The Karon Municipality in Phuket has put to rest concerns raised by locals over an incident involving a 67 year old monk, Phra Manop Nonthakho, who was believed to have stripped naked at Karon Beach. A representative of the municipality, Adisak Phromsila, clarified that the monk originally from Nakhon Sawan province had not fully disrobed but kept on his half-length robe while taking a dip in the sea. The incident, which was reported to the Karon Police by concerned citizens at 2.20pm on Friday, sparked a swift response from officers, who promptly questioned Phra Manop about his actions. The 67 year old monk, who had travelled to Phuket from Phattalung province, explained that he had taken to the water to alleviate itchiness caused by a skin condition. A video posted online later provided evidence supporting Phra Manop’s explanation, showing him in the water with his half-length robe on. Having cleared up the misunderstanding at Karon Beach, the monk continued his journey northwards to Patong. He shared that his next destination would be a temple in Thalang District, although he was unsure of the specific temple at which he would be staying. Phra Manop’s actions, while unusual, were not in violation of any laws or religious norms. His decision to enter the sea in his half-length robe might be seen as unconventional, but it was driven by a genuine need for relief from a skin condition. This incident serves as a reminder that even religious figures, while expected to adhere to certain standards and norms, are also humans with their own unique needs and circumstances. In related news, explicit surfboard sex video off Karon Beach sparks heated debate. A widely shared video of two foreigners engaging in sexual activity on a surfboard off Karon Beach in Phuket has sparked intense debate online. The footage, which was shared on the Facebook page of Hot Jung Phuket, has already received over 13,000 reactions and almost 2,000 comments since it was posted yesterday evening. by Mitch Connor TOP PHOTO VIA:ROMAN ODINTSOV FROM:Pexels.com Source: The Thaiger 2024-04-09 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

AFTER Karen National Union (KNU) and People’s Defence Force (PDF) fighters yesterday (Apr. 7) captured Myawaddy town, just across the border from Thailand’s Mae Sot town, Myanmar authorities used a chartered plane to fly things, believed to be cash, plus officials from Mae Sot airport to Yangon with Thai government’s permission , Thai Rath and Matichon newspapers said today. KNU and PDF forces had first seized the tactical headquarters of the Myanmar junta in Myawaddy before invading Battalion 275 base, the largest one in the border town, after which anti-junta troops were in control of the entire Myawaddy district. Most of Myanmar’s overland trade with Thailand passes through Myawaddy. This fall of the border town led to officials, such as customs and immigration and those attached to other agencies, withdrawing and evacuating to Kawkareik town which is still under the junta’s control. by TNR Staff TOP: The chartered flight that landed at Mae Sot airport last night and the pick-up truck believed to be carrying cash next to it. Phuket reservoirs assure sufficient water supply until annual rains by Mitch Connor PHOTO VIA:Stanislav Rozhkov FROM:Unsplash.com Phuket’s main reservoirs, namely Bang Wad Reservoir, Bang Neow Dum Reservoir, and Klong Kata Reservoir, currently hold sufficient water supplies to service residents and tourist accommodations until the anticipated annual rains arrive next month, according to Phuket officials. Phuket’s main reservoirs, namely Bang Wad Reservoir, Bang Neow Dum Reservoir, and Klong Kata Reservoir, currently hold sufficient water supplies to service residents and tourist accommodations until the anticipated annual rains arrive next month, according to Phuket officials. This assurance comes from the head of the Phuket Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office (DDPM-Phuket), Sophon Thongsai, following his inspection of the reservoirs yesterday, April 7. At present, the Bang Wad Reservoir in Kathu is filled to 25.1% of its capacity, holding around 2.56 million cubic metres of water. The Bang Neow Dum Reservoir in Srisoonthorn is at 49.5% capacity with 3.85 million cubic metres of water, while the Klong Kata Reservoir in Chalong is 36% full, housing 1.49 million cubic metres of water. Despite these numbers, the official report disclosed that the combined water supply reserves across the three reservoirs are standing at approximately 22%. A dedicated team of officials is currently monitoring the drought situation in Phuket. They have established a water coordination and management centre to oversee operations throughout the dry season and released a report to relay their findings. “The water coordination and management centre coordinates care, helps and facilitates the provision of water to be sufficient for water use, including procurement of groundwater from private mines to serve as a reserve water source to support the drought situation from the lack of rain that is expected to last until mid-May.” The report also highlighted the pressing need for residents to use water wisely and appreciate its value during the dry season. We still emphasise and ask for cooperation from people to use water economically and know its value as much as possible so we have water to use throughout the dry season. Earlier last week, a meeting of the Phuket Provincial Drought Situation Monitoring Working Group, chaired by Phuket Vice Governor, Sattha