Picture courtesy: Komchadluek Thai cyber police have dismantled a Chinese-led Euro football betting network, arresting six Thai nationals and seizing assets worth over 282 million baht. This major operation, following a June crackdown on a similar network, aims to curb illegal gambling in the region. Police General Worawat Watnakhonbancha sanctioned the arrests on July 1. Within days, officers apprehended 47-year-old Narawut and three accomplices in Mae Sot, Tak Province. Simultaneously, two more were captured in Trang Province—one in Yan Ta Khao and the other in Kantang. These individuals are charged with facilitating unauthorised online gambling and conspiracy to commit money laundering. This effort, part of Operation Shutdown EURO Bet launched in June, demonstrates a concerted crackdown on illegal betting activities. In the operation's initial phase, officers targeted two locations linked to the Chinese gambling ring. The first raid, at a luxury residence in Bangkok's Thong Lor area, led to the arrest of a Chinese couple, Xiang Zhang, 42, and Zhang Huiqing, 37. Authorities seized significant assets, including 11 luxury condominium deeds, 13.8 million baht in cash, 3,200 US dollars (117,500 baht), 25,400 yuan, and luxury cars such as a Bentley worth 20 million baht and a Mercedes-Benz worth 3 million baht. They also froze 86,749,572 baht in bank accounts, altogether totalling over 260 million baht. A second raid occurred at a high-end mansion in Bangkok's Sukhumvit 39 area, capturing Jun Xia, 36, another Chinese mastermind, and four Thai cash handlers. Confiscated items included five vehicles, 2.26 million baht in cash, foreign currency, a computer, mobile phones, and a motorcycle, valued at over 22 million baht. Following these actions, police issued 64 arrest warrants, capturing seven critical suspects, including three Chinese leaders and four Thai financial operatives. Narawut and five others, involved in opening mule accounts, were among the latest to be apprehended. Authorities continue to pursue remaining network members while tracing financial routes to seize and freeze additional assets, ensuring a comprehensive legal crackdown. -- 2024-07-02 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit The national conversation in Thailand on the medical use of cannabis intensified this week, driven by an article from Associate Professor Dr Pattapong Kessomboon of Khon Kaen University’s Department of Family Medicine. Dr Pattapong's insightful piece challenged the prevalent misconceptions about cannabis, highlighting its significant, yet often ignored therapeutic benefits. Dr Pattapong addressed concerns that many critics focus solely on the recreational use of cannabis, neglecting its proven medical efficacy. He presented several compelling case studies and research, showcasing cannabis’s potential in treating various medical conditions. One notable instance included a patient with bipolar disorder who experienced significant improvement after switching from conventional medication to cannabis. Another case described an American veteran whose severe PTSD symptoms were managed effectively with cannabis, also averting suicidal thoughts. Israel, a global leader in cannabis research, has been allowing medical cannabis use for over two decades. The results have been impressive, with 87% of patients preferring cannabis products with 18% THC for smoking. In the United States, the legalisation of cannabis in 24 states saw usage increase from 11% in 2002 to 18% in 2022. Concurrently, cigarette smoking rates halved from 400 billion annually to 200 billion, reducing smoking-related illnesses. Dr Pattapong suggested that opposition to cannabis might be driven by fears of declining tobacco and pharmaceutical sales. He called for a reconsideration of cannabis regulations in light of its demonstrated medical benefits. Thailand, where cannabis was banned for 40 years, began reconsidering its stance with amendments to the Narcotics Act in 2018, led by Prof. Vicha Mahakun and Somchai Sawaengkan, which started facilitating its medical use. A study on 8,560 Thai patients using cannabis showed that the most common conditions treated were cancer (49.1%), pain (29.4%), and severe stress (6.4%). Key symptoms addressed with cannabis included insomnia (79.1%), pain (77.1%), and fatigue (55.6%). The study noted that 87% of patients preferred smoking products with 18% THC, while 67% opted for sublingual products with 15% CBD. Over six months, 55.4% to 90.8% of patients reported moderate to significant improvements without complications, with pain scores dropping from 6.7 to 3.4 out of 10. -- 2024-07-02 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

A Turkish man has been arrested in Bangkok for theft and cyber revenge after acting out of jealousy towards his ex-girlfriend. The incident unfolded on June 29 when Bangkok immigration police received a tip about a foreign suspect involved in a theft case. Upon receiving the information, the authorities quickly referred to an arrest warrant issued by the South Bangkok Criminal Court. The warrant described the suspect as having Eurasian features and suggested that he might be found at a well-known IT mall in the capital city. When the police arrived at the mall, they identified a muscular foreign man who matched the description. They approached him, confirmed his identity, and executed the arrest. The suspect, identified as Mr. Amir, a 26-year-old Turkish national, admitted to the police that he was indeed the person named in the warrant. Mr. Amir confessed that his actions were driven by jealousy and frustration after repeated unsuccessful attempts to reconcile with his ex-girlfriend. In a fit of rage and to spite her, he accosted her in the parking lot of a renowned mall in central Bangkok, snatching her phone and fleeing the scene. He later used the stolen phone to post her private photos on social media, intending to embarrass her. Authorities have noted that Mr. Amir had previously travelled in and out of Thailand 14 times. He now faces a series of charges including robbery, unauthorized access to a protected computer system, unauthorized access to protected computer data, and importing obscene computer