The drivers claimed they were hired to deliver the goods. Highway police intercepted three ten-wheel trucks loaded with illegal Chinese imports yesterday, August 15. The operation took place on Highway 299, kilometres 19-20, in Phai subdistrict, Mueang district, Kalasin province. The convoy, consisting of Hino trucks, was travelling from Somdet district towards Kalasin province when officers flagged them down for inspection due to suspicions about the contents. Upon inspection, police discovered that the trucks were tightly packed with various items imported from China. Customs officials were called in to assist with the examination. The initial investigation revealed that the cargo included electrical appliances without the required Thai Industrial Standards (TIS) certification, counterfeit goods, hazardous materials, foreign liquor and cigarettes, and automobile accessories and electronics. In total, 846 items worth 20 million baht were confiscated. The drivers, identified as Montree, Pongsakorn, and Chanapol (last names withheld), were interrogated following the discovery. They revealed that they had picked up the goods from the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge and were instructed to deliver them to a warehouse in a central province. The drivers stated they were paid per trip and had no relevant documentation for the cargo provided by their employer. by Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger 2024-08-17 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. The 37-year-old daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was voted in with 319 votes in favor, 145 against, and 27 abstentions, making her the 31st and second female prime minister of Thailand. By Pattaya Mail International media reports have highlighted the challenges facing Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Thailand’s youngest-ever prime minister, after being elected by parliament on August 16. The 37-year-old daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was voted in with 319 votes in favor, 145 against, and 27 abstentions, making her the 31st and second female prime minister of Thailand. She is also the third member of the Shinawatra family to hold this position. According to Reuters, despite Paetongtarn’s relatively easy victory in the vote, her lack of political experience means she faces a ‘baptism of fire’ as she takes over from former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who was ousted by the Constitutional Court just two days earlier. Paetongtarn’s entry into politics carries the weight of the Shinawatra legacy, especially after Thaksin-affiliated political parties lost the general election for the first time in 20 years last year, forcing them to make deals with military-backed rivals. Paetongtarn has never held any governmental position before and is expected to face numerous challenges, including reviving Thailand’s struggling economy and addressing the declining popularity of her Pheu Thai Party. Additionally, she will need to push forward the party’s flagship policy of distributing 10,000-baht digital wallets, a program requiring a massive budget of 500 billion baht. With Paetongtarn Shinawatra, elected as Thailand's prime minister during Friday’s special House session on 16 August, much attention has turned to her spouse, Pitaka Suksawat. Pitaka earned his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang. His career initially soared with him working as a pilot for a prominent airline. However, he decided to leave his aviation career behind following his marriage to Paetongtarn in 2019. Currently, Pitaka serves as Deputy Chief Investment Officer at Rende Development Co., Ltd., where he oversees investment operations in both domestic and international markets. His role places him at the intersection of high-stakes investment strategies, shaping the financial landscape within and beyond Thailand. The story of Paetongtarn and Pitaka's relationship begins with a mutual introduction by friends while they were both enrolled in a special academic programme. Their relationship blossomed over two years before they began dating. Within a year, Pitaka proposed, and the couple tied the knot on March 17, 2019. They now have two children, a daughter and a son, whose presence underscores their commitment to balancing high-profile careers with family life. The pair’s emerging influence within Thailand’s socio-political and economic spheres is particularly notable. Paetongtarn’s rise to premiership casts a spotlight on their united vision for the future, blending political strategies with robust investment acumen, embodied by Pitaka. As Thailand embraces its new leadership, all eyes are certainly on how this dynamic couple will navigate their roles, balancing political fervour with financial expertise. The blend of their professional and personal lives presents a unique narrative - an ongoing story watched keenly both at home and abroad. The Shinawatra family continues to face challenges Picture courtesy: Daily News The future of the Pheu Thai Party and the Shinawatra family is at stake as they strive to avoid repeating past mistakes and potential exile from Thailand. The future of the Pheu Thai Party and the Shinawatra family is at stake as they strive to avoid repeating past mistakes and potential exile from Thailand. After several political upheavals, Paetongtarn Shinawatra has been elected as Thailand’s 31st prime minister. The political landscape remains unsettled following the Constitutional Court’s ruling to dissolve the Move Forward Party, leading to a rebranding as the People’s Party. Recently, the Constitutional