  4. "Ungrateful son" beats his mother to death with a piece of timber - she'd refused to give him cash for Ya Ba Daily News caption: Ungrateful Son Daily News reported on the horrific case of a son who they called ungrateful in reference to a Thai legend. 5. Daily News caption: Ungrateful Son Daily News reported on the horrific case of a son who they called ungrateful in reference to a Thai legend. That was the understatement of 2022. Na Yong police in the southern Thai province of Trang were called after a murder at a bungalow in their district. Lying dead with cerebral matter splattered all around a car parking area was 73 year old Phol. Her dentures were some way from the body. The assailant was soon identified as her 39 year old son who had fled on a Honda Wave. The motorcycle was soon found parked at a rubber plantation and he was nearby. He was still clutching a 1.5 meter long piece of bloodstained timber. He also had a knife in his waistband. Police took him into custody after 3 hours. Picture: Daily News It was reported that Phol had two children - the assailant, a Ya Ba addict for 20 years, was the eldest. Some years ago he attempted to murder his own father by slashing his neck with a knife. He had been released from jail for attempted murder and been in and out of prison at least 3/4 times. His latest brush with the law was in 2019 when he was arrested for Ya Ba (meth with caffeine) use and resisiting arrest. He only got out 3 months ago. He had called his mother asking for his usual 100-200 baht handout for drugs but on this occasion she refused. So he drove his no-plate bike over to her house 200 meters from where he lived and beat her to death by striking her at least 10 times in the head. He is now in custody awaiting prosecution. Daily News called him " an ungrateful son" referring to the Ramayana (Ramakian) legend of two buffalos - Thorapha and Thoraphee - in which the elder cruel buffalo is killed by his son. 9. Picture: Siam Rath The commander of Region 7 Lt-Gen Thanayut Wuthijajuthamrong has ordered the immediate transfer to inactive duties of a police station chief and four senior subordinates after a gambling arrest. The five cops will be shuffling paper at Region 7 HQ while an investigation takes place, reported Siam Rath. Siam Rath reported that on Monday a Region 7 investigation team headed by Lt-Col Seni Wetchaphat arrested Khamron Klamphabut and 19 associates who were playing Hi-Lo (a gambling game) in the woods in Don Pru sub-district. They were also gathering in contravention of Suphanburi Covid-19 restrictions. This was in the Si Prachan police jurisdiction. The transfer order relates to the chief Pol Col Raphop Jampangern and four other officers. ASEAN NOW notes that this is a standard reaction to when gambling is found to be going on. Often it is happening as police turn a blind eye or even actively benefit by way of back handers from the illegal activity. ASEAN NOW are not suggestion for one minute that this is what was happening on this occasion..... 17. Wealthy foreigners to own small landholdings associated with homes here agreed in principle by Carla Boonkong & Pranee O' Connor Deputy Prime Minister Supattanapong Punmeechaow is the minister behind the scheme to attract 1 million foreigners to live and work in Thailand over the next 5 years. The Centre for Economic Situation Administration (CESA) chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan ocha recently approved a proposal in principle that when perfected and approved by the cabinet, will allow foreigners to own small landholdings in Thailand associated with residential units. 18. Deputy Prime Minister Supattanapong Punmeechaow is the minister behind the scheme to attract 1 million foreigners to live and work in Thailand over the next 5 years. The Centre for Economic Situation Administration (CESA) chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan ocha recently approved a proposal in principle that when perfected and approved by the cabinet, will allow foreigners to own small landholdings in Thailand associated with residential units. This is in addition to another provision drawn up by the Ministry of the Interior that will allow for more flexible work arrangements and work permits for the new cadre of incoming foreigners who will be expected to invest substantially in the kingdom’s challenged economy. by Carla Boonkong & Pranee O' Connor This important step is part of a wider programme to attract more foreigners to Thailand to live. However, the government is also determined that these new residents must have the ability to generate wealth and prosperity for the kingdom’s wider economy. The proposed legal provision has yet to be ratified by the cabinet and there are already signs that ministers are aware of the politically sensitive nature of the plan. A high powered Thai government committee chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan ocha has approved in principle a proposal to allow select foreigners who qualify for newly approved 10-year visas to own small landholdings in connection with their homes. The proposal was agreed on January 21st last by the Centre for Economic Situation Administration (CESA) while other plans to extend lease terms for foreigners and allow more foreign ownership of condominium developments were rejected. The news is linked with an ongoing programme, first announced last April, to attract 1 million foreigners to come and live in Thailand over the next five years, a move which it is hoped could generate 5 to 6% of the country’s GDP in the future. A select committee within the Thai government has approved a measure in principle to allow certain qualified foreigners to own land in Thailand going forward but limited to one rai or approximately 0.4 acres or 0.16 hectares, strictly for residential purposes.