data that could be publicly accessible. This case highlights the ongoing issues of cyber revenge and privacy violations in the digital age, reminding everyone to stay cautious of their digital footprints. The incident underscores the severe legal consequences for those attempting to use technology for malicious purposes. Bangkok authorities continue to monitor and address such incidents, ensuring justice for the victims and maintaining social order. A large-scale search effort is underway today in the Phang Nga Province after a 21-year-old Canadian tourist, identified as Christopher, went missing at sea. Christopher, who had been staying at Natai Beach, vanished from his hotel room around 9 a.m. yesterday, June 30. The Phang Nga Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, along with the Phuket Charity Foundation and several volunteers, quickly mobilised a search operation. Equipped with a rubber boat, they have been scouring the coastal waters in hopes of finding the young man. Initial investigations by the Takua Thung District Tourist Assistance Centre, involving questioning locals and combing through the area, point to the likelihood that Christopher might have drowned while swimming. However, the search team is leaving no stone unturned, determined to find any trace of the missing tourist. Leading the operation, Mr. Samon Saton, head of the Phang Nga Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, has instructed his team to bring all necessary equipment and a fast-response rescue vehicle to collaborate with the foundation staff and volunteers. Their combined efforts, however, have yet to bear fruit. The incident has raised concerns about the safety measures at popular tourist spots. The authorities are urging tourists to be cautious while swimming, especially during periods when the sea can be unpredictable. As the search continues, friends and family of Christopher are anxiously awaiting news. The local community has also shown great support, with many joining the search or offering help in various ways. Authorities are committed to finding Christopher as swiftly as possible and are encouraging anyone with information to come forward to aid in the search. The hope, as the hours tick by, is for a safe and positive resolution to this distressing situation. Picture courtesy: Naewna -- 2024-07-02 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

UPDATE 21 Moroccan held by call centre scam gang seeks Thailand’s help By Petch Petpailin Photo via Facebook/ The Reporters Moroccan nationals held captive by a call centre scam gang in Myanmar, near Tak province in northern Thailand, appealed to the Thai government for help. They reported being forced to commit fraud, physically assaulted and held for ransom. The Moroccans contacted The Exodus Road Foundation in April after being coerced into working as scammers by the gang in Myanmar’s Karen State, reportedly led by Chinese nationals. They shared pictures of themselves and their injuries with the foundation. The victims explained that they were invited to work in Thailand. However, upon arrival, they were taken to the scam gang’s headquarters in Myanmar and held for ransom, with demands ranging from US$6,000 to US$7,000 (about 250,000 baht). If unable to pay, they were forced to work as call centre scammers and might be transferred to other scam operations. The foundation reported the matter to the Moroccan Embassy in Thailand, the Myanmar Embassy, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on May 17. However, a month later, there was no progress on the case. Only two Moroccans were released in early June. They revealed they had travelled to Thailand for e-commerce jobs, promised US$1,000 initially and US$2,000 with improved skills. No update made Leaving Morocco on February 25 with five others, they arrived at Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport on March 2. They then travelled to the Mae Sot district in Tak province and were picked up by a minivan, which took them across the river to what they later learned was Myanmar. According to the victims, the scam gang leaders believed to be Chinese, took them to their headquarters and forced them into scamming operations. The foundation then turned to the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA), who investigated and identified each Moroccan victim. The DKBA and The Exodus Road Foundation then filed another complaint with Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and Fair Party MP Kannavee Suebsang, who has experience rescuing human trafficking victims from Myanmar. According to Channel 3, 21 Moroccans are seeking assistance, but more are believed to be held captive. Their families are worried, as some victims received death threats for exposing the scam operation. Kannavee emphasised that the Thai government should not ignore these lives, even if the crimes occurred outside Thailand. As of now, there are no updates from Thai authorities. An anti-human trafficking organisation urgently called upon Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin to assist 21 Moroccan citizens trapped by a scammer gang on the Thai-Myanmar border. This plea comes after months of inaction from various agencies. A prominent anti-trafficking group, Exodus Road, revealed the Moroccan Embassy in Bangkok had reached out for help on behalf of the victims. The embassy contacted multiple agencies, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Royal Thai Army, the Department of Special Investigation, and the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok through an official letter in mid-May. Since no progress has been reported, Exodus Road decided to escalate the matter to the prime minister. A source disclosed that the Moroccans were deceived by a Chinese transnational crime syndicate, promising them jobs in Thailand’s e-commerce sector with a starting salary of approximately US$1,000 (36,730 baht) per month. Upon their arrival in Thailand in February, the group was forcibly taken to Hpa Lu village in Myanmar’s Myawaddy district, close to Thailand’s Phob Phra district in Tak province. The victims are reportedly confined in a room and subjected to routine torture. They were coerced into contacting their relatives to demand US$6,000 to US$8,000 in ransom, with threats of being sold to another gang if the money was not paid. In April, five victims managed to have their families pay the ransom, yet they remain in captivity, according to the source. Exodus Road has also reached out to Fair Party MP Kannavee Suebsang for assistance. Kannavee previously played a crucial role in the evacuation of refugees in Laukkaing, Shan state, during a rebel siege. In a Facebook post on Friday, Kannavee highlighted that, apart from the Moroccan citizens, the Chinese-operated syndicate has also taken 41 Sri Lankans hostage in Myanmar. Kannavee has called on the government to initiate a rescue mission, with the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security taking the lead through the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) method. “Many gangs are operating out of ‘No Man’s Land’ right across the border from Tak’s Phob Phra district, due to the lack of law enforcement in the area and easy access to Thailand’s telecom infrastructure.” The alarming situation underscores the urgent need for coordinated rescue efforts and stricter law enforcement in border areas to prevent such human trafficking incidents, reported Bangkok Post. by Ryan Turner TOP: Another human trafficking group arrested in April, image courtesy of the CIB Source: The Thaiger 2024-07-01 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

In a neverending saga of Pattaya’s unfinished roadworks posing a threat to road users, a contractor’s negligence led to a motorcycle accident as a rider fell into an unmarked construction hole, injuring herself yesterday, June 30. Repeated incidents have frustrated locals. At 8.30pm, Pattaya’s Sawang Boriboon Rescue Centre in Chon Buri received a report of a motorcycle accident involving a construction hole on Phatthanakan Road in Nong Prue, Bang Lamung District. Upon arrival, rescue personnel discovered the injured woman, 28 year old Natthacha, who had already managed to climb out of the hole. Initial first aid was provided before she was transported to Bang Lamung Hospital for further treatment. The scene revealed a red Yamaha motorcycle partially submerged headfirst into the construction hole. Although metal barriers and plastic barricades bordered the excavation, there were no warning lights to signal the construction site. The area, known for its poor lighting, exacerbated the danger. Locals have voiced their concerns, noting that this is not an isolated incident. They have repeatedly contacted city officials but no effective measures have been taken to rectify the situation, resulting in frequent accidents at this particular spot. Natthacha, the injured rider, explained that she was on her way to deliver seafood in Pattaya when the accident occurred. The combination of light rain and the dark road conditions made it difficult to see the construction hole. The absence of warning lights led her to collide with a barricade, causing her motorcycle to lose control and fall into the hole. Police documented the scene and secured the motorcycle, awaiting Natthacha’s recovery before returning it to her. Pattaya police have pledged to coordinate with relevant agencies to address the hazardous conditions by installing clear construction warning lights and ensuring the safety of road users, reported KhaoSod. Local frustration continues to mount as residents emphasise the need for prompt and effective action to prevent further accidents. The repeated incidents at this location highlight the urgency for better safety measures and responsive governance. by Ryan Turner Image courtesy of KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger 2024-07-01 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Senatorial Race "The Century's Most Disgusting," Says Plodprasop

BJT defends senators-elect from criticism over backgrounds by Ryan Turner Image: Sakchai Lalit/AP Photo The Bhumjaithai Party (BJT) is calling for an end to the criticism targeting senators-elect over their backgrounds, asserting that the election process was designed to give candidates from all walks of life an equal opportunity to join the Upper House. BJT party member and former MP, Somsak Prissananantakul released a statement on Facebook today. “Some senators-elect come from ordinary backgrounds. They do not belong to wealthy clans or famous families. Some are not university graduates. Right now, they are being bullied by some critics who show nothing but disrespect for their dignity.” Somsak highlighted the case of a senator-elect in Ang Thong province, who is reportedly being criticised for her educational background. “She only finished [Year 12] and she makes her living as a tailor, so they questioned why she was elected as a senator.” He also mentioned another senator-elect in the province, who has experience as a village chief and health volunteer, yet faces similar scrutiny despite her practical skills and experience. Somsak’s comments come amid allegations that the BJT has influenced the Senate election process. These claims arose following observations that a notable number of senators-elect appeared to have affiliations with the BJT, which has a strong political presence in the northeast. Responding to these allegations, Deputy Government spokesperson and BJT member, Karom Polpornklang, challenged critics to provide concrete evidence to support their accusations. “Every candidate had to follow the Election Commission’s regulations. We must respect the outcome of the Senate election.” The BJT maintains that the Senate election process was fair and inclusive, designed to ensure that individuals from less privileged backgrounds had the same opportunities as those from more affluent families, reported Bangkok Post. In separate news, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s ongoing efforts to address national issues and promote Thailand have failed to win over the majority of voters, according to a survey by NIDA Poll. The poll, published on June 29, also highlighted a decline in the popularity of Pheu Thai Party leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra and a rise in support for the Move Forward Party (MFP).
