  1. Pictures courtesy: 77kaoded A thrilling parasailing adventure turned into a frightening ordeal for a tourist when a sudden wind change left him precariously perched atop a 5-metre pine tree on Kamala Beach in Phuket. Emergency services, including the local police, responded quickly, employing a crane truck to safely rescue the young man. Surasit Wandee, a deputy investigator at Kamala Police Station, reported that the incident occurred at around 6 pm on July 1. Mohammed Ali Warrad Abdul Wahab, 26, found himself stranded after an abrupt shift in the wind caused his parasail to deviate off course, entangling him in the tree's upper branches. First responders arrived promptly upon receiving the call and discovered Abdul Wahab swaying from the treetop. Coordinating with the Kamala Subdistrict Administrative Organisation, they employed a crane truck to lower him safely to the ground. Fortunately, Abdul Wahab was uninjured, albeit shaken from the ordeal. "The rapid change in wind direction likely caused the parasail to lift the tourist into the tree," Wandee explained. This mishap serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety and preparation when engaging in extreme sports. Authorities have stressed the need for thorough safety briefings for all tourists participating in parasailing activities. They also urged operators to keep a close eye on weather forecasts and ensure that their equipment is regularly inspected and maintained. This isn't an isolated incident. In a similar occurrence, a Thai parasailing operator recently compensated a Chinese tourist with 400,000 baht after she sustained a leg injury on Karon Beach due to a parasailing accident. Like Abdul Wahab’s incident, the cause was attributed to a sudden wind shift despite claims of adhered safety protocols. Tourists are advised to follow all safety measures and heed instructions to avoid potential dangers while enjoying such exhilarating activities. -- 2024-07-02 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

  3. A Thai woman filed a complaint with the police after a Bolt driver in Phuket entered her condominium room in the Patong sub-district and slept with her in her bed. The 25 year old woman, Nan, shared her story with the Phuket Times to warn other women and urge the app-based driver not to repeat his actions. According to Nan, the incident took place at around 2am on July 1 when she was drunk. Nan explained that she attended her friend’s farewell party in Phuket city centre and booked a ride through the Bolt app to return to her condominium in the Patong area. She admitted to being intoxicated and slept throughout the journey. Nan disclosed that the driver who picked her up was a man aged around 30. She arrived at her condominium at about 2.55am and paid 306 baht for the trip. She then entered her room and fell asleep. Nan was stunned to see that the man was the Bolt driver who took her home. The man realised that Nan was aware of his presence but remained in the room and played with Nan’s cat for over 30 minutes before leaving. Bolt driver Nan checked the condo’s CCTV footage and found that the Bolt driver had parked his car in the condo car park after Nan had entered. He then went to Nan’s room and let himself in. Nan admitted that she had never locked the door because she always arrived at the room before her roommate and left it open for her. “I don’t know what I want from him. I only know that I’m very frightened. The CCTV footage clearly shows his actions. I can confirm that I don’t know this man personally. I had never experienced anything like this before. It’s shocking. I don’t want him to do this to anyone else. It’s scary.” The Phuket Times reported that Nan filed a complaint against the Bolt driver at Patong Police Station but officers have not yet reported the next step in their investigation. Many Thai netizens wanted to hear the Bolt driver’s side of the story. Some stated that the driver would not have known Nan’s room number unless she had told him. Others suspected that Nan might have invited him into her room while drunk but could not remember doing so. by Petch Petpailin Photo via Facebook/ Phuket Times ภูเก็ตไทม์ Source: The Thaiger 2024-07-02 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

  5. A well-known singer and hotel owner in Samut Prakan is facing a hefty copyright fee after posting a live music performance clip online. This incident has sparked a significant discussion on social media about copyright laws and their implications. Kittiphan Leesatruapai, also known as Nath Leatana, owns a hotel in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan. Recently, he shared his story on TikTok, aiming to warn other musicians and business owners. Kittiphan explained that he was served with a notice for copyright infringement after performing a Thai song, "Thon Tua," and posting the clip on social media. The notice did not come directly from the artists but from an intermediary representing them. To settle the issue, Kittiphan paid a fine of 50,000 baht, although the initial demand was much higher, reaching into the hundreds of thousands. He then deleted all copyrighted songs from his social media platforms and ensured that only properly licensed music was performed live or in his hotel and restaurant. However, the issue did not end there. About a month later, the same individual returned with a list of ten songs, each accompanied by a demand for a 100,000 baht copyright fee. The person claimed to be authorised by the songwriters to collect these fees, putting Kittiphan in an even more challenging position. Kittiphan expressed his frustration, noting that these were songs he had loved and performed since his youth. When he started his hotel and restaurant, his band initially did not perform many old songs. However, over the past two years, they incorporated these tracks into their performances, believing they had the proper licenses for in-house use. He admitted that he was unaware that posting clips of these performances on social media constituted another form of copyright infringement. Despite the financial burden, Kittiphan acknowledged that the experience had significantly increased his understanding of copyright laws. Kittiphan’s story underscores the complexities of copyright laws and serves as a cautionary tale for musicians and business owners. 