Thongkam, took place. The vice governor revealed that the Phuket Provincial Natural Resources and Environment Office (MNRE Phuket) had identified 2,573 ponds that could be leveraged to bolster the water supply. These include 1,291 ponds in Mueang District, 521 ponds in Kathu District, and 761 ponds in Thalang District. It is expected that rain will fall in mid-May, but we still ask for cooperation from the people to use water sparingly, as mentioned by Sattha, underscoring the need for conservative water usage amidst the ongoing dry season. by Mitch Connor PHOTO VIA:Stanislav Rozhkov FROM:Unsplash.com Source: The Thaiger 2024-04-08 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Search continues for 5,000 tonnes of missing cadmium slag Officials from the Industrial Works Department and police from the Natural Resources and Environment Crime Division are trying to locate about 5,000 tonnes of cadmium slag, which remain unaccounted for. Officials from the Industrial Works Department and police from the Natural Resources and Environment Crime Division are trying to locate about 5,000 tonnes of cadmium slag, which remain unaccounted for. 13,832 tonnes of slag were illegally moved from a landfill in Tak province to Samut Sakhon last August, and stored in warehouses in Bang Nam Jerd and Khlong Kio sub-districts in Chon Buri, reportedly awaiting smelting. 8,474 tonnes have, so far, been recovered and impounded, while waiting to be sent back to Tak province. The owner of the warehouses in Samut Sakhon, a Taiwanese businessman, claimed that he did not own the cadmium slag, but simply took delivery of cadmium and zinc slag for safe keeping, on behalf of a company in Samut Sakhon, not knowing whether the materials were toxic. According to Samut Sakhon Governor Phol Damtham, provincial health officials took urine samples last Thursday from 11 workers at warehouses where cadmium slag was being stored. Lab tests show eight of them have high levels of cadmium in their bodies, although none of them have developed any symptoms. All are now being treated at the provincial hospital. A tragic car accident occurred yesterday in the Sri Racha district of Chon Buri province, claiming the life of a motorcyclist and leaving two others severely injured. The incident took place at the Nong Yai Bu intersection when a car, running a red light, collided forcefully with two motorcycles. The deceased, Anurak, whose last name has been withheld for privacy, was 49 years old and riding a Honda Wave motorcycle. The force of the collision was so severe that his motorcycle was completely wrecked and he suffered fatal injuries, including a broken neck and ribs. Two other victims, 34 year old Ekapant, and 30 year old Sujitra were riding on a Honda MSX motorcycle and sustained serious injuries. They were rushed to Phyathai Sriracha Hospital. Santirarat was identified as the driver of the Toyota car. The 24 year old admitted to police that he was driving from Chon Buri to Pattaya and failed to stop at the red light, resulting in the tragic accident. The police have taken him into custody for further investigation. Meanwhile, the body of the deceased was transported by the Piyawet Varyagpati Sri Racha rescue unit to Laem Chabang Hospital, where it awaits collection by relatives for funeral rites, reported KhaoSod. The aftermath of the crash drew attention to the potential hazards of intersections and the devastating consequences of traffic rule violations. The incident serves as a sombre reminder of the importance of road safety and adherence to traffic signals. As the investigation continues, local authorities are likely to review measures to enhance traffic safety and prevent such accidents in the future. Bangkok police raid notorious Don Mueang gambling den again by Mitch Connor PHOTO VIA: Keenan Constance FROM:Unsplash.com Bangkok’s Don Mueang district was the scene of a police raid on Saturday as an old futsal stadium, notorious for its continued operation as a gambling den, was targeted yet again. Bangkok’s Don Mueang district was the scene of a police raid on Saturday as an old futsal stadium, notorious for its continued operation as a gambling den, was targeted yet again. The site, known for its resilience in the face of repeated shutdowns, has seen at least ten raids over several years. Leading a 30-officer team was the Superintendent of Don Mueang police station, Police Colonel Sukrit Mangklasawas, who targeted the gambling den nestled within the old futsal stadium on Soi Song Prapha 1. Despite the gates being barricaded and the surroundings laced with barbed wire, the team managed to infiltrate the stadium under the authority of a warrant issued by the Don Mueang Kwaeng Court. The entry required some officers to scale a fence and sever multiple locks to permit backup officers’ access. Upon entry, the team discovered three interlinked rooms, their interiors bolstered with soundproof materials. A total of four gamblers and six other individuals were apprehended, and numerous pieces of gambling equipment were confiscated. This particular den has been a recurring thorn in the side of the authorities, having been raided multiple times in recent years alone. The last raid on record took place on December 29 of the previous year, resulting in the arrest of 65 individuals. The den, run by an individual recognised as Amnuay, was subsequently shut down. Amnuay, who was handed a two years and eight months prison sentence in 2022 for a separate offence, is currently out on bail appealing the case. Despite