  1. Picture: Siam Rath Siam Rath posted a video of some of the action of the Crime Suppression Division central branch after the murder of a man mixed up in drugs at the end of January. It was all under the banner of "Khaa Thuang Ngern Yaa Narok" this refers to murder in a case where the assailants were going after a debt for Ya Ba or ice (crystal meth). Picture: Siam Rath Suspected of masterminding the murder is a man called Sommai. Murdered in Trang, southern Thailand on January 29th was 48 year old Suchart or "Poo" who was watering his trees at the time. The assailant or assailants arrived in a Vios. Picture: Siam Rath The police action was spread across Trang, Phuket and Bangkok where 14 places were targeted resulting in 8 arrests, the seizure of four guns, 54 rounds of ammunition, 262 Ya Ba and 0.79 grams of ice. Various assets were also seized. Siam Rath's article - essentially PR for the RTP as much as news - included the name of fourteen police officers involved in the raids. 3. Daily News Thai Caption Thailand's press in the form of Thai Rath continued to report every angle in the aftermath of the apparent gang shooting of an Indian man with Canadian nationality in Phuket last Friday. Daily News called him Jimi Singh Sandhu though elsewhere they referred to him as Mandeep Singh. They quoted the RTP chief Pol Gen Suwat Chaengyodsuk as saying that a review is underway as to how Thailand manages to keep out foreign criminals. He said that if this was done in the first place it could have prevented this violence. He said that the force would be looking at interactions with foreign agencies and how the Thais act on information received. ASEAN NOW notes that there is a widespread perception among the Thai public that the RTP do very little to prevent foreign criminals entering Thailand. Places like Phuket and Pattaya in particular are well known for harboring foreign criminal elements and individuals with mafia connections. 5. Daily News Thai Caption: A good kicking! Daily News chose to devote column inches to what they described as the latest drama gripping Thai social media prompting many comments. A woman called Pareploy Saeaia, according to her Facebook name, posted a video of her actions in the street against a man. Picture: Daily News Friends tried to restrain her from attacking a guy in a blue coat who was trying to leave on a motorcycle. He was wearing a rather sheepish smile that only seemed to enflame the woman more. She was aiming several kicks at the man who also received some mild fisticuffs from another man. There was also some fruity Thai language. Picture: Daily News Pareploy said she wasn't going to post about the incident in the street, seemingly in Bangkok. She said that she decided to post as she wanted to warn other women. She said that the man had wanted to "clink glasses" with her but she refused his approach. Then five minutes later he tipped the contents of a drink over her head prompting the scenes outside the "Khao Tom" restaurant. "I'm a Thai boxer," she claimed. "And you picked on the wrong person, mate". Actually she didn't say mate, notes ASEAN NOW. Water monitor might be closer to the mark spelt XXX in the Daily News article. Picture: Siam Rath Later Siam Rath reported that Pareploy had filed a complaint with Huay Khwang police. They said she was known in the ring as "Petchploy Khwathonsung" - thonsung means a bit of log or timber. Later in the early morning hours the man turned up and the police fined them both 1,000 baht. 6. Handicapped "three legged tiger" responsible for series of attacks on people and livestock in Kanchanaburi Picture Thai Rath Wildlife authorities in western Thailand have identified the culprit after a series of attacks on people and livestock. 7. Picture Thai Rath Wildlife authorities in western Thailand have identified the culprit after a series of attacks on people and livestock. A three legged tiger. Twenty camera traps were set up by the Freedom Foundation and one caught the handicapped tiger ripping apart a buffalo. It is thought that the tiger's behaviour changed because it was unable to hunt animals in the wild due to its disability. So it turned to ambushing people and livestock - unusual behaviour for a tiger. Authorities fear more attacks and retaliation measures against the tiger population of the Khao Laem area of Kanchanaburi so it has been decided to attempt to capture the tiger and look after it in captivity. The area has also been in in the news after five people were arrested for killing two tigers and BBQ-ing their meat. They claimed they did it to protect herds but critics and animal experts believe they may have been after the pelts and body parts that can fetch 100,000s of baht. A man was also attacked while tending his herd. ASEAN NOW has been told by a Dutch animal rights activist that there are about 180 wild tigers in Thailand. Thai Rath reported that the issue of some of these animals living close to human populations and herders in Thailand and creating conflict was becoming more prevalent. 