7. A Bangkok taxi driver brandished brass knuckles and other weapons in an alarming road rage incident, leaving other drivers in fear. The incident was reported on social media by a prominent Facebook page which shared a video clip sent by a concerned follower. A public taxi driver, wearing a strikingly patterned shirt, reportedly displayed brass knuckles and an array of weapons in broad daylight. The event occurred yesterday at 1.52pm on Ratchadaphisek Road, near The Street shopping mall. The video shows the taxi attempting to force its way into another lane, disregarding the solid lane markings. The driver of the vehicle being encroached upon refused to brake, preventing the taxi from merging. The taxi driver responded aggressively, pulling alongside the other vehicle and lowering his window to hurl profanities. He then motioned for the other driver to pull over while flaunting brass knuckles. The driver, alarmed by the threat, sped away. The taxi pursued, displaying a baseball bat and other weapons through the window. The Facebook post warned the public about the orange Bangkok taxi, describing the driver as immature and dangerous, posing a significant risk to fellow road users. The original poster sought legal advice on possible actions to take against the aggressive driver. The post quickly gained traction, with many expressing their concern and sharing similar experiences with aggressive taxi drivers in the city. The incident has raised questions about the safety of public transportation and the mental stability of some drivers. This incident underscores the importance of road safety and the need for stringent measures to ensure that those who operate public vehicles are fit to do so. The alarming display of weaponry by the taxi driver not only endangered the life of the individual involved in the incident but also highlighted a broader issue of road rage and driver conduct within Bangkok. by Ryan Turner Image courtesy of KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger 2024-07-02 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

  10. Bangkok airport’s automatic passport control ready for check-in by Ryan Turner Image courtesy of KhaoSod The head of the Thai Immigration Bureau inspected the readiness of Suvarnabhumi International Airport’s new automatic passport control channels, which will start being used by Thai citizens tomorrow, July 3. He also took the time to dine with the immigration officers, expressing the need to uphold their welfare. The Commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, Ittipol Ittisarnronnachai, visited the immigration checkpoint at Suvarnabhumi Airport, where Immigration Bureau Chief Cherngron Rimphadi warmly received his arrival. Ittipol revealed that the visit was to check the readiness of the newly installed automatic passport control channels. The project, supported by the Airports of Thailand (AoT), aims to enhance the efficiency of the immigration process. Initially, 56 automatic channels will be installed at the departure area, up from the previous 16 channels. Today, July 2, 13 of these channels will be operational, with the rest to follow soon. In this initial phase, the system will first be used exclusively for Thai nationals. The Immigration Bureau received confirmation from AoT that the automatic passport control channels for Thai passports are fully functional. The process takes no more than 20 seconds per individual. The AoT will conduct further tests to integrate the system with the Immigration Bureau’s biometric systems before it is opened to foreigners. During his visit, Ittipol took the opportunity to dine with the on-duty immigration officers, sharing the same meal provided for their welfare. He emphasised the importance of good quality, sufficient quantity, and delicious-tasting meals for the officers. He also extended his gratitude to the AoT for their support of the Immigration Bureau operations, reported KhaoSod. The introduction of these new automatic channels is part of a broader initiative to modernise and streamline the immigration process at one of the busiest airports in the region. Located in the heart of the kingdom, Suvarnabhumi Airport is a primary gateway for international travellers, and the new system is expected to handle a higher volume of passengers more efficiently. The long-term plan includes expanding the automatic passport control channels to the arrival area, once the initial phase proves successful. The use of biometric data aims to enhance security and speed up the immigration process, ensuring that both Thai citizens and international visitors can pass through the airport with minimal delay. 