File photo//(AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit) Speaking to reporters, the Prime Minister expressed his enthusiasm for the tournament, which will see 24 national teams compete across 10 German stadiums from June 14 to July 14. Among these teams, England, despite never having won the championship since its inception in 1960, is one of the prime contenders. Historically, Germany and Spain lead with three UEFA Euro victories each, followed closely by France and Italy with two wins apiece. England, however, has consistently fallen short, making this declaration of support particularly intriguing. Prime Minister Srettha didn’t shy away from naming other strong contenders. “France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and hosts Germany are also among the favourites,” he remarked, acknowledging the stiff competition that lies ahead. The tournament promises an exciting lineup, including teams such as Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, the Netherlands, and other nations like Albania, Austria, Czech Republic, and Scotland, to name a few. Each brings its own unique flair and talent, making for a highly anticipated event. In a move to boost viewership and national morale, Prime Minister Srettha confirmed that every match of Euro 2024 will be broadcast live and free across Thailand on state-run TV Channels 9 and 11. The broadcasting rights, acquired by Summit Footwear Co., were secured for an undisclosed sum, ensuring that football fans across the nation can enjoy the matches. The Prime Minister’s endorsement of England adds a personal touch to the international event, giving Thai football fans an intriguing choice of team to follow. With the tournament just weeks away, excitement is steadily building, and all eyes will soon turn to Germany for what promises to be a memorable UEFA Euro 2024. Thai football fans are in for a treat as it was announced today that they will be able to watch all matches of the UEFA Euro 2024 championship live from June 14 to July 14. A consortium of private companies has successfully secured the broadcast rights, ensuring fans won't miss a second of the action. Speaking at Government House, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin expressed his gratitude towards the companies involved. He highlighted that this arrangement was entirely facilitated by the private sector, with the government not having to spend any taxpayer money. The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to remind fans to enjoy the matches responsibly and to refrain from gambling during the tournament. An avid Liverpool supporter himself, Srettha mentioned he would be rooting for the English team. The consortium behind this initiative includes Summit Footwear Company, PTT Public Company, and Airports of Thailand Public Company. Picture courtesy: Khaosod Immigration Bureau officers have detained an Australian man in Pattaya amid allegations of involvement in his home country's crimes and mafia gang connections in Thailand. The man, identified only as Grey, was apprehended at his luxury residence following suspicions linking him to a foreign mafia group operating in Phuket. Details about the gang remain scarce. The breakthrough in Grey's case was publicly disclosed during a press conference on 5th June. His arrest stems from previous events involving a British man who sparked an investigation in November last year after a mishap with a gun at a Phuket nightclub. The British suspect, who accidentally dropped a firearm in front of the venue, triggered a security alert that led to police intervention. On police arrival, he and his associates fled but were later captured. This British individual had a lengthy criminal record and past imprisonment in the UK for various offences. Picture courtesy: Siam Rath Grey managed to evade immediate capture following some gang members' exodus from Thailand post-British suspect's arrest. Continuous probes into his activities revealed multiple drug charges pending against him in Australia. Grey moved from Phuket to Pattaya, believing he might elude the intensified scrutiny but was ultimately caught by authorities. Parallel incidents include another Australian man's arrest in Phuket in March for overstaying his visa and attempting to dodge a hospital bill following a motorcycle accident. Moreover, another Australian was detained the same month for stealing a motorcycle from a Koh Samui rental shop and travelling with it to Koh Pha Ngan. These arrests highlight the ongoing efforts of Thai authorities to clamp down on foreign criminals exploiting the country as a hideout. -- 2024-06-07 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

A Thai taxi driver proved that not all of the capital’s cabbies are crooks when he returned 80,000 baht in cash, along with personal belongings, to a Maldivian man who left them behind while travelling from Banthat Thong Road to Pradipat Road in Bangkok. The Maldivian man, Ali Hafeez, left his backpack in an orange taxi while travelling from Banthat Thong Road to a spare parts store on Pradipat Road on June 4. Hafeez sought help from another taxi driver, Siroj Chaisirin, who had previously given Hafeez his contact information. Siroj accompanied Hafeez to a police station to file a report and then to Phithak Santirat Radio Station to broadcast a message about the lost bag on a popular channel for taxi drivers. While officers were checking security footage to identify the orange taxi, the driver, Suphat Suraphon, arrived at the radio station to return the lost backpack and its contents. Everything in the backpack was untouched including a phone charger, shorts, a passport, 28,658 baht in Thai cash, US$1,294 (47,300 baht), 1,690 Maldivian Rufiyaa (3,070 baht), and 2,840 Sri Lanka Rupee (346 baht). The total value of the cash was nearly 80,000 baht. Suphat explained that Hafeez and two friends had taken his taxi on that day. After dropping them off, his car window accidentally broke, causing him to rush to a garage for repairs. While clearing the car, he found the backpack and its contents. Despite being surprised by the amount of money, Suphat was determined to return it. He said he found lost items multiple times before and always returned them to their rightful owners. He expressed his hope that other taxi drivers would do the same. In an interview with Channel 7, Hafeez revealed that he frequently visits Thailand for business, leisure, and shopping. He said Thai products were of good quality and affordable, and Thai food was delicious. Hafeez also thanked Siroj for his assistance in recovering his bag. He was very grateful to have his valuables returned. by Petch Petpailin Photo via Facebook/ ไจตนย์ : jaitana channel Full story: The Thaiger 2024-06-06 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe -

