry restrictions, health insurance requirements and ever-changing immigration rules, are making many expats reconsider the merits of being a resident in Thailand. So how about considering moving to Vietnam? According to Numbeo’s ranking, the largest website in the global price data field, Vietnam ranks 86th in the world but sixth in Southeast Asia in terms of cost of living. Their survey results show that Vietnam ranks in the position with the lowest cost of living for foreigners. Ninety-three percent of foreigners living and working in Vietnam said they have enough or more money than they need to cover their lives. According to one AseanNow viewer, he said he had just come back from HCMC, where he had an offer of a 1-year visa there for $450. That alone was a tempting reason not to bother coming back to Thailand! He did add though that the wife, son, dog, cats, fish & plants all disagreed with me. Of course, lifestyle is as important, as is a low cost of living. Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe In the past, it would be fair to say most expats especially those working in Vietnam chose the two main cities Hanoi and HCMC (formerly Saigon) as their base. However, now that Vietnam has invested heavily in its infrastructure, resorts and destinations, many savvy expats especially retirees are becoming a bit more adventurous in their choice of final destination. Similar to the resorts of Hua Hin, Phuket, and Chang Mai, there are other options away from the city crowds in Vietnam. Not everyone wants or needs to live in a big city, so here are a few alternatives to consider. Da Lat Da lat – is a cool place to live in Vietnam. Although the job opportunities are not as many as those in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh city, this old city blessed with great atmosphere and landscape, Da Lat is also among the best places to live in Vietnam. When the French were running the country, they chose Da Lat for its cooler summer temperatures as it is approx. 1,500 metres above sea level, so is cool all year round. Da Lat is known as the miniature Paris, the city in the fog, the city of love, the valley of thousands of flowers, and the city of pine forest. When arriving here, visitors will feel many unforgettable impressions. Located on Lam Vien plateau, Da Lat has long become an attractive tourist paradise for domestic and foreign tourists. This place is like a giant air conditioner running all year round with moderate heat. The annual average temperature fluctuates around 20 degrees Celsius, so it is very suitable as a resort. Besides natural beauty, this city is also famous for works imbued with luxurious and noble French architecture. Up to now, Da Lat has preserved and maintained hundreds of old villas, and even the street signs are blue similar to any French town. Da Nang Many people think that Da Nang is a place worth living for because of a clean environment, low pollution, diverse service models, abundant living standards and stable infrastructure. In 2011, Da Nang won the ASEAN award for “Environmentally Sustainable City”. However, one reason many tend to retire here is because of the likes of Nicklaus, Faldo, Norman, or Donald who have all created some exceptional fine golf courses around the region. Da Nang also boosts a series of famous tourist destinations that you cannot ignore. Visitors will have the opportunity to visit Son Tra peninsula – about 10 km from the city center: Ba Na Mountain with rich ecological area about 1500m from the sea level or ancient craft villages such as Cam Ne mat village, Tuy Loan ancient village, Non Nuoc fine art stone village. Nha Trang Nha Trang is known as a paradise with famous tourist attractions and cool climate. Located in the center of Khanh Hoa province, Nha Trang city is also known as “the pearl of the far east” with the bestowed nature gifts such as many beautiful beaches with clear blue water, long stretches of sand, several golf resorts, wonderful sunshine, as well as spacious and airy roads, no traffic jams, and well-invested infrastructure. There are many attractive tourist destinations in Nha Trang that visitor should not miss such as the Hon Chong, Vinpearl tourism paradise, and Hon Mun Island. So, in the end you are actually spoilt for choice. Therefore, apart from getting assistance from a reputable visa specialist, go over there and rent a condominium or house. That way you can get a good idea of the location and what it is like to live like a resident. Then make your choice. The Land of Smiles is starting to lose its potential for many retirees especially those with shrinking pensions to live on. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-04-22 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