the recurrent shutdowns, the gambling den has managed to resurrect itself time and again. Each closure has been followed by a brief hiatus, during which renovations to the premises are undertaken before operations resume. The most recent police search of the site occurred on March 27, when gambling equipment was seized, but no gamblers were discovered. Despite the repeated raids and fleeting shutdowns, the gambling den has managed to sustain its operations over time, reopening after each closure. The determined resilience of the den and its operators continues to pose a challenge to the authorities in their ongoing fight against illegal gambling. by Mitch Connor PHOTO VIA: Keenan Constance FROM:Unsplash.com Source: The Thaiger 2024-04-08 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Healthy alliance: Thai-US partnership to inject vitality into EEC healthcare by Alex Morgan Picture courtesy of Bangkok Post A joint venture is underway between Thailand and the United States, aimed at boosting investments within the healthcare and medical sectors in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC). A joint venture is underway between Thailand and the United States, aimed at boosting investments within the healthcare and medical sectors in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC). This initiative is designed to support healthcare services for both ageing and young populations while promoting targeted industries. Forecasts from the Thai Health Promotion Foundation indicate a rapid growth trajectory for the medical equipment market. This is due to Thailand’s shift into an aged society in 2022, where individuals over 60 years old make up over 20% of the country’s 71 million populace. Chula Sukmanop, the EEC Office’s secretary-general, highlighted the need for increased investment and the incorporation of new technological advancements for medical examinations and treatments to guarantee sustainable medical services. Sukmanop’s statement was made during the two-day US-Thailand Healthcare Workshop, an event co-organised by the American Chamber of Commerce and the US Trade and Development Agency. The workshop, which concluded on April 4, was designed to foster the development of the healthcare industry in Thailand. Robert Godec, the US ambassador to Thailand, stated that the organising entities aim to assist American healthcare companies in expanding their investments within the region, with a particular focus on Thailand. The US currently holds the position of the third-largest investor within the EEC in terms of value. The total investment from American entrepreneurs across all industries amounts to 44 billion baht, as stated by Chula. “We are preparing to offer investment incentive packages to attract new investors, especially in the medical and healthcare industry.” Several US healthcare and pharmaceutical companies, including Baxter, Johnson & Johnson, and Organon, have already invested in Thailand. Organon (Thailand), which commenced operations in 2021, specialises in the production of medical products for women, including reproductive medicine. The Thai Health Promotion Foundation reported in 2020 that Thai girls typically begin menstruating at the age of 11, with the youngest recorded age being seven. This data was derived from a survey conducted by the foundation in collaboration with Thammasat and Chulalongkorn universities, covering 8,161 samples from 95 schools. The results have raised concerns regarding precocious puberty and its association with health issues, particularly those related to reproductive health, reported Bangkok Post. by Alex Morgan Picture courtesy of Bangkok Post Source: The Thaiger 2024-04-08 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Thai-Lao QR payment system launched to boost border tourism by Mitch Connor Picture of The Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge, which crosses the Mekong River, connecting Mukdahan province in Thailand with Savannakhet in Laos, courtesy of Pattaya Mail The Bank of Thailand (BoT) and the Bank of Lao (BoL) have initiated a QR payment system to facilitate electronic transactions, a move that promises to increase tourist spending at the Thai-Laos border. The Bank of Thailand (BoT) and the Bank of Lao (BoL) have initiated a QR payment system to facilitate electronic transactions, a move that promises to increase tourist spending at the Thai-Laos border. The system was launched on the fringes of the 11th ASEAN Finance Ministers’ and Central Bank Governors’ Meeting in the Luang Prabang on April 3. Khemchat Somjaiwong, the head of the Khon Kaen Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the development. He expressed optimism that this cooperation could stimulate economic activity in the second quarter, particularly during the upcoming Songkran and Lao New Year festivals. “In the first phase, Lao people who cross to Thailand can use their Lao commercial bank apps on their mobile phones to scan the Thai PromptPay QR code to pay for goods or services in Thailand. The service has been available since April 3.” A second phase, slated for the end of June, will enable Thai citizens to utilise their mobile banking apps for purchases in Laos. This service is projected to spur spending, especially in the Nong Khai province of Thailand and Vientiane in Laos, said Khemchat. “Other provinces like Udon Thani and Khon Kaen will also benefit, as many Laotian people cross the Thai-Laos friendship bridges to buy products, see doctors, attend seminars or enjoy a relaxing holiday. They