12. Two noodle vendors struck gold by winning the top prize in the Thai government lottery, each receiving 6 million baht. The lucky pair attributed their win to a handsome lottery ticket seller who persuaded them to buy the last two tickets he had. The Thai government lottery results were announced for the draw held yesterday, July 1. The winning number for the first prize was 434503. Other notable numbers included 839 and 975 for the three-digit front prize, 778 and 647 for the three-digit end prize, and 89 for the two-digit end prize. At 5pm yesterday, 30 year old Napaporn and 28 year old Thittiya, went to the Chaiwan Police Station to record their lottery win. Both women, who run a noodle shop in Chaiwan District, Udon Thani Province, held one winning ticket each, numbers 23 and 24 of the series, totalling 6 million baht per person. The police celebrated the occasion by playing traditional Isaan music, adding a festive atmosphere to the formal proceedings. Reporters later visited the modest, unnamed noodle shop located along the Chaiwan-Nong Han Road, opposite the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, Chaiwan branch. The two women were busy closing the shop after a long day, still visibly elated from their win. When the lottery results were announced, they had been anxiously watching at their shop, and upon realizing they had won, their jubilation was uncontainable. Napaporn shared that she and her employee, Thittiya, frequently bought lottery tickets together but had never won before. The day before, a good-looking young lottery ticket seller visited their shop and asked them to buy the last two tickets he had. Napaporn decided to purchase them. “We opened the shop as usual in the morning and made offerings for good fortune. I even lit incense and got the number 79, but I didn’t buy a ticket with that number. I also vowed that if I won the first prize, I would donate 1 million baht each to complete the Buddha statue at our village temple.” Good fortune Throughout the day, they continued their work, only to gather in the afternoon to watch the lottery draw. The revelation that they had won left Napaporn overwhelmed with joy. A few nights earlier, she had dreamt of deceased relatives asking her for food, which she now believes was a sign of impending good fortune. Napaporn is also five months pregnant with her second child and feels that the baby brought her luck. “We will close the shop for a while to claim the prize money. After that, I will use the funds to complete the Buddha statue, repay family debts, and resume selling noodles.” Thittiya described the moment they discovered their win. “We screamed with joy. I didn’t have any premonitions or dreams, but I believe our luck came from the vow to donate for the Buddha statue’s completion.” Initially, she had planned to donate 500,000 baht if she won the first prize but Napaporn convinced her to contribute 1 million baht. Thittiya, originally from Sakon Nakhon, had been working in Nong Han District for just three months. Following their win, she plans to use her winnings to repay a loan from the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives and complete her house construction. The two women’s story stands as a testament to the unexpected twists of fate and the joy that can come from a simple act of kindness, like buying a couple of lottery tickets. by Bob Scott Picture courtesy: Sanook -- 2024-07-02 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

  14. Thailand continues to emerge as a strategic hub for investment in data centres and cloud services, driven by the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital services in the region. Board of Investment (BOI) Secretary General, Narit Therdsteerasukdi, highlighted that 37 projects worth 98.539 billion baht have already been approved for investment in data centres and cloud services. These projects are predominantly located in Bangkok, Samut Prakan, Chonburi, and Rayong. Leading global companies have made significant investments in establishing data centres in Thailand. Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced an investment of over 200 billion baht to build data centres in Thailand by 2037. In the first phase, AWS has already invested over 25 billion baht to create three data centres. Other notable investments include Australia’s NextDC with 13.7 billion baht, Singapore’s STT GDC with 4.5 billion baht, and Singapore’s Evolution-Data Center with 4 billion baht. The United States’ Supernap (Switch) has invested 3 billion baht, Japan’s Telehouse 2.7 billion baht, and Hong Kong’s One Asia 2 billion baht. Moreover, global tech giants like Google and Microsoft have announced plans to invest in data centres in Thailand and are currently in discussions with the BOI and the prime minister’s team. The cloud service sector also sees substantial investments from leading companies. Alibaba Cloud has invested over 4 billion baht, while Huawei Technologies has invested over 3 billion baht. High-potential Thai companies, such as True Internet Data Center, Internet Thailand, and GSA (a joint venture between Gulf, Singtel, and AIS), are also investing significantly. **Thailand’s Attractiveness** Thailand’s attractiveness as an investment destination for data centres and cloud services is driven by five key advantages: 1. 