  13. by Paul Rujopakarn BANGKOK (NNT) - The Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT) has forecast a bright future for Thai precious stone exports in 2022. The positive projection came after data showed January exports reached $767.48 million, a leap of 50.89% from the previous month. Jewelry contributed to 3.61% of Thai exports in January. Excluding unrefined gold, the export value of the sector reached $580.29 million for a 48.16% increase. These figures indicate recovery in the sector following a slump brought about by the global pandemic. Positive factors affecting the gem and jewelry industry during the month include the recovering global economy and expanded COVID vaccine coverage in Thailand. The United States, India, Hong Kong, Germany and the United Kingdom are among the key trading partners. Keep up to date with all things Thailand - Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe Citing its data, the GIT said the most popular exports in January were diamonds, silver, gold, gems and synthetic jewelry. The institute noted, however, that the Omicron COVID variant, inflation, increasing household debt, the income gap and the ongoing war in Ukraine continue to be major negative factors for the sector. It also recommended that dealers consider relying more on e-commerce to stay afloat and capitalize on the rising popularity of online shopping trends. -- © Copyright NNT 2022-03-14 - Aetna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. A small group of people, with the support of some lawyers, demonstrated in front of Nonthaburi police station yesterday (Sunday) to demand, among other things, the replacement of the current team of police investigating the drowning of TV actress Nida Patcharaveerapong, aka “Tangmo”. The demonstrators want the team from the Nonthaburi either to be replaced by officers from the Department of Special Investigation or by a new team, with the media taking part as observers, amid a media circus surrounding the case, the investigation of which has seen little progress. The latest forensics update indicates that the cuts on the actress’s thigh, believed to have been caused by the boat’s propeller, were not the cause of her death, because no major blood vessel was damaged. 23. 77kaoded Thai Caption: Crazy love - cruel shooting A foreigner staying with his Thai wife on a yearly visit to Buriram got a rude awakening about gun crazy, infidelity rampant Thailand at the weekend. Kanya, 37, and the foreigner (whose nationality was not given) were relaxing at home when Phitphirun, 45, arrived on a motorcycle. A couple of years ago she had struck up a relationship with him. Picture: 77kaoded Two months earlier Kanya had told him in Line messages that it was over between them as he wouldn't change his bad behavior. It was 2.30 pm. Phitphirun, a forestry official at the nearby Dong Yai nature reserve, said: "Ok, you're splitting up with me to shack up with someone else, right? Keep up to date with all things Thailand - Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe "Ok you all die". She didn't believe his boast as he drove off. But a short while later he returned in a forestry department pick-up and was holding a shotgun. He vaulted the wall and started firing. Picture: 77kaoded Kanya and her foreign husband managed to flee but inside the house were her sons and her bed ridden mother. She believed her 20 year old son from a previous relationship, Natthapong, came out of a room to confront Phitphirun. He was shot dead in the face. Pakham police at the bungalow, that is also used as a shop, found a Toyota with multiple bullet holes and evidence of many other shots fired inside the house in Hoothamnop sub-district. The shooter fled the scene and said he would surrender but had not done so yet. His boss at the nature reserve Somsuan Raksat went to the police to file charges of theft of a civil service gun and vehicle. He said that the suspect was familiar with that weapon and had stolen the keys to the vehicle. Meanwhile the police have applied for a warrant on charges of murder, attempted murder, weapons offences and trespass. More on this as we hear of it.