won’t have to worry about payment, as paying by QR code will be convenient.” According to the BoT, this collaboration is likely to strengthen trade, investment, tourism and the use of local currencies under the Asean Payment Connectivity initiative. Cross-border real-time payment Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput, the central bank governor, previously stated that the BoT recognises the significance of cross-border real-time payment linkage. The bank has already collaborated with five ASEAN countries, including Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam. “Laos is our sixth linkage under the ASEAN Payment Connectivity initiative. We believe cross-border QR payment services will be a safer, more efficient, and a cost-attractive alternative for retail payments in Asean, thereby promoting economic growth in the region and supporting the transition towards a digital society.” Bounleua Sinxayvoravong, governor of the BoL, echoed these sentiments. He stated the collaboration mirrors a shared vision for regional integration, economic development and prosperity. Various stakeholders are involved in the initiative, including the National ITMX Co and Lao National Payment Network Co (LAPNet), operators of instant payment systems. Kasikorn Bank and Banque Pour Le Commerce Exterieur Lao (BCEL) are overseeing cross-border settlements. Six banks from Laos have already joined, while Krungthai Bank and Bank of Ayudhya in Thailand will provide the service for QR payment in Laos in the second phase, reported Bangkok Post. by Mitch Connor TOP Picture of The Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge, which crosses the Mekong River, connecting Mukdahan province in Thailand with Savannakhet in Laos, courtesy of Pattaya Mail Source: The Thaiger 2024-04-08 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

The bill is likely to become law soon, but activists and those from the LGBTQ community say more work needs to be done. Bangkok, Thailand – Thanadech Jandee is thrilled that Thailand’s marriage equality bill, allowing same-sex couples to marry, is moving closer to becoming law. Thanadech, who was born biologically female and had gender reassignment surgery to identify as male last year, lives with his girlfriend and her son from a previous relationship. “I want the equal marriage law to be passed. It will make my family complete like any other family of men and women,” the 34-year-old Grab delivery driver in Bangkok told Al Jazeera. But along with many LGBTQ activists, Thanadech worries about the bill’s terminology. Activists say using “parents” and “mother and father” in legal terms will affirm those who identify as LGBTQ on equal terms with other couples. But efforts to get the wording into the bill have so far been unsuccessful. Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has issued a warning for a summer storm expected to affect 60 provinces across the northern, northeastern, and central regions and Bangkok from April 8 to April 11. The DDPM Director-General, Chaiwat Junthirapong, has urged citizens to stay vigilant and closely monitor updates to stay safe during this period. Today, Chaiwat announced that the DDPM has coordinated with the 60 provinces to prepare for the summer storm, characterized by thunderstorms and strong winds. Residents in the risk areas have been advised to follow the weather forecasts and adhere strictly to official warnings. The announcement follows a weather update from the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), which predicts the high-pressure system from China will extend over the northeastern region and the South China Sea. Coupled with westerly winds passing through Myanmar and northern Thailand, which is experiencing notably hot weather, conditions are ripe for summer storms. The provinces on alert include 17 in the northern region, such as Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Phrae, Nan, Uttaradit, Tak, Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet, Phitsanulok, Phichit, Phetchabun, Nakhon Sawan, and Uthai Thani. In the northeastern region, including 20 provinces; Loei, Nong Khai, Bung Kan, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Chaiyaphum, Khon Kaen, Maha Sarakham, Kalasin, Mukdahan, Roi Et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buriram, Surin, Si Sa Ket, and Ubon Ratchathani. The DDPM has also prepared personnel, equipment, and machinery for public disaster relief to respond swiftly to any incidents. Summer storm Chaiwat emphasised the importance of the public following weather forecasts and government information closely. People in high-risk areas should comply with warnings, inspect their homes and structures to ensure they are stable and strong, avoid staying in open areas, near large trees, billboards, or unstable structures to prevent harm from falling objects and be cautious of lightning dangers. Farmers are advised to brace trees and crops to protect against damage, reported KhaoSod. For those in risk areas, Chaiwat advised staying updated with the situation and following government alerts strictly. Citizens can receive warning notifications via the THAI DISASTER ALERT mobile application. In case of emergency due to public disasters, assistance can be requested through the DDPM’s LINE account, @1784DDPM or by calling the 1784 hotline available 24 hours for coordination of help. by Nattapong Westwood Picture courtesy of Dimitris Pallas, Unsplash Source: The Thaiger 2024-04-08 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe
