Paetongtarn makes history to become youngest PM of Thailand by Petch Petpailin Photo by Wason Wanichakorn via AP In a stunning political shake-up, Paetongtarn “Aung Aing” Shinawatra is the new Prime Minister of Thailand, following in the illustrious footsteps of her father, former PM Thaksin Shinawatra. Making waves as both the youngest and second female prime minister in Thai history, Paetongtarn is already grabbing headlines and stirring excitement across the nation. The House of Representatives held a special parliamentary meeting today, August 16, at 10am, to select the new PM of Thailand after the Constitutional Court removed former PM Srettha Thavisin from his position over a serious violation of political ethics. Following the vacancy in the PM’s office, there was much speculation about which politician would assume the role, with seven names from the five coalition government parties emerging as prominent candidates. These included: Paetongtarn and former advisor to the ex-PM Chaikasem Nitisiri from the Pheu Thai Party, Bhumjaithai Party leader Anutin Charnvirakul, Palang Pracharath Party leader Prawit Wongsuwon, Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party leader Pirapan Salirathavibhaga, former Democrat Party leader Jurin Laksanawisit, and the former PM Prayut Chan-o-cha. Initially, Chaikasem was widely regarded as the frontrunner for the Pheu Thai Party’s prime ministerial nomination, having been put forward for the position in both 2019 and 2023. However, his candidacy was marred by controversy even before it was formally announced. Critics raised concerns about his health, arguing that the Thai prime minister should be in peak physical condition—a point that was problematic for Chaikasem, who faced scrutiny over his health issues. Additionally, there were suggestions that Chaikasem might have faced disqualification on ethical grounds, similar to Srettha. Leader of Pheu Thai Party, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, daughter of Thailand's former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, talks to reporters during a press conference in Bangkok, Thailand, Thursday, Aug. 15, 2024. (AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit) Paetongtarn Shinawatra, 37, was elected as Thailand's 31st Prime Minister on Friday, gaining majority support from the House of Representatives. She becomes the country's youngest and second female leader. The House approved Ms. Paetongtarn with 319 votes in favor, 145 against, 27 abstentions, and 2 non-votes. As the daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, she brings a blend of political legacy and business expertise to the role. She holds degrees from Chulalongkorn University and the University of Surrey in the UK and has served as CEO of Rende Development, managing hotel and golf course enterprises. Her rise follows the Constitutional Court's decision on Wednesday to oust her predecessor, Srettha Thavisin, for ethics violations related to a Cabinet appointment. The new Pheu Thai-led government faces immediate challenges, including economic recovery and the future of the controversial Digital Wallet project. Coalition dynamics are expected to remain largely stable, with potential minor adjustments in Cabinet positions. Paetongtarn previously held leadership roles in national soft power and mental health committees under the Srettha administration. Economic stability and the Digital Wallet project, a contentious initiative aimed at transforming the local economy, are expected to be top priorities for Paetongtarn's administration. The public remains divided on the project's feasibility and impact, making it a critical issue during her tenure. Beyond economic policies, Paetongtarn is likely to focus on strengthening Thailand's international relations and enhancing domestic welfare programs. Her combination of youth and experience offers a dynamic leadership profile that many hope will effectively address Thailand's pressing challenges. As Thailand enters this new chapter, all eyes will be on Paetongtarn Shinawatra and her Cabinet to deliver on their promises and guide the nation toward a brighter future. -- 2024-08-16 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. Kuwaiti man assaulted in Phuket after insulting Thais (video) by Petch Petpailin Photo via Khao Phuket Two Thai men physically assaulted a Kuwaiti man near Soi Bangla in the Patong neighbourhood of Phuket after the foreigner allegedly insulted Thai people. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1335673-kuwaiti-man-assaulted-in-phuket-after-insulting-thais-video/ -
Two Thai men physically assaulted a Kuwaiti man near Soi Bangla in the Patong neighbourhood of Phuket after the foreigner allegedly insulted Thai people. Officers from Patong Police Station were alerted to the gang attack on the tourist at about 7.20am on Tuesday, August 13, and rushed to the scene, a road near Soi Bangla in the Kathu district of Phuket. Officers found the injured foreigner, later identified as 32 year old Naeaaf Al Otajbi, at the scene. Police called rescuers from the Kusol Dham Foundation to transfer Otajbi to a hospital. Otajbi reportedly returned home immediately after receiving treatment. He told police that he needed to rest and would take legal action against the attackers later. Following brief questioning at the hospital, Otajbi said he was on his way to his accommodation when the attackers approached and