  3. video screenshot The China-Thailand "Falcon Strike 2024" joint air force training exercise commenced on Monday morning. Hosted at Udon Royal Thai Air Force Base in northern Thailand, the initiative aims to bolster military cooperation between the two nations. The exercise features the participation of fighter jets, fighter-bombers, helicopters, and various equipment, including special operations units from the Chinese PLA. This joint venture aims to enhance the capabilities of both forces in responding to mutual security challenges. The training exercise is structured into five distinct phases: cross-border support, forces deployment, joint air defense, joint strike, and a concluding review and discussion. This phased approach ensures thorough and comprehensive training, allowing both forces to synchronise their tactics and strategies. Captain Somsak Rattaninorn, a spokesperson for the Royal Thai Air Force, outlined the exercise's objectives: "Falcon Strike 2024 is designed to enhance our collective defence capabilities. It's about fostering mutual understanding and readiness for any potential threats." The collaboration extends beyond mere military drills—it symbolises an evolving partnership. In recent years, Thailand and China have significantly strengthened their diplomatic and economic bonds. This joint exercise marks another significant step in their bilateral relation, particularly in military cooperation. 16332444_fae6bdabdc47735f081e1f8c37bbe86d.mp4 From China's perspective, the exercise provides an opportunity to showcase its advanced aircraft and military technologies. It also demonstrates China's commitment to regional stability and partnership with its Southeast Asian neighbours. For Thailand, the exercise is a chance to learn from a global military powerhouse and improve its defence strategies. Such collaboration is crucial, given the increasing complexity of regional security scenarios. By the end of "Falcon Strike 2024," both nations aim to have a refined understanding of each other's military capabilities, ensuring they are better prepared for future joint missions or any unexpected crises. The exercise is set to conclude with an extensive review, allowing both sides to evaluate their performance and identify areas for further improvement. -- 2024-08-21 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. 5. FILE - Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, center, arrives at Don Muang airport in Bangkok, Thailand, on Aug. 22, 2023. (AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit, File) Pheu Thai's de facto leader, Thaksin Shinawatra, disclosed today that his party is open to the idea of more parties joining the governing coalition, including the Democrats. Thaksin noted the possibility of the Palang Pracharath party, currently experiencing internal discord, joining the new government. However, he emphasised that the party must mend its internal divisions first. Drawing from the lyrics of a well-known song, he stressed, “If you want to come, you must come as a whole.” The Palang Pracharath party is currently divided into two factions: one led by the party secretary-general Thammanat Prompao, and the other by party leader General Prawit Wongsuwan. Thaksin indicated a preference for the faction that demonstrated unwavering support for the previous administration, likely referring to Thammanat’s group. Thaksin also clarified that the responsibility for appointing cabinet members rested with Pheu Thai and that he had no intention of intervening in this process. He decisively denied any media reports suggesting he had been in contact with General Prawit, reported Thai PBS. On the potential inclusion of the Democrat party in the coalition, Thaksin remarked that every government seeks stability to boost confidence in the nation. “It is possible,” he stated, leaving the door open for broader coalition dynamics. Thaksin also underscored the importance of a stringent vetting process for potential ministers, mentioning that those at risk of disqualification should voluntarily step aside. Thaksin's comments reflect a strategic readiness to foster a diverse and stable governing coalition. As internal and external alignments take shape, his approach prioritises unity and stability, paving the way for a potentially broader coalition government. -- 2024-08-21 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. 7. Thailand's Palang Pracharath Party is facing internal turmoil once again after its secretary-general, Thammanat Prompao, was excluded from the new Cabinet lineup. This development threatens to further divide the party, heightening tensions between different factions. Today, Prawit Wongsuwan, the party leader, submitted a list of four ministerial nominees to the Pheu Thai Party, which leads the current coalition government. However, notably absent from this list was the polarising figure of Thammanat. The move is seen as a strategic exclusion that has generated discontent within the ranks. The exclusion from Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra's Cabinet has left Thammanat and his followers aggrieved. Thammanat, who also holds the post of acting Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, has significant backing within the party. About 18 of the 38 Palang Pracharath MPs are loyal to him, while the others remain aligned with Prawit, according to a party source. To fill the gap, it is believed that Deputy Palang Pracharath leader Chaiwut Thanakhamanusorn will take Thammanat's place in the Cabinet. However, his specific role remains unconfirmed. This change was partly driven by concerns over potential legal repercussions. Thammanat Prompao. Picture courtesy: Thai Rath Thammanat's past conviction on drug-related charges in Australia could open the door to lawsuits. His appointment could jeopardise Paetongtarn’s premiership, much like when Srettha Thavisin was ousted by the Constitutional Court due to a controversial ministerial appointment. The divide within Palang Pracharath may lead Thammanat to push for a significant move. He might urge Prawit to let the executive board expel him and his loyal MPs from the party, allowing them to align with another group within a 30-day period, as permitted by law, reported Thai Newsroom. This situation isn't new for Thammanat; he previously spearheaded a departure of 16 MPs to the Thai Economics Party, only to return to Palang Pracharath last year. As the dust settles, the internal conflict could lead to significant shifts within the Thai political landscape, further fracturing an already divided party. 9. FILE - Thailand's former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, left, with, his daughter Paetongtarn, arrives at Don Muang airport in Bangkok, Thailand, Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2023.(AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit, File) Thaksin Shinawatra has ruled out the possibility of his daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, taking on the role of defence minister while serving as the newly-appointed Prime Minister of Thailand. This confirmation came today, putting to rest widespread speculation about her future role in the cabinet. Paetongtarn, who is 38 years old, is currently the Pheu Thai Party leader. Thaksin emphasised that she would likely focus solely on her prime ministerial duties, drawing parallels with her aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra, who previously held both positions before being ousted in a coup in 2014. "It is overly burdensome to run the country and manage defence matters simultaneously," Thaksin explained. He suggested that the defence ministry role might go to another party within the coalition but refrained from naming any specific candidates. Talks have circled around Sutin Khlungsang, the current caretaker defence minister, but Thaksin was tight-lipped on any potential reshuffle involving him. Similarly, he avoided commenting on whether Nattapol Nakpanich, widely regarded as a protege of former Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, might step into the position. Thaksin also chose not to speculate on when Yingluck might return to Thailand. Earlier statements hinted that she could be back in time for the Songkran festival next April. However, any plans involving her return could complicate matters for Paetongtarn’s government, reported Thai Newsroom. Given these nuances, Thaksin reassured that Paetongtarn’s focus would remain on national governance, dismissing any notion of her taking on dual responsibilities. “Managing the country will be demanding enough,” he said. Ultimately, today's announcement aims to clarify the roles and expectations within the new Thai government, shaping the upcoming political landscape as Paetongtarn transitions into her new role without the added burden of defence ministerial duties. -- 2024-08-21 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. 11. An Indian man, Mr. Tarun Jain, 39, was found dead at a shop in Pathum Thani, Thailand, after disappearing following an argument with his Thai partner. This incident has sparked a puzzling investigation. Tarun Jain, an electrical wiring business owner from India, had been renting a flat in Pathum Thani for over a year, and he frequently stayed there during his visits to Thailand. He arrived in Thailand on August 12th, and two days later, he phoned his wife to inform her of a heated dispute with his business partner. After that, he vanished, and his wife lost contact with him. His distressed wife flew to Thailand and, unable to locate her husband, reported his disappearance to the local police. The mystery deepened when the apartment building manager discovered Jain's body on August 20th. He had fallen through the roof of the shop in front of the apartment building. Pol. Lt. Gen. Anusorn Wiangsima, deputy inspector at Khlong Luang police station, promptly arrived at the scene with crime scene officers, a doctor from Thammasat University Hospital, and Ruam Katanyu Foundation rescuers. They discovered no sign of struggle in Jain's third-floor flat but did find disturbing evidence on the building's rooftop, which the police collected, reported Thai Newsroom. Adding to the mystery is the fact that approximately 300,000 baht, in both US dollars and Thai currency, is missing. Jain's mobile phone was found on him, and police are now scrutinising surveillance camera footage from his apartment to identify anyone who may have entered his flat from the day of his arrival until his death. The body has been sent for an autopsy at Thammasat University Hospital, and police are continuing their investigations. The sudden death of Tarun Jain raises numerous questions and is shrouded in mystery, leaving authorities to unravel what truly transpired. 13. Former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has congratulated her niece, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, on her historic appointment as Thailand's 31st premier. This marks a significant moment for the Shinawatra family and Thailand’s political landscape, given Paetongtarn’s distinction as the country's youngest leader and its second female prime minister. On Tuesday morning, Yingluck took to Facebook to share her pride, posting three heartwarming photographs: two of them together and one of Paetongtarn holding a large bouquet of roses. Yingluck, who was Thailand's 28th prime minister, expressed her admiration for her niece’s bravery in taking on the monumental responsibility of steering the nation forward. Paetongtarn inherits a challenging role, particularly as Thailand grapples with pressing economic issues. In her congratulatory message, Yingluck acknowledged the significant pressures and high expectations Paetongtarn will face. However, she also expressed confidence in her niece’s resilience and willingness to heed advice, suggesting that these traits will serve her well in overcoming the obstacles ahead. Picture courtesy: Daily News Yingluck is the youngest sister of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, making Paetongtarn not only her niece but also Thaksin's daughter. This familial connection intensifies the spotlight on Paetongtarn, given the Shinawatras' prominent roles in Thailand's political history, reported TNA-MCOT. Currently living in exile, Yingluck fled Thailand in 2017, just days before being sentenced in absentia for negligence related to a rice subsidy program. The Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions handed her a five-year prison sentence. Despite her own tumultuous political journey, Yingluck's support for Paetongtarn highlights the enduring influence of the Shinawatra family in Thai politics. As Paetongtarn steps into her new role, the nation watches closely, hopeful yet cautious about the leadership and direction she will bring to Thailand. 16. Several neighboring countries compete with Thailand for foreign retirees By Barry Kenyon Property growth is the biggest draw in south east Asia as this Phuket hoarding illustrates. Thailand offers a multiplicity of long-term visas for women and men well past the first bloom of youth. 17. Property growth is the biggest draw in south east Asia as this Phuket hoarding illustrates. By Barry Kenyon Thailand offers a multiplicity of long-term visas for women and men well past the first bloom of youth. They include annual extensions of stay, the 5-20 years Elite visa and the 10 years Long Term Residence (LTR), each of which has its own scale of charges with assorted pluses and minuses. None of them allows direct ownership of land by foreigners, nor guarantees a path to permanent residency or citizenship. Purchase of condominiums is allowed but does not generally result in visa concessions. Since January 2024, anyone spending six months or more in the kingdom may be liable to personal income tax on remitted income. Malaysia has had a 5-20 years My Second Home program since 2002 but there have been a succession of changes, including the requirement to purchase and retain a property and associated land (100 percent in their name) in order to spur growth in the local market. Perks include obtaining visas for spouses, parents and children under 34 years. Unlike Thailand, Malaysia imposes the requirement to live in the country for at least three months per year, although a dependant relative can substitute where the visa holder is still of working age. Malaysia is not currently insisting on foreign tax residents paying tax on remitted income from abroad. Cambodia seems to have abandoned an earlier second home campaign, but the Retirement ER visa gives one year which is annually renewable. Retirees aged at least 55 years do not need to provide written proof of status or finances. Property ownership laws are strict and similar to Thailand’s. In theory, Cambodia requires foreign residents to file and pay taxes on their foreign income, but there are few signs of enforcement for this kind of visa. Cambodia allows foreigners to purchase citizenship provided they invest or donate US$300,000, an offer taken up with alacrity by rich Chinese in particular. 24. Thai nurses working at a state hospital in the northern province of Chiang Rai are wearing black in protest against an abusive doctor who brutally assaulted a nurse at the weekend. Nurses at the unidentified hospital changed their white uniforms to black yesterday, August 19, to call on the executive team to take action against the abusive doctor, whose identity remains undisclosed.
