  5. The Council of University Presidents of Thailand (CUPT) has offered an apology for a large leak of the personal information of people applying to enter state universities under the Thai University Central Admission System (TCAS). CUPT issued a statement yesterday in response to a social media offer for sale of 23,000 items of personal information and files from the myTCAS.com website in May last year. The news of the leak came after a backlash against the organisation for failing to provide assistance to high school students who test positive for COVID-19 during the university entrance exams (GAT/PAT) in March. A Twitter hashtag boycotting the organisation surfaced after some students were told to simply take the exam next year. CUPT said that it had checked all the files in question and found that they contain information on the third phase of TCAS64 and not all of them contain personal information about the applicants for entry to state universities. 17. A monk - now determined to actually be a real one - was filmed going on his "binthabat" (alms) rounds in a nice black Honda car. Complaints reached the Buddhist affairs chief about the somewhat less than holy rounds in the Bangkok suburb of Klong Thawee Wattana. National Buddhism Office spokesman Sittha Moonhong confirmed that the "phra" was genuine - he's a monk in Phijit in the north east at a temple called Wat Pho Talay. He said it would be up to a committee there what punishment to mete out. Meanwhile Daily news quoted the Sangha Council as saying that monks or novices driving cars and motorcycles was a "no-no" as was their applying for driving licences. Exceptions were the operation of vehicles on Buddhist business inside temples or taking the injured to hospital, for example. ASEAN NOW notes that monks are supposed to shun worldly possessions - they are permitted to have saffron robes and perhaps a shoulder bag but that's it. Daily News had a picture of the barefoot monk getting into a car. 23. Daily News caption: Fostering understanding A delegation of top police and land transport authorities went to Soi Ta-iat condos and hotels to try and explain to taxi drivers about how things were going to work from now on. This followed a much publicised spat between what is known as the local taxi mafia and a Thai tourist that caused the authorities to do a mass scurry. Deputy Phuket provincial chief Pol Col Jirasak Siamsak was with Phuket provincial land transport office rep Kornphitak Asanasuwan on the "fostering understanding" mission, reported Daily News. Picture: Daily News Jirasak explained what it was to be a responsible cabbie. And most importantly of all the fact that now things had changed - tourists could now use ride hailing apps legally. He said the prices were not all that different. One company given permission to operate is Hello Phuket Service. Others are in the offing. Picture: Daily News Jirasak also said the authorities were in the process of bringing more order to taxi ranks. The cabbies spoken to said they understood and were prepared to cooperate with the new rules. ASEAN NOW notes that this spirit of concilliation remains to be seen. Taxi drivers have been a law unto themselves on the holiday island for decades with tourists frequently claiming big rip-offs.
