  2. The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) has called on the government to take immediate measures to aid manufacturers after the closure of 567 factories in the first five months of the year, reported Thai Rath on June 21. Speaking on the matter, FTI chairman Mr. Kriengkrai Thiennukul highlighted the urgency of implementing both short- and long-term strategies to buoy the struggling industrial sector. For the short term, he suggested actions such as mitigating the effects of the ongoing trade war that has seen foreign products biting into the local market share, preventing the dumping of goods, promoting Thai-made products, and lowering production costs, including expenses related to energy, transportation, and finance. In the medium-to-long term, Mr. Kriengkrai emphasised the need to promote technological innovation within Thai industries to boost productivity, restructure the sector, and reform laws and regulations to facilitate smoother business operations, particularly focusing on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) which are facing the brunt of the crisis. Mr. Nawa Chanthansurakon, FTI’s vice president, provided alarming numbers: 567 factories shut down, averaging 113 per month, resulting in 15,300 job losses. This trend, consistent with the previous year where 1,337 factories closed, raises concerns about an impending industrial recession. Most heavily affected are industries involved in plastics, metalwork, and wood processing. The primary cause cited is the trade war, which has led to a surge in cheaper Chinese imports as China redirects its export focus away from US and EU markets to ASEAN countries, including Thailand. Addressing this, Mr. Nawa advocated for the government to leverage tax measures to curb the import of low-cost goods and support local manufacturers by reducing raw material prices, energy costs, and logistics expenses, thereby enhancing their competitiveness. Ms. Nattaporn Triratsirikul from Kasikorn Research Centre noted that while Thai economic growth might improve in the latter half of the year, there's a risk of protectionist measures seeing an influx of Chinese products and hampering Thai export recovery, which could slow below expectations. Kasikorn Research Centre anticipates a 2.6% expansion for the Thai economy this year. Picture Courtesy: Thai Rath -- 2024-06-22 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Buriram Abbot Moved After Loudspeaker Outburst Amidst Funeral Stress Picture courtesy; Matichon A recent incident involving Phra Khru Sutthithamparahat, the 47-year-old abbot of Mueang Fai Temple in Nang Rong District, Buriram Province, has captivated local attention. 4. A recent incident involving Phra Khru Sutthithamparahat, the 47-year-old abbot of Mueang Fai Temple in Nang Rong District, Buriram Province, has captivated local attention. Just before dawn, at around 4am, the abbot unexpectedly activated the temple’s loudspeaker system and started shouting incoherently, causing concern among the residents. Many speculated that he might have been under the influence of a substance. The event quickly sparked lively online discussions, leading the Buriram Provincial Police Commander to order an immediate investigation. Officers from the Nang Rong Police Station responded by visiting the temple and requesting a urine test. However, this was not conducted due to objections from fellow monks and some villagers, who considered it inappropriate. Further investigation revealed a more complex background behind the abbot's unusual behaviour. It was disclosed that Phra Khru Sutthithamparahat was overwhelmed with stress while arranging the royal cremation ceremony for his late father, who had passed away just two days earlier. Phra Maha Phairot Rojana, a monk from Thai Chan Samakkhi Temple and a close friend, escorted the abbot to Thai Chan Samakkhi Temple to help him regain composure. Prasarn Khunnamwong, the headman of Moo 9, Ban Prasat in Mueang Fai Subdistrict, provided insight into the incident. He highlighted that the abbot is typically dedicated to his duties and known for his steady behaviour. The immense pressure to organise his father's funeral in a limited timeframe, combined with a lack of assistance, likely led to the outburst. Khunnamwong added, “The abbot has a naturally loud voice and is about to travel to the southern region. He probably used the loudspeaker to call fellow monks for a meeting, resulting in the unexpected commotion.” The community is now giving the abbot the space and support needed to recover from the stress and return to his duties. 6. A monk from a renowned temple in Chiang Mai was involved in a car accident yesterday, sparking an uproar about the appropriateness of monks driving vehicles. The incident occurred at 4.20 pm near the bypass intersection in San Sai District when his Honda Civic collided with a van, resulting in injuries to two people. Emergency services from Maekhu Subdistrict Municipality and police from Mae Faek Police Station responded to the scene. Upon arrival, they discovered the front of the Honda severely damaged. The monk, originating from a temple in Mae Taeng District, sat inside, covering his face with his saffron robe and suffering from chest pain. Emergency responders transported him to Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai for further treatment. The van carried a couple who suffered minor injuries. They were travelling to Phrao District to collect the husband’s mother, who required transportation to a hospital in Chiang Mai for treatment today. The quick response from rescue teams ensured that the elderly woman's treatment was not delayed, as they promptly arranged alternative transport to the hospital. Police have documented the accident scene and impounded both vehicles for further investigation. The incident has ignited conversations among locals, primarily focussing on the suitability of monks driving cars, given that it is generally seen as a violation of monk discipline. Traditionally, monks are expected to lead a simple life, devoid of luxuries, to maintain focus on spiritual practices. 8. In a startling turn of events, a buffalo's escape led to a road catastrophe in Chiang Mai's San Sai District last night, resulting in the animal’s death and injuries to four people. The incident unfolded shortly after midnight when the buffalo wandered onto a main road and was hit by a passing car, causing substantial damage to the vehicle. Emergency responders from the Mae Jo Municipality rescue unit and officers from Mae Jo Police Station were quick to the scene. They found a blue car with severe front-end damage, evidence of its collision with the large black buffalo. However, the drama didn't end there. Two motorcycles trailing the car failed to stop in time and also collided with the fallen buffalo. The initial car accident and subsequent motorcycle crashes led to injuries. Of the four injured, one was transported to San Sai Hospital, and two others were taken to Theppanya Hospital. The final injured person declined hospital treatment. Authorities are investigating the buffalo's origins, as its ownership remains unknown. Early findings indicate that the buffalo may have been tethered in a nearby alley before it escaped onto the road. Police officers meticulously documented the scene with photographs and statements from those involved, aiming to trace the buffalo’s owner for possible accountability. This incident underscores the critical need for effective animal control, highlighting the hazards that stray animals can introduce to road safety. In a similar but separate incident, a wild deer caused multiple accidents on Chaiyapruek Road, hit by cars three times in rapid succession. Police from Chaiyapruek Police Station attended the scene last night following multiple reports of the deer being struck and killed. Both incidents serve as a stark reminder of the unpredictable dangers that animals on roads pose to motorists, stressing the importance of vigilance and caution while driving. 9. Fugitive Politician Vatana Asavahame Wields Power from Exile Wattana Asavahame; File photo courtesy; Wikipedia Even at the age of 87 and living in exile, Vatana Asavahame, former deputy interior minister of Thailand, remains an influential figure in the country's political landscape. 10. Even at the age of 87 and living in exile, Vatana Asavahame, former deputy interior minister of Thailand, remains an influential figure in the country's political landscape. Known as the “Godfather of Pak Nam,” Vatana has demonstrated his enduring clout by orchestrating political moves from afar. Earlier this month, Vatana publicly supported Sunthorn Pansaengthong, former deputy agriculture and cooperatives minister, urging him to run for chief of the Samut Prakan Provincial Administrative Organization (PAO). This province, located next to Bangkok, has been a stronghold for the Asavahame family for decades. Currently, the PAO is headed by Nantida Kaewbuasai, who previously married Vatana’s late son, Chonsawat Asavahame. Nantida’s term ends in December, and Vatana has evidently decided that his long-time aide, Sunthorn, should take over the role. "Sunthorn has had my support since 1975," Vatana stated, "and he embodies the ideology of my political clan." Vatana's influence in Samut Prakan began in 1975 when he was first elected as an MP. Re-elected nine more times, he served in multiple cabinet positions including deputy industry minister and deputy interior minister. He also facilitated the political careers of his sons, Poonphol and Chonsawat. However, Vatana’s career saw a dramatic fall when he was implicated in the Klong Dan Wastewater Treatment Project scandal, which cost Thai taxpayers about 23 billion baht. In 2008, the Supreme Court sentenced him to 10 years in prison for abuse of power; Vatana fled the country before an arrest warrant could be issued. Later, in 2018, he was sentenced to an additional three years in jail for another corruption charge. Despite these legal woes, Vatana continues to exert his influence. A recent video posted by a Samut Prakan provincial councillor showed Vatana at a party, promoting Sunthorn’s election bid. The footage stirred rumours that he had returned to Thailand, but sources confirmed the event took place at Vatana's residence in Cambodia. This episode confirms that Vatana’s political legacy and clout remain potent, even as he resides in a neighbouring country. 12. Get ready for a new era in Thai political communication as Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin steps into the spotlight with his TV show "Talk with Srettha," airing this Saturday, June 22nd. This comes 10 months after he took office, marking yet another chapter in Thailand's long tradition of Prime Ministers hosting television programs to engage with the public. Srettha isn’t the first Thai leader to have his own show. This custom, originating with Thaksin Shinawatra in April 2001, has seen leaders use airwaves to inform citizens of their government's work, achievements, and future plans. Thaksin's 30-minute weekly program, “PM Thaksin Talks with the People," was designed to foster public understanding and support for government initiatives, especially during tumultuous times. Following Thaksin's ousting by a military coup in 2006, his successors continued the trend. General Surayud Chulalont created "Direct Line to Government House," and Samak Sundaravej followed with “Samak-Style Conversation." Each leader tailored their approach, with Abhisit Vejjajiva inviting guests on "Confidence in Thailand with PM Abhisit" and Yingluck Shinawatra launching “Yingluck’s Government Meets the People,” which featured interviews of the Prime Minister and her Cabinet members by media celebrities. Even General Prayut Chan-o-cha, who came to power via a military coup, embraced this tradition. His show, “Returning Happiness to the People,” later renamed “From Royal Wisdom to Sustainable Development,” aired every Friday, albeit with low viewership. Srettha’s show marks a slight departure from his predecessors’ weekly programs. It will air monthly, every third Saturday, with a 30-minute format. According to Prime Minister’s Office Minister Jiraporn Sindhuprai, the show will recap Srettha's key activities and inspect the government's progress both domestically and internationally. Mobile broadcasts are planned to provide real-time updates during the PM’s trips. Hosted initially by former government spokesman Teerat Ratanasevi, future episodes will see media personalities like news anchor Arisara Kamthorncharoen and presenter Puwanart Kunpalin take the helm. This new format hopes to engage Thai citizens from all walks of life, offering a transparent window into the government’s work and plans. Stay tuned this Saturday for the much-anticipated debut of "Talk with Srettha"! -- 2024-06-22 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe Srettha Thavisin. Picture courtesy: Wikimedia

  16. A major Thai car manufacturer in Laem Chabang Industrial Estate, Sri Racha, Chon Buri, has abruptly laid off all its subcontracted employees, causing significant distress among workers and triggering an outpouring of support online. The shock announcement came to light through a Facebook post in the A1 Job Hunting Eastern Hemaraj Pluak Daeng Bowin Amata City V.2 group, which read: “June 22 will be the last working day at Motors in Laem Chabang Industrial Estate. The company has announced the immediate dismissal of all subcontracted employees. Let’s show support for all affected workers. Stay strong, everyone.” This news swiftly gained traction, amassing numerous comments and reactions from netizens expressing their sympathy and support for the affected individuals. One commenter noted, “I’ve heard it’s not just Laem Chabang; they’re laying off in Siam as well. They just hired new people after New Year, and now they’re letting them go.” The sudden layoffs have sparked considerable concern, particularly as the company had seemed to be bolstering its workforce not long ago, following recent hires after the new year. This abrupt decision has led many to question the timing and motivations behind the move, speculating it could be linked to wider economic issues or shifts within the global automotive industry. In response to the viral post, many have rallied to offer words of encouragement. Comments such as “Stay strong, everyone. Better opportunities will come your way” and “It’s a tough time, but don’t lose hope. We’re all rooting for you” have been common. As of now, the company has yet to release an official statement or provide any reasoning for the mass layoffs, leaving the public and affected workers anxiously awaiting more information. 20. A British couple, Brian Pitts, 29, and Katie Harlow, 26, are poised to face lengthy prison terms for their roles in orchestrating a counterfeit Xanax operation from their luxury villa in Thailand. The duo allegedly ran a thriving drug empire, distributing fake Xanax pills across the dark web from makeshift labs in the West Midlands, UK. Relatives and friends were also implicated in this multimillion-pound scheme, which saw over £4 million (roughly 185 million baht) worth of counterfeit pills sold online. The bust followed a five-year investigation led by pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, which found the pills were dangerously mixed with other substances. UK Regional Organised Crime Units worked together to bring the gang down, leading to ten arrests, including Pitts and Harlow. Pitts admitted to conspiracy to supply class C drugs and trademark offences, while Harlow pled guilty to money laundering. Two other key gang members, Jordan Pitts, 25, and Bladen Roper, 24, were convicted on June 19 at Wolverhampton Crown Court for abetting the operation. Police reports revealed massive profits were made between 2018 and 2019, laundered through Bitcoin transactions. A 2019 raid uncovered a production site in a shed in Tipton, featuring an industrial powder mixer. Another site in Wolverhampton housed a tablet press and handwritten recipe lists. Detective Inspector Dave Hollies highlighted the scale of the operation, noting over two tonnes of bulking agents and 220 kilograms of active ingredients were purchased by the group. Evidence showed the counterfeit pills had a broad distribution range, reaching Europe and America. The gang faces charges of conspiracy to supply class C drugs, trademark offences, and money laundering. Sentencing is due soon, according to reports from Daily Mail UK. Xanax, a powerful tranquilizer for anxiety and panic disorders, isn't available on the NHS but can be prescribed privately in the UK. TOP: Brian Pitts (L) and Katie Harlow (R). 25. The online food delivery market in Thailand has surged, yet the challenging economy might force 50,000 to 100,000 small restaurants to close this year. With approximately 700,000 restaurants, including mobile street vendors, Thailand's total food business is valued at 800 billion baht. Online food delivery services account for 15% of this sum. Yod Chinsupakul, Chief Executive of Line Man Wongnai, reports a 10% growth in online food delivery over the past five months, with expectations of continued growth. Chinsupakul explains that food remains a necessity, less impacted by economic challenges, but notes a high turnover in the industry. About 50% of new food sellers close within their first year, with another 20-30% shutting down later. On the Line Man Wongnai platform, 50,000 to 100,000 restaurants typically close annually, and this year might see even higher numbers, particularly affecting small eateries. The company's chief executive estimates that only half of the restaurants on its platform have fully embraced digital technology. The online food delivery market in Thailand is valued at 100 billion baht. Business Solutions and Expansion Line Man Wongnai seeks growth in business-to-business (B2B) solutions, especially in payment, merchant management, and point-of-sale systems for restaurants. The company recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Business Development Department to support food businesses with technology and online transition assistance. Chinsupakul highlighted that successful food merchants using their platform have expanded to over 20 branches, utilising the company’s point-of-sale system and electronic menu. Deputy Commerce Minister Napintorn Srisunpang noted that Thailand has over 300,000 food operators, 90% of which are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Under the MoU, the ministry aims to digitally train up to 500 Thai SELECT-certified food operators for the Line Man Wongnai platform. This certification guarantees the authentic taste of Thai food products. Currently, 50,000 food operators have adopted the company's point-of-sale system, representing a potential market of 50% of all Thai restaurants. Line Man Wongnai plans to offer more financial services, potentially extending loans to merchants through partnerships such as with Line BK. Chinsupakul confirmed that Line Man Wongnai is progressing well in business performance and plans for an initial public offering by the third quarter of 2025.