16. In the early hours of this morning, Bang Khen police successfully disrupted a significant street racing event on Ram Inthra Road, Bangkok. The racers, approximately 50 in number, were observed racing and revving their engines around 3am but quickly scattered as police arrived on the scene. Despite their attempts to flee, one individual was apprehended. Receiving reports about the gathering, Police Colonel Anan Vorasart of Bang Khen Police Station directed patrol officers to the site in front of Soi Ram Inthra 10, located in the Anusawari district. Officers arrived in time to witness the large group of motorcyclists preparing for a race. Spotting the incoming police, the gathered motorcyclists swiftly dispersed, with many accelerating in different directions to avoid capture. In the ensuing chase, 23-year-old Chatirin, riding a white Honda motorcycle, was the sole individual apprehended. After his arrest, the police conducted a thorough search of his motorcycle. Chatirin was informed of his rights and charged with attempting to race on a public road. Post-arrest, he was transferred to the investigators at Bang Khen Police Station for further legal processing. This incident underscores the persistent problem of illegal motorcycle racing in Bangkok, posing significant dangers both to the participants and the public. The authorities continue to face challenges in curbing these illegal activities, which threaten the safety of other road users and pedestrians. In separate news, Bangkok police raided a karaoke and traditional massage parlour today, uncovering an illicit prostitution ring involving Thai and Laotian women. The establishment was found to have over ten rooms repurposed for illegal activities. The owner has confessed and the establishment is now under investigation by the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division (ATPD), led by Saruti Kwangsopa. Officers from the Nong Chok Police Station collaborated in the raid, aiming to dismantle the illegal operation. 18. On 1st July 2023, Pol. Lt. Gen. Itthiphol Ithisarnronnachai, Commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, inspected the new automatic passport control gates at Suvarnabhumi Airport. Welcomed by Pol. Maj. Gen. Cheeringron Rimphadee, the inspection highlighted the introduction of new e-gates designed to streamline the passport control process for Thai nationals. Pol. Lt. Gen. Itthiphol explained that the new Automatic Channels, a project supported by Airports of Thailand (AOT), will be phased in gradually. Initially, 13 of the planned 56 new e-gates have been activated at the departure area. Once complete, these new gates will enhance the current setup, which only had 16 e-gates, significantly speeding up the process. For now, these will serve only Thai citizens, while foreign nationals will continue using the older systems, reported Siam Rath. The system’s efficiency has been validated, with Pol. Lt. Gen. Itthiphol noting that each passenger takes no more than 20 seconds to process through the new e-gates. This marks a significant improvement in travel efficiency and passenger convenience at the airport. Furthermore, preparations are underway to test the biometric capabilities of these gates fully. Once these tests, conducted in collaboration with AOT, are successful, the new gates will also cater to foreign travellers. During his visit, Pol. Lt. Gen. Itthiphol also shared a meal with on-duty immigration officers, ensuring their welfare by stressing the importance of good quality and tasty food. He expressed gratitude towards AOT for their continued support and cooperation with the Immigration Bureau. 19. Constitutional Court to Rule on Key Political Cases by September File photo cortesy: TLHF The Constitutional Court is expected to wrap up two critical cases, involving the Move Forward Party (MFP) and Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, by September. 20. The Constitutional Court is expected to wrap up two critical cases, involving the Move Forward Party (MFP) and Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, by September. Court president Nakharin Mektrairat revealed the court's timeline as it prepares to review evidence and potentially initiate inquiries into both matters. Key aspects of the cases: 1. **Move Forward Party (MFP)**: - The MFP is fighting a case that could lead to its dissolution. The Election Commission (EC) filed this case in March following a January 31 court ruling that framed the MFP’s attempts to amend Section 112 of the Criminal Code as undermining the constitutional monarchy. - The EC argues that under Section 92 of the law on political parties, any party threatening the constitutional monarchy can be dissolved. Consequently, the EC seeks to ban the MFP's executives from future elections, and bar them from holding executive positions in any new party for ten years. 2. **Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin**: - Another case scrutinises PM Srettha’s appointment of Pichit Chuenban as a PM’s Office minister. A group of 40 senators filed a petition to remove Srettha, claiming that Pichit was unfit due to his past jail time for contempt of court in a 2008 land case involving former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. - Although the court dismissed the charges against Pichit after he stepped down, it decided to proceed with the case against Srettha, focusing on possible ethical violations. The court will discuss evidence during its upcoming Wednesday session. Court president Nakharin stressed that every judge holds the freedom to decide independently. Context: - Early last month, MFP chief adviser Pita Limjaroenrat publicly asserted that the Constitutional Court lacked the authority to dissolve the party, stirring considerable debate. - The court had previously cautioned all parties to remain circumspect in their public comments, as ongoing expressions of opinion could mislead the public and influence the trial’s outcome. Mr Nakharin also mentioned that the court will review two other cases, including a legal challenge concerning the 2001 Thai-Cambodian memorandum on Gulf of Thailand joint development, filed by Palang Pracharath Party deputy leader Paiboon Nititawan. Transparency limits, especially in sensitive or national security cases, could affect judicial disclosures, Mr Nakharin pointed out in a separate forum. By resolving these pivotal cases by September, the Constitutional Court aims to clarify significant uncertainties in the nation’s political landscape.