Court ordered Srettha Thavisin to step down as prime minister due to ethical violations, prompting further legal challenges. Srettha faces additional scrutiny from the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), reported Daily News. These developments have led to significant shifts in the government, with Thaksin Shinawatra, the influential figure behind Pheu Thai, calling for a meeting with coalition partners. Thaksin announced the cancellation of the 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme, Pheu Thai’s flagship policy, due to economic concerns. With Paetongtarn now in power, attention shifts to forming a new Cabinet and potential reshuffles within key parties like Palang Pracharath and Ruam Thai Sang Chart. The upcoming policy announcement on August 28th will set the stage for Paetongtarn’s administration. Paetongtarn now faces the challenge of leading the country, guided by her father, Thaksin. The 2026 general election will be crucial, with the newly formed People’s Party emerging as a major competitor. Paetongtarn, now aligned with conservatives, must find a way to counter the “Orange Camp” representing younger voters. Hong Kong Nationals Arrested in Thailand for Smuggling 14kg of Heroin Picturre courtesy: TNA-MCOT Thai authorities have arrested four Hong Kong nationals at Suvarnabhumi Airport on charges of attempting to smuggle 14 kilograms of heroin hidden inside snack boxes, police announced on Friday. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1335736-hong-kong-nationals-arrested-in-thailand-for-smuggling-14kg-of-heroin/ -
Thai authorities have arrested four Hong Kong nationals at Suvarnabhumi Airport on charges of attempting to smuggle 14 kilograms of heroin hidden inside snack boxes, police announced on Friday. The seizure was the culmination of a joint operation involving the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB), the Customs Department, and the Suvarnabhumi Airport Authority, explained Pol Lt Gen Phanurat Lakboon, secretary-general of the ONCB. "Following a tip-off from Hong Kong law enforcement, we tracked this four-person syndicate and identified them as key players in a transnational drug trafficking operation," stated Pol Lt Gen Phanurat. The suspects had been under surveillance for several days, following their arrival in Thailand and subsequent check-in to hotels located in the Huai Khwang and Ramkhamhaeng districts of Bangkok. On August 14, authorities observed one of the suspects picking up a suspicious suitcase from a car near a hotel in Huai Khwang. The following day, all four suspects headed to Suvarnabhumi Airport, reported TNA-MCOT. "When they arrived at the airport, the suspects went to the restroom together, which led us to believe they were exchanging the drugs," said Pol Lt Gen Phanurat. "We intercepted them and conducted a search, discovering 40 blocks of heroin, weighing approximately 14 kilograms, concealed within snack boxes inside a suitcase." Pol Lt Gen Phanurat noted that this was the second such incident in recent months, with a prior operation in June leading to the seizure of another 14 kilograms of heroin at Suvarnabhumi Airport involving a Hong Kong syndicate. The successful interception of these drugs highlights the ongoing collaboration between Thai authorities and international law enforcement agencies to combat the global drug trade. The swift action by Thai authorities in this case underscores the importance of international cooperation in tackling transnational crime. Thai PBS, TJA Slam General Prawit for Reporter Intimidation Picture courtesy: Thai PBS The Thai PBS and the Thai Journalists' Association (TJA) are urging Palang Pracharath party leader General Prawit Wongsuwan to take responsibility for allegedly intimidating a Thai PBS reporter. General Prawit, known for his ambitions to become Thailand's prime minister, showed visible agitation when approached by the Thai PBS reporter. She had questioned him about whether he had watched the MPs' live broadcast voting to appoint Pheu Thai party leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra as Thailand's 31st prime minister, reported Thai PBS. In a video clip, General Prawit is seen grabbing the reporter’s head with his hand while repeatedly asking, “What’s the question?” Thai PBS released a statement asserting that their reporter was merely fulfilling her professional duties at the time of the incident and denouncing the physical assault as unacceptable. They stressed that such an incident has psychological repercussions not only for the affected reporter but also for the broader journalist community. The Thai PBS station demanded that General Prawit acknowledge his responsibility for the incident and issued a call for accountability. The TJA also issued a statement condemning General Prawit’s actions. They characterized his behaviour as an act of intimidation against press freedom, noting that reporters need to be able to perform their duties without fear of reprisal. They called for General Prawit to take full responsibility for his conduct. Furthermore, the TJA urged the public to show mutual respect towards individuals in different professions. They emphasised the importance of managing expressions of anger to avoid negative impacts on others. The incident has ignited discussions about the treatment of journalists in Thailand and the need for safeguards to protect them from undue intimidation and physical harm while simply doing their jobs. As it stands, the call for accountability resounds strongly among Thailand's media and public alike. -- 2024-08-17 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million.