Thai PM Eyes Revenue Boost for Fourth Quarter Picture courtesy: Khaosod Thailand’s government is actively exploring strategies to enhance state revenue, as Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin expresses optimism about the economic outlook for the fourth quarter. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1329105-thai-pm-eyes-revenue-boost-for-fourth-quarter/ -
Thailand’s government is actively exploring strategies to enhance state revenue, as Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin expresses optimism about the economic outlook for the fourth quarter. The Bangkok-born PM convened a crucial meeting yesterday with Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat, and key figures from revenue collection agencies including the Excise Department, Customs Department, and Revenue Department. Their main agenda was the discussion of measures to boost revenue. Srettha, aged 62, underscored the need to review plans for cutting expenses and increasing income to ensure effective budget management. Alongside this, he mentioned that the Finance Ministry is also considering additional economic stimulus measures. “Revenue collection is an important matter,” Srettha noted, highlighting the collaborative effort to revitalise the economy amidst sluggish GDP growth. The Thai PM expressed confidence in a positive economic outlook for the fourth quarter, though immediate attention is being focused on improving growth in the third quarter. “The budget has now been disbursed, and we will discuss ways to ensure it is spent as quickly as possible,” he confirmed. The National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) reported a 1.5% year-on-year growth for the first quarter, which was mildly encouraging though not without its challenges. The NESDC now projects GDP growth between 2% and 3% for the year, a slight downgrade from the previous forecast of 2.2% to 3.2%. Last year saw a growth rate of 1.9%. Finance Ministry spokesperson, Pornchai Thiraveja, revealed that the government collected 1.38 trillion baht in revenue from October last year to April, missing the target by 2.7% or 39.1 billion baht. The Excise Department’s revenue came in at 304.5 billion baht, about 47 billion baht, or 13.4% below target. However, this was 27.5 billion baht higher than the same period last year. Deputy Finance Minister Julapun explained that a significant part of the shortfall stemmed from measures to alleviate high living costs, including a substantial cut in fuel tax, which slashed the Excise Department’s income by roughly 20 billion baht per month. Following the discussion, Finance Permanent Secretary Lavaron Sangsnit indicated that measures are in place to address the revenue shortfall, with plans to collect an additional 10 billion baht, though specifics were not provided. In sum, Srettha’s administration remains committed to economic improvement and stability, with strategic efforts directed at boosting revenue and managing spending effectively. Thai Tourism Revenue to Hit 3 Trillion Baht, Falls Short of Goal Picture courtesy: What's on Sukhumvit Thailand’s tourism industry expects to generate 3 trillion baht this year but will miss its 3.5 trillion baht target, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). Picture courtesy: What's on Sukhumvit Thailand’s tourism industry expects to generate 3 trillion baht this year but will miss its 3.5 trillion baht target, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). The shortfall is attributed to economic hurdles in key markets, primarily China. As of today, Thailand has welcomed 14.9 million foreign visitors, bringing in 709 billion baht (US$19.4 billion). This revenue accounts for roughly 30% of the international income goal of 2.38 trillion baht (US$65 billion) set by the government. Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhya, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing, noted the realistic revenue estimate stands at 3 trillion baht (US$82 billion). Challenges include economic slowdown in critical markets like China, where flight capacity to Thailand is still only 75% of pre-pandemic levels. Kunjara stressed the need for additional financial stimuli, especially for boosting tourism from China. "To reach the extra 500 billion baht (US$13.7 billion), we need more investment, particularly in the Chinese market," he stated at the Thailand Travel Mart Plus (TTM+) 2024 event in Phang Nga. The original revenue goal included 980 billion baht (US$27 billion) from Asian and South Pacific markets. If the total revenue hits 3 trillion baht (US$82 billion), these markets would likely contribute 840 billion baht (US$23 billion). Chuwit Sirivejkul, TAT's Regional Director of Marketing for East Asia, emphasised ongoing events to maintain market momentum, particularly during the low season. He observed a slowdown in Chinese tourist arrivals due to university entrance exams but expects an uptick from July. TAT will organise events, including the launch of a special-edition Labubu doll in collaboration with China. This Labubu doll marks 50 years of diplomatic relations with China, aiming to attract its large fan base and promote Thai attractions. Complementary travel packages will be offered by platforms like Trip.com and Tongcheng Travel. In July, TAT plans roadshows