DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER-cum-Foreign Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-nukara said Tuesday (Apr. 2) unconfirmed hearsay of deposed Thai prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra being named a special envoy for Myanmar attached to the United Nations Secretary-General’s Office might only be an April Fools’ Day prank. Parnpree was responding to a news report published yesterday – April Fools’ Day – by Irrawaddy news website that Yingluck has been named a UN special envoy for Myanmar though the deposed Thai woman prime minister herself has not been aware of it. He said the questionable news report is yet to be officially confirmed by the UN Secretary General’s Office and doubted it would be found to be truthful. According to the Pheu Thai-attached deputy prime minister-cum-foreign minister, the Yingluck story, albeit unconfirmed for the time being, would almost certainly lie beyond Bangkok’s diplomatic concerns and by no means involve Thailand as a whole since the deposed prime minister is by no means part of the current Pheu Thai-led government. Myanmar government spokesperson Zaw Min Tun was quoted by the Chiang Mai-based news website as saying he would welcome the unconfirmed rumours of Yingluck being named a UN special envoy for Myanmar as “great news” for the junta-ruled Naypyidaw. This move follows a series of incidents that have raised concerns over the safety standards of the monorail lines. Suriya Jungrungreangkit, the Transport Minister, pointed out that the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has the contractual power to impose a fine amounting to 5% of the annual construction cost instalment payable to the concessionaires. This right can be exercised if the operators fail the performance assessment scheduled for the coming three months. A failure could also lead to a suspension of the annual instalment payments. Last week, two incidents involving the monorail lines raised questions about the overall safety and construction quality of the system. The Yellow Line’s services had to be momentarily suspended after metal fragments fell from the tracks, causing damage to several road vehicles. A couple of days later, concrete from the Pink Line’s elevated tracks construction site tumbled down, damaging a car and injuring its passenger. This isn’t the first time these monorail lines have been under scrutiny for safety. On January 2, a tyre from a Yellow Line train dislodged, damaging a taxi underneath. This incident followed another from the previous week, where a section of the Pink Line’s conductor rail broke free, damaging parked cars along Tiwanon Road in Nonthaburi. Eastern Bangkok Monorail, the operator of the Yellow Line launched in July of the previous year, is slated to receive US$25.05 billion in construction costs from the state. These costs are divided into ten annual instalments of US$2.5 billion. Similarly, Northern Bangkok Monorail, the operator of the Pink Line that opened on January 3rd, is set to receive US$22.5 billion in construction costs divided into ten annual instalments of US$2.25 billion. A car parked under the scorching Thai sun burst into flames, nearly burning the entire vehicle due to the presence of dry tissues and toothpicks. The incident, which serves as a stark warning about the dangers of leaving combustible materials in a car exposed to intense heat, occurred at noon today, April 2. The vehicle’s owner revealed the harrowing moments and the origin of the fire, advising others to remove similar items from their cars to prevent such incidents. The owner, Tawan Sapklin, shared that his usual routine involved parking his car in a residential alley and then commuting to work by motorcycle. On this fateful day, he received a call from his mother at noon, informing him that his car was ablaze. Rushing back home, he found that the firefighters from Ratburana Station had already extinguished the fire. Upon inspection, the origin of the fire was traced back to the rear seat where he had stored dry tissues and toothpicks. Sun speculated that the combination of the extreme heat from the previous day and the sunlight refracting through the rear window had ignited the flammable items. Fortunately, the proximity of Tawan’s parking spot to the fire station allowed for swift action by the fire service, preventing the fire from destroying the car. Tawan estimated the damage to be around 20,000 baht and plans to have his car thoroughly inspected and the seats replaced. He urged everyone to be cautious when parking in the sun and to ensure flammable items, like tissues and toothpicks, are not left inside the vehicle to avoid similar dangers. In January this year, a Thai driver transporting aluminium phosphate, commonly used to eliminate agricultural pests, found himself in a precarious situation when his vehicle caught fire. The incident unfolded in Soi Porn Sawang 7, Samrong Nua Subdistrict, Samut Prakan. In the coming week (Apr 7-14), the northeastern and eastern regions are expected to experience the brunt of this heatwave, with temperatures predicted to hover between 41-43°C. This surge in temperature is attributed to prevailing low-pressure areas coupled with scarce rainfall, amplifying the heat across these parts of the country. The TMD anticipates several instances of summer storms, including potential hailstorms, from April 8 to 10, triggered by an incoming cold front from upper Vietnam. While the southern region may also witness thunderstorms, the weather conditions will remain generally conducive for tourism activities. Such sporadic storms are expected to provide temporary relief from the relentless heat experienced in the early part of the month. For the duration of April, the TMD said average temperatures are predicted to be around 30% higher than the norm, especially in the North, Northeast, and the upper areas of the Central Plains and the East. Deputy National Police Surachate Hakparn, arrived at a police station in bangkok for questioning last night in resp0nse to a summons issued by the criminal court. he had failed to respond to three previous summonses for money laundering related to online gambling. The questioning process took over an hour. Speaking to reporters he said as long as the court has not given a verdict, he is still considered innocent. Pattaya —A 16-year-old boy was killed while his 12-year-old brother was injured when their motorbike crashed into a trailer truck in Pattaya on Tuesday afternoon, April 2nd, 2024. The two brothers were travelling to Pattaya to visit their mom, according to the surviving boy. The accident occurred at around 1:00 PM near the entrance of Soi Nong Ket Yai 7 in the Nongprue sub-district, Banglamung district, Chonburi province. Pattaya police and Sawang Boriboon rescue workers rushed to the scene following a report of the tragic accident. There, authorities found the victim, identified only by his first name as “Po,” lying deceased under the trailer truck. The 16-year-old boy had suffered grievous injuries from being crushed by the truck. Patong –An Indian motorbike rider was arrested in Patong for drunk driving on Tuesday early in the morning (April 2nd). The Patong Police told the Phuket Express that they had set up a police checkpoint on the Taweewong Road. At 1:14 A.M., the suspect identified only as Rahil, 34, Indian national, was stopped at the checkpoint. He was given an alcohol breath test that showed .80 milligrams percent of alcohol which was over the limit of .50. He was taken to Patong Police Station to face charges of drunk driving. This was the second drunk foreign driver arrested in Patong this month. At least nine foreign drivers were arrested in Patong last month as seen below. Patong Police have been especially focused on foreign drivers and tourists breaking Thai laws after a series of high profile cases of tourists and ex-pats behaving badly in Phuket and Thailand brought negative attention from local residents. The incident happened at a daily rental room in Soi Kor Phai 14 in the Nongprue sub-district, Banglamung district, Chonburi province. Pattaya police were called to the scene at 9:36 PM and found more than 20 people fighting. They managed to separate the two groups and calm the situation down. According to Pattaya police, one person, a 25-year-old Burmese national named Mr. Myo Zawoo Ci, who was in charge of taking care of the rental rooms, was injured. He was hit in the head with a hard object and suffered a cut and had profuse bleeding. He was taken to a local hospital by rescue workers.