assaulted him. Police reviewed security camera footage from the scene and found two attackers, one of whom was a motorcycle taxi rider, attacking the Kuwaiti man until he collapsed on the road and lost consciousness. The attackers then left the scene separately. Channel 8 reported that the Kuwaiti man had not filed a complaint with the police since the incident, but officers managed to arrest the two attackers featured in the video yesterday, August 15. The two Thai attackers claimed that Otajbi could speak Thai but not fluent. They alleged that Otajbi insulted Thai people loudly while intoxicated. The attackers stated they could not bear the insult and launched the attack on the foreigner. However, the police are unable to legally punish the attackers because legal proceedings require a complaint from the Kuwaiti victim. Police would file charges against the attackers once the foreign victim comes forward. In a similar incident, a group of Thai transwomen gang attacked a foreign man in Soi Bangla in May, claiming that the foreigner had slapped one of them without reason. One transwoman claimed that the foreigner previously rode a motorcycle around the area, randomly kicking and annoying people. Another related incident occurred in Phuket in March when two Thai transwomen physically assaulted two foreign men in the Patong area. It is suspected that they argued over the price of sex services before the altercation took place. by Petch Petpailin Photo via Khao Phuket Source: The Thaiger 2024-08-16 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. A woman experienced a terrifying ordeal when the lift she was using at her condo in Bangkok suddenly plummeted from the 32nd floor and stopped at the 15th floor, leaving her shaken. A TikTok user with the handle @somo_41456 shared a harrowing video of the incident that took place at a condominium yesterday, August 15. In her post, she recounted how the lift unexpectedly dropped several floors. “If this happened to an elderly person, they could have had a heart attack! “The lift fell from the 32nd floor and stopped at the 15th floor. I crawled out of the lift, shaking with fear. The condo staff said they were watching the cameras.” The user was visibly distressed and trembling after the near-disastrous event. Once the lift doors opened, condominium staff arrived to assist her. She explained what had happened, still in shock from the incident. After the video was posted, it quickly garnered numerous comments from concerned viewers. “We should press the button for every floor if the lift falls; it helps to slow it down.” “Everything happened so fast. If she only had the presence of mind to press the alarm button.” “It likely just slipped, not fell. If it had truly fallen, it would have been much more forceful. Lifts have multiple brake and safety systems. The descent was part of the system’s design; actual falls are quite rare.” The TikTok video, accompanied by the original sound from the user, sparked a discussion about lift safety and emergency procedures. While some viewers offered practical advice, others reassured her about the safety mechanisms in place in modern lifts. The condominium management has not yet provided an official statement regarding the incident. However, the event has left a lasting impression on the TikTok user and many others who viewed her post, reported KhaoSod. In related news, a technician, believed to be a Thai national, tragically lost his life on August 13 while repairing a lift at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok. by Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of Titkok @somo_41456 Source: The Thaiger 2024-08-16 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. Thai tourist praised for removing sticker from Mount Fuji by Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of KhaoSod A Thai tourist removed a controversial sticker placed by a popular travel page on Mount Fuji, sparking widespread gratitude on social media. A Thai tourist removed a controversial sticker placed by a popular travel page on Mount Fuji, sparking widespread gratitude on social media. The travel page, followed by over 37,000 people, recently orchestrated a romantic proposal at the summit of Japan’s iconic mountain. They marked the occasion by attaching a sticker bearing their page’s name to a pole along the hiking path. The page’s owner clarified that permission had been granted by local government officials, and the location was deemed appropriate for such stickers. However, the action drew significant backlash online, raising questions about the propriety of the act. “A follower spotted the post while climbing the mountain and decided to remove the sticker without much thought. They recorded the act and shared it with us. We are immensely grateful for this gesture. “Sometimes, removing things can be a good deed, especially when it involves preserving tourist sites. We apologise if any details were missed. While some places allow stickers, it doesn’t mean it’s acceptable everywhere.” The post quickly garnered numerous comments and expressions of thanks. “Sincerely, thank you so much.” “When exploring nature, avoid actions that harm the environment, like littering or carving names.” Another comment drew parallels to a previous incident where a couple wrote on a bridge in Japan, only for a kind individual to remove the graffiti. The incident has reignited discussions about respecting natural