An ice delivery truck overturned and collided with a streetlight in Ratchaburi province, resulting in the deaths of three people. Police suspect the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel. Surveillance footage confirmed that no other vehicles were involved. Ritthipol Phonsen, an investigative officer at Thung Luang Police Station, received a report of a six-wheeled ice delivery truck that had overturned near the curve in front of Thung Luang Temple, Moo 2, Thung Luang Subdistrict. The incident was promptly reported to Naruedom Marasri, Deputy Commander of Ratchaburi Provincial Police, Nakhon Sriwilai, the district chief of Pak Tho, and Kobchok Lektrakool, the chief of Thung Luang Police Station. Along with a doctor from Pak Tho Hospital and rescue personnel from the Pathom Boromrajanusorn Ratchaburi Foundation, they rushed to the scene. A white Hino six-wheeled truck was found overturned and severely damaged by the roadside. Inside the wreckage were the bodies of Khomsan Kaewpuangmane, 39, the driver, and Lin Ni Thui, 20, a Myanmar national. Another male body, also a Myanmar national, was found but remains unidentified. Nearby, a streetlight was observed to have been struck and severed from its base. Preliminary investigations reveal that the three deceased were transporting ice from an ice factory in Huai Phai Subdistrict, Mueang District, to various stores in Thung Luang Subdistrict. It is suspected that the driver may have dozed off as the truck approached the curve, causing it to lose control and overturn. The vehicle then skidded into the streetlight, leading to the instant death of the driver and his assistants. Police reviewed nearby surveillance footage, which confirmed no other vehicles were involved. "The truck was on its regular delivery route when the accident happened. Given the circumstances, it appears the driver might have been fatigued, which led to this unfortunate event," an officer stated. Early this morning, Thai police announced the arrest of 29 individuals following a raid on a drug-fuelled party at a residence in Soi Ramkhamhaeng 21, Wang Thonglang, Bangkok. The operation led to the seizure of a significant cache of drugs, including one kilogram of methamphetamine, 130 ecstasy pills, and various other illicit substances. Authorities executed the raid at 6:30 AM on June 23, under a Criminal Court search warrant. Officers described the scene as wild and chaotic, with numerous used condoms littering the floor. Drug tests administered on-site revealed that 22 of those arrested had methamphetamine in their systems. All 22 tested individuals agreed to undergo drug treatment, signalling an interdisciplinary approach to the issue of substance abuse. In addition to these arrests, police detained four suspects directly involved in drug possession at the event. A key figure, identified only as Mr. Warawut, subsequently provided information that led to three more arrests related to drug trafficking in the Bangkok area. The comprehensive raid concluded with the confiscation of 1,081.19 grams of methamphetamine, 8 amphetamine pills, 10.84 grams of ketamine, 130 ecstasy pills, and 1.49 grams of heroin. While 22 individuals will be entering drug treatment programmes, seven others face severe legal repercussions, being charged with drug possession and distribution. This incident underscores the ongoing efforts by Thai authorities to crack down on illegal drug activities. It also aligns with recent legislative moves to impose stricter limits on narcotics possession, reflecting a broader national effort to combat drug-related crimes. Police have reiterated their commitment to continuing these stringent measures to ensure public safety and order. Thai Nationals Arrested in Taiwan Prostitution Crackdown Picture courtesy: FTV News via RTI Taipei police arrested eight Thai women and a Thai transwoman for illegal prostitution at a hotel in the Zhongshan district of Taipei City. This follows a similar raid last month. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1330707-thai-nationals-arrested-in-taiwan-prostitution-crackdown/ -
Taipei police arrested eight Thai women and a Thai transwoman for illegal prostitution at a hotel in the Zhongshan district of Taipei City. This follows a similar raid last month. In response to recent illegal activities, Taipei police intensified efforts following the arrest of 24 Thai women in Zhongshan on May 20. The latest raid occurred on June 19, targeting a suspected prostitution operation in a hotel, netting 12 foreigners, including nine Thai nationals – one of whom was a transwoman. All had entered Taiwan as tourists under the visa-free scheme. Authorities revealed that the Thai nationals were recruited by a transnational sex trafficking gang. The operation was short-term, and all detainees will soon face deportation after paying fines, along with a lifetime ban from Taiwan. Police are scrutinizing the hotel's ownership for potential involvement in the illegal activities. The proprietor faces charges related to labour and sexual conduct laws. Investigations are ongoing to dismantle the broader sex trafficking network behind these operations. Radio Taiwan International issued a cautionary advisory, emphasising that Taiwan does not offer agricultural or manufacturing jobs to foreigners without official collaboration. This aims to deter potential victims from falling prey to false job advertisements, particularly those linked to the sex industry. These arrests follow a pattern of ongoing issues. Last October, police in New Taipei City apprehended a 20-year-old Thai woman for running an illegal prostitution business, discovered through social media ads. While Taiwan continues its efforts against prostitution networks, these incidents highlight the persistent and evolving challenges posed by transnational trafficking. Taiwanese authorities remain vigilant, urging public awareness to thwart exploitation and illegal activities. Picture courtesy: Wikipedia Thailand has been ranked among the top 50 happiest countries in the World Happiness Report 2024, underscoring its considerable appeal as a destination particularly favoured by young people. This achievement highlights the country’s overall high levels of happiness, especially among those under 30. The annual World Happiness Report, orchestrated by the United Nations (UN), the University of Oxford, and research firm Gallup, used data from the Gallup World Poll conducted between 2021 and 2022. The report evaluates happiness based on six categories: GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption. In this latest report, Thailand secured the 45th spot out of 143 countries and regions. It stands as the second happiest country in Asia, trailing only Taiwan. Travel+Leisure magazine attributes Thailand’s ranking to its popular reputation as a travel destination and its welcoming atmosphere for international visitors. The country's visa-free measures and various visa options have made it particularly accessible for young foreigners wishing to experience Thai culture and lifestyle. The top 10 happiest countries include Lithuania, Israel, Serbia, Iceland, Denmark, Luxembourg, Finland, Romania, the Netherlands, and Czechia. Chai Watcharong, spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, remarked that Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin is highly attuned to the needs and lifestyles of the younger generation, particularly considering global changes. PM Srettha has prioritised policies that resonate with the youth, such as the Marriage Equality Bill, passed on June 18, making Thailand the first country in ASEAN and the third in Asia to approve such legislation. Chai stated that the ranking serves as evidence of the government’s effective leadership under PM Srettha. However, Thai netizens have voiced mixed reactions, highlighting challenges faced by local youth, such as job scarcity and drug addiction, suggesting that while Thailand may be welcoming for foreign youth, it has unresolved issues for its own young population. -- 2024-06-26 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Surachate 'Big Joke' Hakparn challenges Thai PM over dismissal Picture courtesy: Siam Rath Deputy Police Chief Surachate Hakparn, known as Big Joke, has issued an ultimatum to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. Deputy Police Chief Surachate Hakparn, known as Big Joke, has issued an ultimatum to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. Big Joke threatened to file a malfeasance complaint against the PM if the order temporarily dismissing him from the police force is not revoked. Big Joke has already appealed to the Police Virtue Protection Committee and petitioned the prime minister to review the contentious order. He hinted at legal action for what he sees as negligence if Srettha does not address the issue. The dismissal, initially issued in April by Deputy National Police Chief Kitrat Phanphet, was later deemed illegitimate by the Council of State. Kitrat had temporarily taken over as acting police chief to quell a feud within the police force. The Commission is set to review the dismissal order tomorrow, with Srettha expected to preside. Big Joke criticised Srettha's leadership, challenging the PM to resolve a conflict that threatens public confidence in the police. He also announced plans to file a malfeasance complaint against recently reinstated National Police Chief Torsak Sukvimol if the dismissal stands. Additionally, he aims to bring a complaint against Kitrat to the National Anti-Corruption Commission, alleging procedural lapses in his dismissal. In response, Kitrat insisted the dismissal was thoroughly reviewed and confirmed that Big Joke’s appeal is being examined. While dismissing rumours about succeeding as national police chief, he remained firm on the legitimacy of the original order. As this drama unfolds, the outcome of tomorrow’s Police Commission meeting and the proceedings of the Police Virtue Protection Committee will be crucial. These decisions will not only determine Big Joke’s future within the police force but could also significantly impact the public’s trust in law enforcement leadership. The nation watches closely as this high-stakes and high-profile conflict in Thailand’s upper law enforcement echelons reaches a critical juncture. Flight MH780, operated by Malaysia Airlines, declared an emergency code 7700, indicating a serious issue requiring immediate attention. Heavy rainfall is expected across Thailand today, with over 60% coverage in all regions, including Bangkok. The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) warned of potential flash floods and forest runoff due to the intense weather conditions. The TMD forecasted that the southwest monsoon covering the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand is relatively strong. This, combined with a monsoon trough passing through northern Thailand and upper Laos, leading to a low-pressure area over northern Vietnam, is causing significant rainfall in many areas of the country. Thailand will experience heavy to very heavy rainfall in several regions, particularly in the north, northeast, east, and western parts of the south. Residents in these areas are advised to be cautious of the dangers posed by heavy and accumulated rainfall, which could result in sudden flooding and flash floods, especially in foothill areas near waterways and lowland regions. A tragic motorcycle accident occurred in Nonthaburi yesterday, claiming the life of a 34-year-old man after a collision with a six-wheeled truck on Rattanathibet Road. Efforts to overtake led to a fatal mishap, crushing the motorcyclist's skull as per the incident details. The grim event unfolded around 1.10 p.m. and was promptly reported to Bang Sri Mueang Police Station. Responding officers coordinated with forensic experts and the Poh Teck Tung Foundation to investigate. The scene painted a heart-wrenching picture—an overturned Yamaha motorcycle and the lifeless body of Phuwadol Chanhom from Ratsadon, found face down with severe injuries including a crushed skull and broken limbs. CCTV footage illuminated the accident's harrowing moments. It depicted an 18-wheeler and a six-wheeled truck travelling side by side. Phuwadol, attempting to overtake, lost control, resulting in his fatal crash. Unfortunately, neither truck stopped post-accident. Following standard procedures, Phuwadol's body underwent a preliminary autopsy and was transported to the Institute of Forensic Science for further examination. In a related note, another accident occurred later in Chon Buri. At 10.36 p.m., a tour bus making a U-turn on Highway 36 collided with a motorcycle, leading to another fatality. Promptly arriving rescuers found the Yamaha sports bike wrecked and on fire, which they managed to extinguish. The tour bus sustained damage near its rear wheels. These sobering incidents underscore the hazards present on roads and the crucial need for careful driving and adherence to traffic norms to prevent such tragic losses.
