  1. In a shocking incident last night, a drunken brawl at a popular Hua Hin pub led to the fatal shooting of Sergeant Major Rojchanaphon Rojchanaphanit, an intelligence officer at Thanarat Camp. The commotion at Tiny Club saw police commissioner Jakkrit Worawongphanitkul allegedly pulling a 9 mm. pistol, fatally shooting Sergeant Punch and injuring two other patrons. At approximately 4:00 a.m. on 18th August, Hua Hin Police Station received a report about a dispute turning violent in the bustling Tiny Club on Soi Hua Hin 80. Responders, including high-ranking officers and forensic teams, quickly arrived at the chaotic scene littered with broken bottles and a large pool of blood. Sergeant Punch, dressed casually, was found lying face-up, having suffered two lethal gunshot wounds to the chest. His sudden death plunged his family and fellow servicemen into mourning. Two more men were also injured in the crossfire and taken to a local hospital for treatment, reported Thai RAth. Witnesses recounted that the trouble brewed as the pub brimmed with over 50 revellers enjoying loud music and drinks. An argument between Mr. Sen, identified later as Jakkrit Worawongphanitkul, and Sergeant Punch escalated rapidly. In a fit of rage, Jakkrit allegedly drew his gun and fired at the Sergeant before stray bullets hit two bystanders, causing patrons to flee in panic. Jakkrit, an advisor to the Hua Hin Police Station, surrendered himself that same morning, presenting the firearm used in the altercation. He faces charges of intentional murder and illegal firearm possession. Despite denying the charges, he was denied bail pending further investigation and court proceedings. Authorities noted that Tiny Club, operated by an influential local figure, lacked a business license and stayed open well past legal hours, with lax security allowing firearms inside. Police are pursuing legal action against the pub owner and scrutinising CCTV footage, which seems to have been tampered with post-incident. The tragic death of Sergeant Punch, who was remembered fondly by acquaintances and on social media, underscores the seriousness of preventing such lethal confrontations. The incident has left the Hua Hin community in shock and sparked an urgent review of security measures in local nightlife venues. 3. At 4:35 p.m. on August 18, the 191 Emergency Call Center received a report of a stabbing incident at a well-known mall on Koh Samui, with one person severely injured. Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find Rinrada, a 23-year-old trans woman from Bo Phut, Koh Samui, lying in a pool of blood. Despite immediate efforts by rescue workers to transport her to Thai International Hospital, she was pronounced dead upon arrival. Investigations revealed that Rinrada had been stabbed seven times in vital areas, leading to significant blood loss and her eventual death, repried Daily News. The suspect, Chokchai Intharak, 23, from Thung Tao Mai, Ban Na San, Surat Thani, was detained by mall security. Chokchai had injured himself with the knife used in the attack on Rinrada. Police took him into custody and provided treatment for his injuries. Pol Col Den Duang Thongsrisuk, the Chief of Bo Phut Police Station, questioned Chokchai about the incident. Chokchai admitted that he had been in a relationship with Rinrada for over two months. Their relationship was marked by constant arguments over jealousy, as Rinrada frequently teased Chokchai with pictures of other men. On the day of the attack, Chokchai had transferred money to Rinrada to buy motorcycle accessories, including a shock absorber and brake line. However, when Rinrada failed to deliver the brake line and showed Chokchai a picture of another man, claiming he was her new boyfriend, Chokchai's anger boiled over. He went to the mall where Rinrada worked and used the brake line he had bought to strike her. When Rinrada fought back and took the brake line away, Chokchai drew a knife he had brought with him and attacked her in a fit of rage. The police are now pursuing legal action against Chokchai Intharak. Thailand newly elected Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra arrives before the royal endorsement ceremony appointing Paetongtarn as Thailand's new prime minister at Pheu Thai party headquarters in Bangkok, Thailand, Sunday, Aug. 18, 2024. (AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit) Newly-appointed Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra stands at a crucial juncture, facing intense scrutiny over Pheu Thai Party’s flagship policy: the Digital Wallet scheme. This programme, designed to boost the Thai economy by providing financial aid directly to the poor, is under the microscope, testing Paetongtarn’s integrity as a leader. The Digital Wallet initiative proposes giving digital money to Thai citizens to stimulate spending and economic growth. Proponents argue it will uplift the underprivileged and generate economic activity, while critics warn it could lead to long-term financial instability. Paetongtarn recently hinted that the scheme might need revisions, but her comments remain vague, leaving the media and public with more questions than answers. One of the primary issues is whether the Digital Wallet policy would genuinely benefit the poor or create more economic woes. Unlike her predecessor Srettha Thavisin, who defended the programme but provided no substantial evidence, Paetongtarn is expected to present a clear, rational defence. Failure to do so could tarnish her reputation and weaken public trust. Adding to her challenges is the ongoing controversy surrounding her father, Thaksin Shinawatra. Thaksin, a convicted former prime minister, faces legal charges even as Paetongtarn navigates her new role. This familial connection complicates her political standing, potentially positioning her for legal and constitutional pitfalls. Recently, the Constitutional Court removed Srettha Thavisin due to a Cabinet appointment issue, but his handling of the Thaksin matter also damaged his credibility. Paetongtarn's journey could be similarly fraught with complexities. How the legal system responds to these challenges will be telling regarding Thailand's political direction. In light of past tumultuous months, marked by political upheavals and policy reversals, the future appears uncertain. The next few weeks will be pivotal for Paetongtarn, as she balances defending controversial policies and maintaining political legitimacy amidst Thailand's turbulent political landscape. -- 2024-08-19 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. (AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit) Thailand's former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has stated that he does not need to assume a formal advisory role for the new Prime Minister, his daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra. According to Thaksin, his daughter can seek his counsel whenever necessary, given their familial relationship. Reflecting on their political journey, Thaksin mentioned that about 23 years ago, he led from the front with Paetongtarn standing behind him. Now, the roles have reversed, and he stands ready to support her from behind. Thaksin acknowledged the immense responsibility that comes with being Prime Minister but noted Paetongtarn's advantage of youth at 37, compared to his 74 years. He praised her gentle and humble nature, expressing confidence that she will garner the support and cooperation needed from all sectors of Thai society to drive the nation forward. He firmly denied any involvement in the formation of the new government, stating that this responsibility lies with Paetongtarn. Thaksin also reassured the public that his daughter's political career would not falter as his did. The forthcoming cabinet, mostly retaining members from the current Srettha government, will see some changes. Pheu Thai will hold 17 seats, Bhumjaithai eight, United Thai Nation and Palang Pracharath four each, and Chart Thai Pattana and Prachachart one each. Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira is reportedly at risk of losing his position, potentially replaced by his deputy, Julapun Amornvivat of the Pheu Thai party, unless another candidate is found. Additionally, Pheu Thai Secretary-General Sorawong Thienthong and party-list MP Khattiya Sawatdiphol might be appointed to cabinet positions. Industry Minister Pimpatra Wichaikul may be replaced by Akanat Promphan, Secretary-General of the United Thai Nation Party. Natural Resources and Environment Minister Patcharawat Wongsuwan of Palang Pracharath might also be replaced by Santi Promphat. -- 2024-08-19 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. (AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit). Paetongtarn Shinawatra, daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, was officially endorsed as Thailand's 31st Prime Minister on August 18 by His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn. This momentous occasion took place at a privately-owned hall on Vibhavadi Road, marking Paetongtarn's formal entry into the nation's highest office. The 38-year-old Prime Minister also serves as the leader of the Pheu Thai Party, which is the main force within the current coalition government. Her rise to power follows the recent majority vote by coalition MPs, securing her position as head of the government. Paetongtarn succeeds Srettha Thavisin, who was recently impeached and removed from office by the Constitutional Court due to violations of the constitution and political ethics. Her new administration will feature many ministers from the previous cabinet, ensuring continuity in governance. Under the leadership of Paetongtarn, the Pheu Thai Party, with its 141 MPs, will hold 16 ministerial positions, including that of the Prime Minister. The coalition structure includes the Bhumjaithai Party with 70 MPs, holding eight cabinet seats; the Palang Pracharath Party with 40 MPs, and the Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party with 36 MPs, each holding four cabinet seats. Additionally, the Chart Thai Pattana Party with 10 MPs and the Prachachart Party with nine MPs will each secure one cabinet seat. Thaksin Shinawatra, despite not holding an official position, is expected to play a significant role behind the scenes in shaping the new cabinet and distributing ministerial positions among the coalition partners, similar to his influence in the previous administration. Paetongtarn's entry into politics is relatively recent; she had no prior political experience before being named one of the Pheu Thai Party's candidates for last year's general election. Unlike many of her predecessors, she has never served as an MP, held any government position, or even been an official member of her father's party until last year. As Paetongtarn takes the helm, Thailand looks to the future with cautious optimism, observing how this fresh leadership will navigate the nation's political landscape. -- 2024-08-19 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. 