9. Picture: Thai Rath It was a story heard all too frequently on the dangerous Thai roads last night in Sattahip. A driver of a Revo pick-up called Jirasak, 22, said he was going straight when a motorcycle attempting to make a U-turn cut in front of his path from the left giving him no chance to brake. Jirasak ended up 100 meters down the road with a damaged front end. Forty four year old Phairach on a Honda Dream was not so lucky. Bits of him - in too graphic details to reproduce from Thai Rath - were all over the road. The accident happened outside the Phlu Ta Luang Housing estate about 8 pm. Local police officer Lt-Col Ekkachai Moonlee is investigating the death of Phairach, a local man. Noppaporn said he was on his way from the old market to a resort in Bang Saen where he intended to stay the night before returning to Bangkok. The accident happened on the Ang Sila to Bang Saen Road at 12.30 this morning. The sign on the wall was indistinct but the Thai word for "museum" could be made out. Police are studying CCTV to find out why Noppaporn might have lost control. Thai Rath made no mention of alcohol in their report neither did they mention the translation of the Spanish word "pajero". 13. By Cod Satrusayang Thailand is headed for a political crisis with the ruling party unwilling to call a house dissolution while coalition partners and opposition parties are not willing to move forward with matters of governance as the current government assumes a lame duck stance. Since expelling 21 members of their own party, a faction led by politically powerful MP Thammanat Prompao, earlier this year, the ruling Palang Pracharat Party has been unable to find any cohesion internally with want away factions united only by loyalty to the current prime minister and their fear of party leader General Prawit Wongsuwan. But with Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha weary of his former compatriot Prawit and with rumors that he has already has his allies getting up a smaller party, both coalition partners and opposition parties have sensed the writing on the wall for this government. 15. Picture: Thai Rath Thai Rath reporters went to a housing estate in the north east of Thailand after a pack of five dogs owned by a neighbor savaged a little girl yesterday. Khanitha Sukchoke, or Nam Wan aged 4, had been allowed by doctors to go home to her house in Song Chan sub-district. She had multiple wounds to her legs and back. It could have been much worse but a boy intervened with a stick to stop the worst of it. The child's aunty, Deuan, said that Nam Wan was playing where she always did when the Thai breed dogs attacked and she ran out of the house hearing the commotion. She said that in the past her husband, Nam Wan's grandmother and Nam Wan herself had been bitten by the neighbor's dogs but it was not serious. They just required rabies shots. This time the little girl and the rest of the estate had been left terrified of going out. They want the dogs locked up or taken away entirely. Noi, 53, the owner said she kept six Thai and mixed breed dogs and didn't lock them up. She said they were usually mild mannered though she admitted they had bitten the neighbors before. She was prepared to pay for everything - she considered the little girl a relative. And if the authorities decide to take the dogs away she would agree for the sake of everyone concerned. The news comes as Thailand’s Office of the Insurance Commission (OIC) has issued new rules, which take effect on February 15th, limiting compensation claims by people infected with COVID-19. Patients who are symptomatic or who have mild symptoms being treated in hospital or in home isolation and are without doctor’s certificate stating the need for treatment in such facilities will not be covered by the medical care or compensation scheme. Assistant OIC Secretary-General Apakorn Panlerd said that the new rule is in line with the Public Health Ministry’s guidelines for the care of people infected with COVID-19, as revised on January 4th, which has resulted in a change to the conditions covering claims. 19. Thai police say that the two foreign men who shot a Canadian gangland figure are likely still in Thailand Police in Phuket have been busy gathering evidence after a 32 year old Canadian of Indian descent was gunned down outside his luxury villa on Friday evening, reported Thai Rath. 20. Picture: Thai Rath Police in Phuket have been busy gathering evidence after a 32 year old Canadian of Indian descent was gunned down outside his luxury villa on Friday evening, reported Thai Rath. He was named by the media as Mandeep Singh; earlier reports (using a different name) suggested he was a gangland figure in Canada with connections across the middle east and Asia. Police have been split into several task forces with a a central investigative "war room" at the villa to coordinate operations. There is plenty of evidence to go on and all indications are that the duo who committed the hit are professionals who prepared well. They have been described as "very cool" in their commission of the crime. CCTV caught them calmly walking by a hotel two kilometers from the scene of the crime in Rawai, Phuket. They were both wearing no shoes after the crime and did not use a getaway vehicle. A cap and a hoodie were found in a rubber plantation used by the pair to make good their escape. At this point CCTV had stopped. The clothing items are being checked for DNA with the results being compared to wanted criminals on Interpol databases. Both men were white with heights of 170-180 cms and 166-170 cms. They were wearing black masks. Two kinds of bullets were found at the scene and one set of fingerprints on the victim's car. Five phones and a quantity of dried ganja were found in the villa. They are believed to have cased the area before the hit and showed a complete understanding of their escape route. Police are now in four separate teams as they examine different aspects of the crime such as witnesses at the scene, their escape route, the scientific evidence and their subsequent movements. One thing police are sure about at this stage - they are either still in the immediate area or at least still in Thailand.