in Chinese cities Changsha, Xi’an, and Zhengzhou. Chattan announced that 79 Chinese agents have registered for TTM+, the highest number among the 425 international buyers from 50 countries. Business deals during the event are expected to generate 3 billion baht (US$82 million). Chiang Mai is set to host the event in 2025. -- 2024-06-06 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Yesterday, Thai authorities successfully executed a sting operation in the Bueng Kan province, foiling an illegal wildlife trafficking scheme involving a valuable tiger cub. The would-be sellers sought a substantial profit of 300,000 baht, equivalent to roughly US$8,200. The effort was spearheaded by Police Major General Watcharin Poosit, Commander of the Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Suppression Division (NED). The operation led to the detention of a 34-year-old Vietnamese man named Ho The Luc, along with his 42-year-old Thai accomplice, Sawitree. This crackdown was the result of intelligence shared by the Wildlife Justice Commission (WJC), which linked Ho to a wider network of international wildlife traffickers operating across Laos, Vietnam, and Myanmar. Reports indicated that Ho was conducting wildlife sales, including that of the tiger cub, via clandestine online platforms while allegedly hiding in Laos. The authorities devised a careful plan to intercept the illegal transaction, resulting in the suspects' capture in Bueng Kan. The sting operation unfolded as the suspects handed a tiger cub in a plastic basket to an undercover agent at a pre-arranged meet-up. The officer revealed his identity, leading to the immediate seizure of the cub and two mobile phones. During interrogation, Ho confessed to masterminding the sale, claiming the tiger cub originated from a breeding facility in Vietnam. Conversely, Sawitree denied knowledge of participating in wildlife trafficking, alleging ignorance about the crate's contents, which she said was given to her by a Laotian acquaintance named Ton for delivery. Authorities found these denials questionable, uncovering both suspects' monetary motives in the transaction. They were subsequently handed over to NED investigators and charged with joint possession of protected wildlife without proper authorisation. Tigers are safeguarded under the 2019 Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act and are listed as a controlled species under Appendix I of the CITES agreement. Trafficking in tigers carries severe penalties, including up to 10 years imprisonment, fines up to 1 million baht, or both. Police Crackdown at Sisaket Railway Market Nets Illegal Immigrants Picture courtesy: Khaosod Police in Sisaket have ramped up their efforts to address illegal immigration, specifically targeting the bustling railway market area. Police in Sisaket have ramped up their efforts to address illegal immigration, specifically targeting the bustling railway market area. This heightened surveillance is designed to ensure the safety of both locals and tourists. In a recent swoop, law enforcement nabbed Thonglueng Chuyad, a 31-year-old resident of Mueang Phon Thong in Champasak, Laos. She was detained on charges of entering and staying in Thailand without the necessary documentation. This arrest forms part of a broader initiative by local authorities to boost security and rigorously monitor foreign nationals within the region. This crackdown follows directives from Piya-anant Tosakulwong, Commissioner of Immigration Division 4, and Manuwat Kosanan, Deputy Commissioner. The operation was led by Jiraprapa Suthaprida, Superintendent of Immigration in Sisaket, alongside deputies Natee Thongsukkaew and Chanya Promwaree. Thonglueng's detention was announced by Maneeporn Boonliang, an inspector at the Sisaket Immigration Office. She was supported by the investigative and anti-human trafficking teams from the Department of Employment in Sisaket. The inspection at the railway market on Rajakarn Rotfai 3 Road in Mueang Tai Subdistrict was part of a larger policy to intensify checks on foreign nationals living in the kingdom. When questioned, Thonglueng admitted her origins from Champasak, Laos, but failed to produce a passport or any travel documents when requested by officers. Consequently, she was charged with being a foreigner entering and residing in Thailand without permission and informed of her legal rights. She will undergo the appropriate legal proceedings according to Thai law. Jiraprapa stressed that this arrest is in line with the immigration office’s policy of cooperating with local security agencies to enhance the screening of foreign nationals. The ultimate aim is to protect the community and prevent incidents that could jeopardise the well-being of both locals and tourists. Pattaya City Mayor Mr. Poramase Ngampiches is taking drastic action against the contractor of a delayed road resurfacing project on Sukhumvit Road by fining them over 100,000 baht per day until the work is done. According to reports given to The Pattaya News, the project, which began in April 2023, has fallen significantly behind the February 2024 deadline. It has also been causing frustration and impacting traffic flow on Sukhumvit Road. This frustration has certainly been felt on our own social media platforms with numerous comments from both Thai nationals and foreign expats complaining about what seems like neverending construction everywhere in Pattaya. This particular project involves resurfacing four key intersections on Sukhumvit Road, including Chaiyapruek Intersection, Wat Boon Kanjanaram Intersection, Motorway Intersection, and North Pattaya Intersection. The city decided to initiate the repairs due to heavy traffic that had worn down the road surfaces. Despite previous confirmation from Pattaya City officials that the project would be expedited and completed by June 2nd, 2024, recent reports indicated that the work is still ongoing at some intersections, with the repaving yet to be completed and especially on weekends and holidays Sukhumvit turning into a car park as a result.