sites and the responsibilities of tourists. It also prompted comparisons to another controversy involving a couple defacing a bridge in Japan, which similarly saw a kind-hearted individual rectifying the damage. The travel page in question had faced severe criticism earlier for promoting behaviour deemed disrespectful to one of Japan’s most revered natural landmarks. Despite the page owner’s explanation that local authorities had allowed the sticker placement, the online community remained largely unconvinced, emphasising the importance of preserving nature, reported KhaoSod. by Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger 2024-08-16 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. Thai police arrested over 30 youths, aged 14 to 18, armed with knives and homemade bombs, waiting to ambush rivals in Udon Thani. The incident occurred at 2am yesterday, August 15, prompting a swift response and investigation. Police in Udon Thani received a report about a group of teenagers involved in a brawl at Thai Siri 3 Market, Ban Wua Khong, Ban Lueam subdistrict in the city’s main district. Upon receiving the alert, Deputy Inspector Sata Porn Sawasdee from Udon Thani Provincial Police Station led a team to the scene. Officers arrived at a canal near Thai Siri 3 Market to find a group of over 30 teenagers gathered. As soon as they spotted the police, many attempted to flee on motorcycles, but the officers managed to detain 12 individuals. These detainees, aged between 14 and 18, were found in possession of two homemade bombs, four curved knives, two swords, three motorcycles, and one motorcycle with a sidecar. Initial investigations revealed that the youths came from different villages within the Chiang Pin subdistrict. They had planned to ride their motorcycles to various locations where teenagers usually congregate, such as Thung Sri Muang Park, city parks, and the train station. Their modus operandi was to chase and attack rivals upon encountering them or to lay in wait at spots frequented by their adversaries. This pattern of behaviour has been observed in multiple areas. The police have taken all the detained individuals to Udon Thani Police Station for further questioning and legal proceedings. “We acted quickly after receiving the report, and fortunately, we managed to prevent what could have been a dangerous confrontation. These young individuals had planned to cause harm.” Police investigation Further investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of the group’s activities and whether they have been involved in similar incidents in the past. Police are also looking into the origins of the homemade bombs and the potential risk they pose to public safety. Residents have expressed their concern over the increasing incidents of youth violence in the area. “It’s alarming to see such young people involved in violent activities. We hope the authorities can address this issue effectively to ensure the safety of our community.” Police urge parents and guardians to closely monitor their children’s activities and encourage them to engage in positive and constructive behaviours. Community leaders are also being called upon to promote initiatives that can help steer youths away from violence and towards more productive endeavours. The police have reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and order in the region, emphasising that any acts of violence will be met with strict legal action. The arrested youths now face potential charges related to illegal possession of weapons and explosives, as well as participation in violent activities, reported KhaoSod. by Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger 2024-08-16 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. Naked foreign man gored by cow after alleged sexual abuse by Petch Petpailin Photo via Matichon A foreign man refused medical treatment after being gored by a cow in the southern province of Surat Thani. Rescuers suspected that the foreigner attempted to sexually abuse the animal. Officers from Ban Naderm Police Station and the Ban Naderm Rescue Foundation were called to a roadside forest along Highway 44 (Surat Thani-Krabi Road) to assist the foreign man, who had been attacked by a brown cow owned by a resident. Matichon reported that the cow, which was tied to a wooden pole, repeatedly gored the 35 year old foreign man, who was naked at the time. The foreigner attempted to fend off the cow by holding onto its horns but was unsuccessful. The cow eventually flung him aside and was about to charge again when rescuers managed to drag the foreign man away just in time. The cow’s owner was called to the scene to calm the animal down. Police reported that, despite the cow’s attack, the foreign man did not sustain any visible wounds or bruises, but he was unable to communicate with the officers. The foreigner reportedly became agitated, so he was taken to Ban Naderm Hospital for further evaluation. Channel 3 reported that the foreigner refused a medical examination and treatment, leaving the hospital immediately. Officers did not have the opportunity to question him or conduct a drug test. A witness told the media that the foreign man had stopped at the scene because his motorcycle’s tyre was punctured. He then disappeared into the roadside forest, where locals later found him naked and being attacked by the cow. The rescue team speculated that the foreign man might have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs and may have attempted to have sex with the animal before the attack occurred. In a related incident in April, a foreign man was condemned by Thai netizens after bathing in a small pool in front of a shrine in Bangkok and later defecating in the pool. In the same month, another foreigner, a British man, faced criticism for walking naked along Ao Nang Beach in the southern province of Krabi. The Englishman later apologised to the locals, explaining that his actions were driven by alcohol. An 11-year-old boy was electrocuted while waiting for a bus, before his hand accidentally hit a bus stop light box, causing some nerve damage. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has ordered inspections of all bus stop light boxes. In the case of social media posting a picture and stating that a male student was electrocuted at a pole and then shook his hand out, causing the iron to cut and sever tendons, at a bus stop on Sukhumvit Road 71 on August 15, 2024. The Thai PBS news team went to the scene and found that the incident occurred at a bus stop on Sukhumvit 71 Road between Soi Pridi Banomyong 15 and Soi 17, and it is a stop where many bus lines pass by. Mr. Chanpetch Nilkamhaeng, the father of the 11-year-old boy who was injured, revealed that after school, his son and his grandmother were waiting for a bus at this bus stop to go home, reported Thai PBS. But while waiting for the bus, his son put his left arm on the electric box at the bus stop and felt like he was electrocuted. So he pulled his arm out and shook his hand, hitting the electric box, which was stainless steel, cutting his left little finger and causing injury. When he went to the hospital for treatment, the doctor performed surgery and found that the tendons in his finger were not severed, but some nerves were damaged. He will need treatment and recovery for observation for 1 month. Mr. Wisanu Traiphumpol, Deputy Governor of Bangkok (BMA), said after inspecting the bus stop where the incident occurred that an initial inspection of the electrical box did not find any damage and no short circuits were found. A detailed investigation will be required to find the real cause. As for the medical expenses of the injured, the BMA will be responsible for all of them. The deputy governor of Bangkok also ordered officials to inspect electrical cabinets located at every bus stop in Bangkok to see if any are damaged. For long-term safety, other materials will be considered to cover the electrical cabinets to increase public safety. Thailand’s health crackdown: Screening mpox-treme measures by Bob Scott Picture courtesy of The Indian Express Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health is on high alert, ramping up passenger screening like never before to fend off a potential mpox outbreak. Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health is on high alert, ramping up passenger screening like never before to fend off a potential mpox outbreak. This drastic measure comes hot on the heels of the World Health Organisation (WHO) slapping a “public health emergency of international concern” label on the situation, following a surge of mpox cases in several African nations. Dr Weerawat Manosuthi, the voice of the Department of Disease Control (DDC), reassured the public that Thailand is still holding steady. “Rest assured, the situation here is under control.” Mpox, deemed a serious threat under the Communicable Disease Act BE 2558 (2015), demands immediate notification to health authorities if detected. According to the latest figures from the DDC, Thailand has seen 827 cases and 11 fatalities from January 1, 2022, up to yesterday. And get this—men make up a whopping 97.46% of those affected, Dr Weerawat revealed. But it’s not all doom and gloom. Thailand’s mpox cases have dropped compared to last year, thanks to a vigorous public information campaign. Dr Weerawat highlighted the department’s careful and proactive approach to managing the crisis. The primary mpox strain affecting African countries, known as “clade I,” is more dangerous than other strains. Thankfully, this strain has not been detected in Thailand, said Dr Weerawat. “We have prepared necessary measures to prevent the disease infections, including at the borders and international airports. They must report to the public health authority if they have [mpox] symptoms.” The department has distributed medical guidelines to all hospitals nationwide to ensure close monitoring and identification of any suspected clade I cases. Additionally, a specialised team has been assembled to investigate suspected cases, provide necessary medication, and conduct laboratory tests across the country. Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, on August 14 highlighted the upsurge of mpox in DR Congo and other central African nations as a PHEIC. “The emergence of a new clade of mpox, its rapid spread in eastern [DR Congo], and the reporting of cases in several neighbouring countries are very worrying. “On top of outbreaks of other mpox clades in DRC and other countries in Africa, it’s clear that a coordinated international response is needed to stop these outbreaks and save lives.” by Bob Scott Picture courtesy of The Indian Express Source: The Thaiger 2024-08-16 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. FILE - Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. (AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit, File) Pheu Thai Party patriarch Thaksin Shinawatra has reportedly instructed the ruling party to drop its digital wallet flagship policy. This direction came just hours after the Constitutional Court ousted Thailand's PM Srettha Thavisin from his position as prime minister. On Wednesday evening, during a meeting at his Chan Song Lar residence with key party members, Thaksin urged his daughter, Pheu Thai leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra, to halt the 450-billion-baht scheme for digital handouts of 10,000 baht. With the economy on shaky ground, he argued the timing was inappropriate for such an extensive expenditure, according to party sources. The digital wallet scheme, designed to spur spending, has drawn considerable criticism due to its hefty price tag. Initially estimated at 500 billion baht, the project’s cost was later trimmed to 450 billion, to be funded over two fiscal years—2024 and 2025, reported The Nation. Previously, Caretaker Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat was adamant that the scheme would proceed regardless of Srettha's political fate. However, his stance shifted post-meeting at Thaksin's residence. On Thursday, Julapun acknowledged that the scheme's continuation now depended on the new prime minister and Cabinet’s decisions. Speaking to reporters at Parliament, he stated: "When a new prime minister is elected and forms the new Cabinet, the government will need to present its policies to Parliament again. We must respect the incoming PM's choices on government policies." Julapun noted that Pheu Thai planned to discuss the digital wallet scheme with its coalition partners during Cabinet formation negotiations. Each partner's policies would be reviewed, making it uncertain which policies would be adopted. In the interim, subcommittees responsible for implementing the digital wallet scheme would continue holding meetings until the new Cabinet reached a decision. The Finance Ministry’s permanent secretary, Lawan Saengsanit, would lead these meetings on Julapun's behalf. Though the project's future remains unclear, it's evident the party is bracing for significant policy shifts in the wake of Srettha's removal. -- 2024-08-16 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. He completed his high school education at Mahavajiravudh School and earned a Master's degree in Criminology and Justice Administration from Mahidol University, as well as two Ph.D. degrees—one in Public Administration from Eastern Asia University and another in Criminology, Justice Administration, and Society (Special Program) from Mahidol University. He also served as Director of the Center for the Protection of Children, Women, Families, and Prevention of Human Trafficking and Fisheries (CPCR) under the Royal Thai Police. In this role, Pol. Gen. Surachate noted that international organizations had evaluated Thailand more favorably and pushed for improvements in criminal record management and updates to police regulations regarding fingerprinting procedures in 2023, reported Daily News. Before the order to remove him from his position, Pol. Gen. Surachate used the Police Club on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road as a space to receive complaints from citizens who felt they had been treated unfairly by the justice system. As of today (August 15), the Royal Gazette website published the Prime Minister's Office announcement officially dismissing Pol. Gen. Surachate from his position due to severe misconduct allegations that led to the establishment of an investigative committee. Pol. Gen. A gang of loan sharks shockingly threw an M79 grenade at a car repair shop in Chaiyaphum Province after a debtor reported them to the police. Thankfully, the grenade did not explode. The incident unfolded on August 15 when Mr. Chatchawet, 55, owner of the shop on Niwet Rat Road, notified the police after discovering the unexploded device. Mr. Chatchawet explained that he had gone to retrieve spare parts when he found the grenade. His quick thinking led him to call the authorities immediately. Earlier, on August 9, Mr. Chatchawet had reported a gang of high-interest loan sharks to the Muang Chaiyaphum Police Station. These loan sharks, described as three men aged between 35 and 40, had threatened his elderly parents. They drove a modified Isuzu D-Max pickup without a licence plate. The police pursued the gang and initiated legal actions, reported Daily News. Picture courtesy: Daily News The issue began in early July when Mr. Chatchawet borrowed 12,000 baht from the gang, receiving only 9,000 baht after deductions. They imposed a daily interest rate of 20 baht, demanding a daily payment of 500 baht. When Mr. Chatchawet’s father fell seriously ill and was hospitalised, the family couldn't meet the loan repayments. This led the gang to storm the shop and intimidate his father. The financial hardship and subsequent threats compelled Mr. Chatchawet to seek police intervention. He provided video evidence against the gang, spurring police action. The aggressive throw of the grenade is believed to be retaliation for his complaint. As investigations continue, Mr. Chatchawet calls for justice, hoping the authorities will apprehend the gang to prevent further threats. This unnerving episode highlights the severe risks associated with predatory lending and underscores the need for stringent enforcement against illegal loan practices.