18. The resignation of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin is set to have wide-ranging impacts, while the incoming Paetongtarn Shinawatra administration may find the more liberal immigration and visa policies quite challenging to implement. EDITORIAL By Pattaya Mai The shock resignation of prime minister Srettha Thavisin is bound to reverberate in all sorts of directions. But it’s virtually certain that the new Pheu Thai-led administration will get round to immigration and visas sooner rather than later. Mr Thavisin’s vision was to expand massively the entry and extension opportunities for visa-exempt tourists, whilst creating a new visa for long-stayers with a lawful activity in mind. But the foreign affairs ministry, which pushed through the changes in Cabinet, may have bitten off more than the new government can chew. The latest rule allows visa-exempt tourists to receive 60 days on arrival with a 30 days’ extension at local immigration. Nothing in print prevents these tourists from leaving the country – for example on a border hop – and repeating the procedure indefinitely. That would mean a permanent leave to remain in Thailand, without any visa, simply by briefly leaving the country – even for an hour or two – four times a year. No need to show any paperwork of any kind. When challenged about multiple admissions, the foreign affairs ministry spokesman said that, of course, all entries to Thailand were subject to the discretion of the immigration officer. In other words, you would never be sure what might happen further down the line. One tourist might be refused, whilst another might be hassle-free, a scenario which would create the bad publicity which the Thai government abhors. The obvious solution is for the incoming Thai government to limit entries under the visa-exempt scheme to one or two in any twelve months’ period. 21. Picture courtesy: Thai Rath The trial of Swiss expat Urs Fehr, often referred to as ‘Swiss David,’ is scheduled to conclude on September 3rd. Fehr, the founder of the Green Elephant Sanctuary Park in Cherng Talay, faces an assault charge stemming from a February incident in which he allegedly kicked Dr. Thandao Chandam, a Dibuk Hospital doctor, outside his rented luxury villa in Pa Khlok. In February, Dr. Thandao and a friend were sitting on steps leading to Yamu Beach, watching the full moon, when Fehr reportedly approached them, demanded they leave, and allegedly kicked Dr. Thandao in the back. Fehr, however, claims he slipped while approaching the pair. A widely circulated video of the incident sparked anti-foreigner sentiment among locals, leading to a protest at the beach near Fehr’s residence, reported The Phuket News. Subsequent investigations revealed that the steps leading to the beach were illegally constructed on public land and were later demolished. Officials clarified that Fehr and his wife mistakenly believed their property rights included the steps. Despite an initial March announcement from the Immigration Bureau revoking Fehr’s residence permit, he has remained in Phuket, awaiting legal proceedings. Anuphong Panarat, Secretary to the Governor of Phuket, confirmed Fehr’s continued presence, noting that he is allowed to stay due to the ongoing legal case. "Mr. Fehr remains in the country to face the assault charge. He has not engaged in any business activities during this time," Anuphong stated. Dr. Thandao expressed relief that the case is nearing resolution. "The trial concludes on September 3rd, and appropriate sentencing will follow," said Dr. Thandao. Fehr has been granted recurring 30-day stays under bail conditions, which include residing in approved housing, bi-weekly check-ins with authorities, and refraining from work or illegal activities. "The case is ongoing, but justice is expected to be served soon," Dr. Thandao concluded, thanking the Phuket community and local media for their support. 23. The ruling Pheu Thai Party has announced that the new Cabinet will be introduced within three weeks. Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai confirmed this yesterday, following parliament’s vote for the new premier. Newly installed Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra will have the legal right and duty to make political decisions and hold discussions. Phumtham emphasised that the allocation of ministerial positions will not adhere to the previous quota system, as the former administration has concluded. “There won’t be any old quotas. When the previous government ends, it’s up to the new premier to discuss and negotiate with all the party leaders. “I believe the current situation will encourage everyone to think collectively, and the new prime minister will have to talk with coalition partners to determine what is still appropriate in the current context.” Phumtham clarified that the ministerial reshuffle is not a complete overhaul. Paetongtarn, as the new premier, will require time to discuss the matter with all coalition partners. Sorawong Thienthong, secretary-general of Pheu Thai, stated that the timeline to form a new Cabinet should be within three weeks of Paetongtarn receiving royal endorsement. Following this, she can form a new Cabinet and submit the list of names for royal endorsement. The new leader will then present the government’s policies to the House, as mandated by the constitution, within 15 days of the oath-taking date. Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, head of the Bhumjaithai Party, mentioned that his party has already informed the coalition leader that there will be no proposed changes to their current ministerial positions—four ministerial positions and four deputy ministerial positions. “Everything should remain the same, and the party has proposed its deputy leader Paradorn Prissanananthaku for consideration as first Deputy House Speaker.” Anutin also pointed out that Paetongtarn has served as Pheu Thai leader throughout the last government and has had opportunities to work with all coalition partners. Meanwhile, Sanan Angubolkul, chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, expressed that the TCC will collaborate with the new government to explore ways to implement economic stimulus measures and provide relief to the public, reported Bangkok Post. by Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of CNN Source: The Thaiger 2024-08-17 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million.
