Thailand’s Aviation Ambitions Faced with Supply Chain Delays
webfact posted a topic in Thailand News
Thailand's ambitious plan to become a leading aviation hub in Asia by 2030 is hitting roadblocks, largely due to global supply chain disruptions, as highlighted by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s vision for Thailand to dominate the regional aviation sector by 2030—part of the “Ignite Thailand” initiative—faces significant challenges that may push this target back by several years. At IATA's annual meeting in Dubai, Director-General Willie Walsh acknowledged Thailand's potential but pointed out that the country needs extensive long-term investments, streamlined regulations, and an accelerated push toward digitalisation to enhance efficiency. A major stumbling block is the delay in acquiring new aircraft, particularly wide-body jets from key manufacturers like Airbus and Boeing. Walsh, former CEO of British Airways, noted that what used to be a four- to five-year wait for aircraft delivery has now grown considerably longer. “There’s a considerable wait to acquire new aircraft,” Walsh stated, referencing the current state of prolonged lead times for jets. IATA's data supports this claim, noting that 1,583 aircraft are slated for global delivery in 2024. However, delays in the supply chain are causing about 150 of these deliveries to be pushed into 2025, with the total number of delayed jets expected to reach 2,293 by then. Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA’s Senior Vice-President of Sustainability, underscored the elevated pressure on production lines to meet soaring demand. Meanwhile, IATA’s Regional Vice-President for North Asia and Asia-Pacific, Xie Xingquan, underscored regulatory challenges Thailand faces, mentioning that new consumer protection laws covering delays, cancellations, and passenger rights are in the works. Xingquan noted, “Government efforts and attractive incentives for airlines are crucial to achieving this hub status.” Currently, Thailand is working on automation to speed up immigration processes and mitigate delays, while also focusing on the safety aspects following recent incidents of severe air turbulence. In summary, while the vision is robust, achieving Thailand’s aviation hub dream by 2030 hinges on overcoming substantial logistical, regulatory, and investment-related hurdles. File photo. More than 80 patients escaped from a drug rehabilitation centre on Koh Sriboya, an island in the southern province of Krabi, over alleged abuses by the Thai authorities. A community leader on Sriboya Island reached out to officers from Khlong Kanan Police Station for assistance, as residents grew concerned about approximately 80 patients who had absconded from a drug rehabilitation centre and congregated at a pier to cross over to the mainland of Krabi. Around 30 police officers and officials from the administrative office promptly responded to the situation. Despite the authorities’ efforts to persuade the patients to return to the rehabilitation centre, they adamantly refused, expressing their desire to reunite with their families at home. One of the escapees told ThaiRath that he and others had to escape because they could no longer bear the abusive behaviour of the officers inside the centre. They were violently punished while some had even died inside the centre. According to the escapees, some patients who fully recovered from drug addiction were not allowed to return home because officers wanted them to help them with their work and take care of others. They could not find a solution to the issue and decided to run away. The Thai authorities dedicated over two hours to persuade the patients to go back to the rehabilitation centre but they remained resolute in their desire to return home. Consequently, everyone was escorted to the Khlong Kanan Police Station to await pickup by their families. It remains undisclosed whether authorities will proceed with further investigations regarding the allegations against the officers at the drug rehabilitation centre. In a related report, more than 200 teenagers escaped from the Klong Gom School’s drug rehabilitation centre in July of 2021. The escape occurred after one of them was beaten to death by an official at the centre. Some families that sent their relatives with drug addiction to rehabilitation centres have come forward to seek justice after their family members mysteriously died in the centres. Some former patients who left rehab centres have also revealed to the public the abusive treatment, lack of food, unhygienic accommodation, and other issues within the rehabilitation centres. by Petch Petpailin Source: The Thaiger 2024-06-10 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

