  1. BANGKOK (NNT) - During a recent session of the House of Representatives, the special commission on the study of creating integrated entertainment complexes to address illegal gambling and stimulate the economy recommended that the government should collaborate with the private sector. It stressed the importance of public involvement and the legalization of specific gambling forms, such as Thai boxing. The study concluded that these complexes could lower unemployment rates and curb illegal gambling, though they might also lead to potential negative effects like addiction and crime, possibly clashing with religious morals. The debate in the House of Representatives saw divided opinions. Supporters believed it would curb illegal activities and boost the economy, while critics doubted its effectiveness in addressing illegal gambling. The vote in the parliament was contentious but ultimately concluded with unanimous approval, tallying 253 votes in favor. The report will now be sent to the government for further evaluation. by Naark Rojanasuvan Source: NNT 2024-03-30 - Discover how Cigna Insurance can protect you with a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment. Emergency services, including police and volunteers from the Siam United Foundation, responded to the scene where the red Ferrari had veered off the road. A red Ferrari veered off course and plunged into a canal. The accident happened near the Chocolate View restaurant on Prasert-Manukitch Road in the Khan Na Yao district. Authorities were quickly notified of the incident, and a team of emergency responders and volunteers from the Siam United Foundation were dispatched to the location. A witness commented that it was a miracle that no one was hurt as bystanders looked on at the unusual sight of the high-performance vehicle in the waterway. Initial findings suggested the Ferrari had been recently repaired at a local garage. 15. A bus carrying a group of 25 teachers experienced brake failure while descending a hill in Prachin Buri province, Central Thailand, leading to a collision with a 22-wheel truck. The accident, which occurred in the Nadi district, Prachin Buri, left several passengers injured, with three sustaining serious injuries. In the aftermath of the brake failure, the tour bus driver lost control and crashed into the rear of a Volvo articulated truck carrying logs. The impact caused the bus to overturn, leaving passengers scrambling to escape through the windows. The injured were immediately attended to by rescue units and transferred to local hospitals for treatment. The bus, originating from Thep Udom Phitthaya School in Surin province, was en route to Prachin Kalyani School in the city of Prachinb Buri. The visit was part of a professional development excursion for the teachers. Those who were not seriously injured or chose not to go to the hospital were taken to a nearby checkpoint to await further transportation arranged by the school. The bus driver, Luan Wijit, recounted that the vehicle was functioning normally until it began the descent when it experienced a mechanical issue, and the brakes failed. Despite efforts to control the bus, collision with the truck ahead was inevitable. Anawil, the 31 year old truck driver, was unaware of the impending disaster until he felt the impact from behind. Police officials from the Highway Police Station at Nadi checkpoint promptly coordinated with the school to organise alternative transportation for the unharmed teachers. They also launched an investigation into the exact cause of the accident, reported KhaoSod. The stretch of road where the accident occurred, particularly the descent from the hill, spanning 6 kilometres and notorious for frequent accidents, will likely come under scrutiny following this incident. The curve at the shrine of Pu Tone and the approach to the hill have been identified as common sites for traffic accidents. by Nattapong Westwood Photo courtesy of KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger 2024-03-30 - Discover how Cigna Insurance can protect you with a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment. 23. Graffiti vandalism on the Chon Buri bridge has sparked outrage among locals, leading to calls for swift action by authorities. Social media was abuzz with criticism after images of spray-painted railings on the bridge surfaced online. The Chon Buri bridge, a landmark of the city, was defaced with large, blue spray-painted words, including crude language that has not only marred the bridge’s appearance but also offended passersby. Boontham Rungcharoen Wiwat, a 62 year old resident who exercises on the bridge, expressed his dismay at the sight of the graffiti, which had not been there on previous days. He emphasised that the bridge is public property and the responsibility of the whole community, serving as the face of Chon Buri. The defacement makes the bridge look dirty and damaged, and the foul language is particularly upsetting. Boontham urged the young perpetrators to stop such acts of vandalism on public structures and appealed to the authorities to find and punish the individuals responsible as quickly as possible. He also suggested that the vandals should be the ones to clean up their mess so they could feel the weight of their actions. The incident has highlighted the issue of vandalism in public spaces and the need for greater awareness and respect for community property. The bridge, also known as the Chaloem Phrakiat or the new bridge, runs along the coastline and is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. Its defacement has not only caused visual pollution but also raised concerns about the cultural values being upheld by the younger generation, reported KhaoSod. The authorities have been asked to investigate the incident and take appropriate measures to prevent such occurrences in the future. In related news, two Russian men on a graffiti rampage after a booze-fuelled escapade in Patong, Phuket, have been arrested. Police Major General Saranyu Chamnarnrat, Deputy Chief of the Provincial Police Region 8, revealed the arrest of the Russian vandals on Tuesday. by Nattapong Westwood Photo courtesy of KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger 2024-03-30 - Discover how Cigna Insurance can protect you with a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment. 24. Police reform may be easier than everyone thinks by Tulsathit Taptim File photo : Sittra Biabungerd (L) Absolutely hopeless as it may seem, the critical state of the Thai police deserves one last try. 25. Absolutely hopeless as it may seem, the critical state of the Thai police deserves one last try. And who says the last, desperate measure has to be extremely tough, costly or divisive? This week has seen rock bottom. Just when the country thought nothing would beat the Kamnan Nok incident, the most powerful men in the force have been accused, directly or indirectly, of involvement in massive and systematic bribe taking. In a matter of months, the badly-tainted image of the Thai police has been blown up apparently beyond repair. Newscasters and commentators are in unison about the force being rotten to its core. They all agree while “good apples” are out there, the bad ones have been too dominant and unstoppable. Transfers and promotions are less and less on merits, and corrupt practices are feeding on themselves. Bad bosses are making initially-good subordinates corrupt. Good bosses are getting overwhelmed by bad subordinates. Worse still, those with the disease are spreading it to politicians, reporters, community leaders, and finally the Thai society as a whole. A traffic offender feeling the urge to “settle” charges right on the spot because it would be cheaper and more convenient is an early symptom. According to well-known lawyer Sittra Biabungerd, there are too many bribe-taking opportunities nowadays. Illegal Indian immigrants selling nuts need to pay bribes, so do truck drivers, employers of visa-less foreign migrants, owners of entertainment venues that violate age limits or closing times, operators of Thai massage parlours offering “special” services, underground gambling racketeers and so on. by Tulsathit Taptim File photo : Sittra Biabungerd (L) Full story: Thai PBS 2024-03-30 - Discover how Cigna Insurance can protect you with a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment.