The crackdown occurred yesterday when central investigation police searched a nightclub in Rangsit at around 1.15am, officers found a significant number of underage patrons inside. Upon checking identification, they discovered 65 individuals under the legal drinking age of 20. The owner, 28 year old Patipan Intharong admitted that the club only had a liquor license and no permit to operate as a nightclub. The Thai authorities confirmed that the establishment lacked necessary permits and was serving alcohol past legally allowed hours. Patipan faces charges for running a business for commercial purposes, including food and alcohol sales, and providing entertainment after midnight, which violates local laws. This incident led to the immediate reassignment of several high-ranking officers. The directive, issued by the Provincial Police Commander of Pathum Thani, Police Major General Yutthana Jonkhun aimed to ensure a thorough investigation of and maintain the integrity of the police force. The directive noted that to prevent damage to the government service and ensure a smooth investigation, officers have been removed from their current posts. Additionally, an investigation committee has been formed to probe the events leading up to the raid. This committee has been tasked with completing their report within 15 days. They will determine if any police officers were negligent or violated disciplinary codes. This swift action underscores the Thai police force’s commitment to upholding the law and ensuring all establishments operate within legal parameters, especially those near educational institutions. Thailand’s food safety protocols are on the rise following successful efforts to ban harmful herbicides and pesticides such as paraquat and chlorpyrifos, alongside triumphant attempts to limit glyphosate use, as discussed at a recent seminar. A recent seminar titled A Decade for Driving to Food Safety highlighted that fewer individuals are now receiving treatment for symptoms related to the use and misuse of these chemicals. The coordinator of the Thai Pesticide Alert Network (Thai-Pan), Prokchon Usap noted that significant progress was made when the government intervened, resulting in a reduction of agrochemical imports from 128 million kilogrammes in 2017 to 113 million kilogrammes in 2022. The number of patients with conditions linked to agrochemical use also dropped, from 22.75 cases per 100,000 people in 2017 to 8.72 per 100,000 people in 2023. In 2019, the Department of Medical Sciences reported that 26.6% of research samples were contaminated with hazardous chemicals, said Prokchon. “However, zero contamination was detected in samples after the ban.” Thai-Pan expects public health expenditure related to agrichemical-induced diseases to decrease by over 48 billion baht (US$1.3 billion) in the forthcoming years. Prokchon added that Thai-Pan monitored the usage of four types of agrochemicals, carbonate, organophosphate, organochlorine, and pyrethroids in exported fruits and vegetables from 2012 to 2022. Their findings showed that contamination levels had decreased from 50% to 20%. Thai-Pan and its partners plan to work towards a total ban of these four agrichemicals. Prokchon further commends the increased lab capacity which now allows for testing on a larger scale, with facilities to test for around 500 chemicals. “We are happy with the country’s effort to elevate food safety standards, as less chemical contamination is being found in samples of fruit and vegetables. While 60% were tainted in 2016, that number had dropped to 51% in 2022. “It proves we are now on the right track to dealing with the chemical at its source.” Thai-Pan and its partners agreed that cooperation from all stakeholders is key to creating a nationwide movement towards achieving food safety, with the prospect of even less agrochemical use by farmers in the future, reported Bangkok Post. by Ryan Turner Image courtesy of prostooleh on Freepik Full story: The Thaiger 2024-06-10 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

A tragic incident unfolded yesterday in Nong Bua Lamphu, where an argument over noise and disruptive behaviour ended in the fatal shooting of a teenager. The incident occurred at a small house in Hua Na District, where a man fired bullets into a room after repeated disturbances from his grandson and friends. Police received the call at around 9pm, where the 62 year old gunman, Buarian, awaited the police with the weapon in hand, and confessed to firing five shots into the room with a 9mm STI GP 6 automatic pistol. He claimed he was frustrated by his grandson’s constant gatherings, noise, and disruptive behaviour, which included drinking kratom water and playing loud music daily. Upon investigation, authorities discovered that one of the grandson’s friends had died from a gunshot wound inside the room. The room’s walls, made of tile, had five bullet holes, and a large pool of blood was found near the victim’s body. The forensic team found five 9mm bullet casings, but no bullets were retrieved, suggesting they might have exited through the window. Witnesses reported that the incident erupted after Buarian’s attempts to get his grandson and his friends to open the door failed. His wife recounted that Buarian was already upset due to his grandson’s refusal to attend school, despite having paid for all necessary expenses. His frustration peaked when he returned home to find the disruptive behaviour continuing. After repeatedly knocking and being ignored, he threatened to shoot if the door was not opened. When his threats were not heeded, he retrieved his gun and fired. Neighbours and relatives of the deceased expressed their outrage, condemning Buarian’s actions as heartless and cruel. The scene was chaotic with many locals gathering despite the late hour, and police had to intervene to maintain order. Buarian explained his actions to the police, stating that he did not intend to kill anyone but was overwhelmed by his anger and disappointment in his grandson, Ae (alias). Ae’s parents had separated when he was an infant, and he had been raised by Buarian and his wife after his mother moved to work in South Korea. Buarian admitted the gun belonged to his son, a soldier, and he had used it impulsively without knowing who was behind the door. He was charged with manslaughter and taken into custody for further investigation, reported Khaosod. by Ryan Turner Image courtesy of Khaosod Source: The Thaiger 2024-06-10 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

A police sergeant confessed to fatally shooting a Burmese man at Khon Kaen Hospital in Isaan on June 6. He accused the deceased of bothering his father, who was a patient in the bed next to the victim. The deceased, 29 year old Kyaw Swar Aong, was shot dead in his hospital bed at around 11pm on June 6. His Thai girlfriend suspected the fatal shooting stemmed from a 12,000 baht debt borrowed from Kyaw Swar Aong’s colleague. Officers from Mueang Khon Kaen Police Station visited Kyaw Swar Aong’s workplace to meet his mentioned colleague but the man was not present at the location. Subsequently, officers reviewed security camera footage and identified a suspicious man who had impersonated the victim’s friend. This individual had inquired about the victim’s whereabouts at the hospital counter prior to the shooting. Regrettably, the perpetrator was not the debtor as suspected by the victim’s girlfriend, but rather Police Sergeant Weeraphong Buayen. Witnesses to the incident also confirmed to the officers that Weeraphong was indeed the gunman. As police officers gather evidence and prepare to issue an arrest warrant, Weeraphong’s mother, having seen a picture of her son on social media, persuaded him to surrender himself yesterday, June 9. Weeraphong claimed he first met the victim in a male ward on the fifth floor of building number 5 before the victim was moved to a male ward on the fifth floor of building number 6, where the shooting took place. According to Weeraphong, Kyaw Swar Aong was in the hospital bed next to his father in building number 5. The father told Weeraphong that Kyaw Swar Aong bothered him constantly, preventing him from sleeping. Weeraphong stated that Kyaw Swar Aong appeared to be a troublemaker and that he disliked him from their first meeting. Weeraphong admitted to shooting the Burmese man but did not know why he decided to kill him. Thai Post reported that Weeraphong served at Pra Yuen Police Station in Khon Kaen province. He suffers from depression and was stressed and panicked during questioning, refusing to reenact the crime at the hospital. He reportedly receives regular treatment for his depression and takes medication consistently. Weeraphong is facing two charges including: Section 288 of the Criminal Law: intentional murder. The penalty is the death penalty, life imprisonment or imprisonment from 15 to 20 years. Section 7 of the Act on Firearms, Ammunition, Explosive, Fireworks, and Imitation Firearm: possessing a gun without permission. The punishment will be imprisonment for up to 10 years, a fine of up to 20,000 baht, or both. ORIGINAL STORY: Deadly debt dispute: Burmese man shot at Khon Kaen hospital A gunman shot dead a Burmese man last night while the victim was receiving treatment and awaiting surgery at Khon Kaen Hospital in Isaan. The suspected motive behind the murder is believed to be related to debt. The fatal shooting occurred in a male ward on the fifth floor of a building at Khon Kaen Hospital around 11pm last night, June 6. The Burmese deceased, 29 year old, Kyaw Swar Aong, was shot in the back of his neck. Medical workers tried to save his life but were unsuccessful. The victim’s Thai girlfriend told Channel 7 that her boyfriend was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday, June 5, due to a tumour on his back. He was waiting for surgery to remove the tumour today, June 7. She was at the hospital caring for him until the shooting took place. The girlfriend maintained that she was unaware of the motive behind the shooting. She stressed that jealousy or extramarital affairs were not factors, citing their four-year relationship without any disagreements on such issues. Additionally, the girlfriend revealed that her boyfriend had never been involved in conflicts with friends or colleagues. However, she noted that he had borrowed 12,000 baht from a colleague in the past, suggesting that debt might be the motive for the murder. Mueang Khon Kaen Police Station Superintendent Yotsawat Karesuebthayanich reported that the gunman pretended to be Kyaw Swar Aong’s relative and asked medical workers about the victim’s location, claiming he wanted to visit. According to Yotsawat, officers went to Kyaw Swar Aong’s workplace to meet his colleague from whom he had borrowed money but the person was not present. Officers are now searching for this person, believing he may be involved in the murder. In a related report, another shooting occurred at Cha-am Hospital in the southern province of Phetchaburi in April. In this case, police officers shot and injured a Thai man after he brought drugs and a weapon into the hospital and began causing chaos. by Petch Petpailin Photo via Thai Post Full story: The Thaiger 2024-06-10 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

A factory shuttle bus encountered a catastrophic left front tyre explosion near the Ayutthaya Interchange yesterday evening, leading to injuries for 16 individuals. The incident, occurring around 6:30 pm, caused the vehicle to veer off the road and overturn. Deputy Inspector Wutthiphat Chuaykhit of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Police Station filed the initial report. Here are the only legal methods foreigners can own land in Thailand By Online Reporter If you have lived in Thailand for any length of time, you’ve probably heard all manner of schemes or ways in which it is claimed that foreigners can own land in Thailand. But Thai law restricts land ownership to Thai nationals, with few exceptions. Sometimes, in order to circumvent these restrictions, foreigners often use nominee companies. A Thai majority shareholder is on record, while the foreigner holds minority shares but retains control through various agreements. However, this is illegal and there’s a crackdown on such currently being carried out by the authorities in Thailand. Picture courtesy: China Press A five-year-old girl from Ban Phue District, Udon Thani Province, suffered serious head injuries following an attack by a mixed-breed dog late yesterday afternoon. The dog, a cross between a Pit Bull and a local Thai dog, bit the girl outside her residence, leading to immediate medical attention at Ban Phue Hospital for deep wounds to her head and near her left eye. Somlith, the girl’s 48-year-old grandmother, recounted that the incident happened in a common area in front of their house, inhabited mainly by relatives. After picking her granddaughter up from school, she allowed the children to play together. As the children were unwell and didn’t attend school, they spent the afternoon playing outside. In the evening, a relative brought her two-year-old son to join the play, unwittingly triggering the attack. "The dog suddenly jumped and bit my granddaughter's head," Somlith explained. "The relative quickly put down her child and rushed to protect my granddaughter from further bites. Everyone worked to chase the dog away, but the sight of the wounds was shocking." The dog, named Tang, belongs to a family relative who insisted it had never shown aggression before. "Tang has always been friendly, even with strangers delivering goods," the owner said, speaking on condition of anonymity. "On the day of the incident, I was at home. My mother took my son to play with his cousins at their house. Tang likely became protective of my son." Somlith described the immediate response to the attack. Blood soaked through the child’s clothes, prompting an emergency services call. The relative responsible for Tang vowed to cover all medical expenses. "My mother was devastated and cried almost the entire night. We are deeply saddened by the injury to our niece. This morning, I visited her and assured the family we would cover all medical costs," stated Tang’s owner. The family has decided to keep Tang but will chain him to prevent any future incidents. This decision comes after consulting with relatives to avoid further complications. -- 2024-06-10 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe
