Canada's Carney Under Fire for British Spelling in Docs
video screenshot Canadian linguists are urging Prime Minister Mark Carney to adopt Canadian spelling in government documents, challenging his use of British spellings. Experts stress this as a question of national identity, with words like "globalisation" and "catalyse" appearing in official papers such as the budget. In their open letter, they argue that maintaining Canadian English is essential for preserving the nation's linguistic heritage. Canadian English is distinct, influenced by both US and UK English, and includes unique expressions such as "toque" and "washroom." The main spelling differences include the use of 'z' versus 's' in words like "analyse" and British influences like 'ou' in "colour." While British terms like "tyre" are not adopted, the linguists worry about potential confusion if the current spelling system shifts. The open letter, dated 11 December, comes from Editors Canada and various linguistic professors, stressing that Canadian English promotes national pride. They argue that the use of Canadian English in official documents is straightforward and avoids confusion, referencing language as an identity marker. Prime Minister Carney has yet to comment on the matter. Professor Stefan Dollinger from the University of British Columbia pointed out the cultural importance of this issue, stating that the evolution of Canadian English marks a departure from its colonial past. Editors Canada president Kaitlin Littlechild mentioned budget documents and a news release involving President Donald Trump as instances of British spelling. She remains uncertain if the change reflects a misunderstanding or a specific direction. JK Chambers, a linguist at the University of Toronto, noted Carney's British influences but clarified he hasn't fully embraced archaic spellings. Critics argue this spelling choice risks undermining Canadian identity, while discussions continue about the need for standardised language in official settings, according to the BBC. Key Takeaways Canadian linguists demand a return to Canadian spellings in documents. The debate centres on national identity and linguistic history. Official responses await as discussions on standard language persist. Adapted by ASEAN Now from BBC 2025-12-16

Thailand Sets Three Ceasefire Conditions for Cambodia
File photo for reference only Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced three conditions for a ceasefire along the Thai-Cambodian border, with Cambodia required to declare a ceasefire first. The ministry dismissed a Wall Street Journal report suggesting the US is considering imposing tariffs on Thailand and Cambodia. Thailand's stance highlights concerns over Cambodia's previous actions that contradicted its statements, notably on December 14, when Cambodia intensified military action despite signalling a desire for peace. Nikorndej Balankura, spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, outlined the conditions: Cambodia must declare and sustain a ceasefire, and work sincerely on landmine clearance. Thailand criticised Cambodia’s recent military activities, including rocket fire that led to civilian casualties and intensified border tensions. The ministry has reached out to the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to address alleged violations and assert that Cambodia initiated the attacks, resulting in the closure of over 600 schools and medical facilities for safety reasons. Thailand also responded to accusations that its military operations have damaged archaeological sites, presenting evidence that Cambodian forces have used these areas as military bases. The suspension of land-border crossings in Cambodia has raised concerns, as it may potentially breach international law by affecting civilians. Thailand stands ready to assist its nationals in Cambodia through its embassy and consulate for identification and repatriation purposes. Addressing the Wall Street Journal report about potential US tariffs, Nikorndej denied receiving further confirmation beyond a recent phone call between US and Thai leaders, during which they agreed to resume trade talks. Meanwhile, Thailand expressed a preference for an in-person ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting to clearly communicate border developments, although it was postponed to December 22 due to scheduling conflicts, reported The Nation. Key Takeaways Thailand sets three ceasefire conditions, demanding Cambodia act first. Allegations of Cambodian military aggression prompt Thai UN appeal. ASEAN meeting postponed; US tariff concerns were addressed without confirmation. Russia Rejects Mercenary Claims in Thai-Cambodian Dispute
File photo: Cambodia drone The Russian Embassy in Thailand has firmly dismissed media reports alleging that Russian citizens are being recruited as mercenaries by Cambodia to partake in the escalating border conflict with Thailand. In a statement on Facebook, the embassy declared these reports false and baseless, emphasising that they could jeopardise the rights of Russian nationals visiting Thailand as tourists or for business. Background information reveals that these allegations emerged from certain Thai media outlets, causing diplomatic unease. The embassy reaffirmed Russia's commitment to upholding its longstanding amicable ties with both Thailand and Cambodia. This stance was reaffirmed by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs during a briefing on December 11, where they underscored their dedication to peaceful conflict resolution. The embassy advised against irresponsible reporting, stressing that misinformation could heighten tensions and impact bilateral relationships negatively. Concerns grew in Thailand after security authorities were alerted to alleged foreign mercenaries, whose nationalities were unknown but reportedly linked to the Cambodian government for espionage purposes related to the border strife. Reports have suggested that Thailand was used as a meeting place for these mercenaries, with some travelling to Cambodia via Thai airports. The situation received heightened attention after the Thai military noted the advanced drones operated by Cambodian forces, which require skilled operators. In response, Thai police in Nakhon Ratchasima have urged locals to report any suspicious foreigners, particularly Russians, staying in accommodations. This area hosts Air Wing 1, the base for Thailand’s F-16s, which have engaged in airstrikes on Cambodian military bases recently. Thai PBS WORLD reported that Bangkok's international airports have also increased security measures to monitor mercenary movements. Key Takeaways: The Russian Embassy in Thailand denies claims about mercenary activities. Allegations risk damaging Russia’s relations with Thailand and Cambodia. Thai security has increased vigilance amid espionage concerns. Concert Scalper’s 850,000-Baht Loss Sparks Social Media Storm
Picture courtesy of Facebook/ผู้บริโภค The online community is buzzing with a viral Facebook post from a concert-ticket reseller claiming a catastrophic B850,000 loss. The woman, alongside a friend, gambled on purchasing 327 tickets for the Nanglen Music Festival, Pak Chong, aiming to profit from resale. Originally costing B2,600 each, their total investment proved disastrous when the market was flooded with excess tickets. Last year's rapid sell-out and the advice from ticket distributors suggesting limited availability this time influenced the woman's decision significantly. With expectations of earning B50-100 per ticket, the plan seemed sound. However, the organisers unexpectedly released more tickets, prompting a steep drop in prices as the event approached. Facing oversupply, resellers slashed prices, forcing the woman to offload tickets for as little as B200, many still unsold. She confessed the financial hit wiped out savings, pawned gold, and a financed car. Emotionally, she described feeling overwhelmed and standing amid ruins, expressing her plea for support and thanks to those who assisted, reported the Bangkok Post. The post ignited a social media frenzy, attracting both sympathy and criticism. Some condemned the ethics of bulk-ticket resales, while others revelled in the misfortune. Due to intense backlash, the Facebook post was deleted after relentless negative commentary. Key Takeaways A concert-ticket speculator claimed a B850,000 loss on Nanglen Music Festival tickets. Over-supply led to drastic price cuts, devastating the reseller’s finances. The story sparked online debate, leading to the post's removal due to criticism. The election date, now official, marks a crucial moment for voters to elect Members of the House of Representatives (MPs). Advance voting is scheduled for 1st February, covering both in-constituency and out-of-constituency voters, alongside provisions for citizens with disabilities and the elderly. Candidate registration for constituency MPs is slated for the 27th to 31st of December 2025, with party-list MPs and prime ministerial candidates registering at the Centara Life Government Complex Hotel in Bangkok from the 28th to the 31st of December. Baht Hits Four-Year High, Puts Pressure on Bank of Thailand
Baht's Surge Sparks Economic Concerns Across Thailand The Thai baht’s growing strength is creating tension within the nation’s economy, says Ekniti Nitithanprapas, the country's acting finance minister. Increased capital flows from the US Fed's interest rate cuts have further fuelled the currency's appreciation. This situation has resulted in the baht reaching its most elevated level against the US dollar in over four years, sparking fears of further volatility. The current baht valuation is challenging Thailand's economic foundation, primarily reliant on exports. Mr Ekniti noted issues stemming from excessive currency strength in discussions with the Bank of Thailand. Measures have been implemented to mitigate this, such as directing state enterprises to boost imports and hastening foreign debt repayments. Additionally, the Bank of Thailand has asked financial institutions to increase the scrutiny of forex transactions, particularly those dealing with overseas gold trades. They require documentation to confirm genuine gold export transactions to stabilise the currency further. A proposal for revising forex control regulations is also in play, suggesting large gold traders report transaction data to regulators. Kasikorn Research (K-Research) predicts a further strengthening of the baht, potentially reaching 31 to the dollar in the near future. Since the beginning of the year, it has appreciated by 8.4%, largely due to US rate cuts and global gold price hikes. The rapid rise has alarmed traders, with technical factors also exacerbating the situation. The appreciation has led to reduced revenue for exporters due to adverse currency conversion rates. This is especially problematic for SMEs whose earnings are in foreign currencies. The Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC) underscores the impact on revenue, competitiveness, and business sustainability. The TNSC calls for improved exchange-rate risk management, urging the government to minimise volatility and enhance exporters' access to financial tools. They recommend structural changes, advocating for value-based competition rather than price competition to boost long-term resilience. Experts anticipate challenges due to the persistence of fluctuations unless they effectively implement stabilising measures. The dynamic market and economic environment continue to test Thailand’s financial strategies moving forward, reported the Bangkok Post. Key Takeaways: The strong baht is impacting Thailand’s economy negatively, especially exports. The Bank of Thailand is increasing regulations to stabilise the currency. Kasikorn Research predicts further appreciation due to external factors. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Bangkok Post 2025-12-15

Thai Immigration Bureau Tightens Visa Checks Amid Security Fears
file photo Thailand has ramped up its visa-free entry checks for Cambodians and certain high-risk Westerners, responding to concerns over potential mercenary threats. The Immigration Bureau made this move following social media uproar and expert opinions warning of possible security risks from foreign operatives. Authorities urge tourists to be understanding of the tightened measures as they aim to protect national security, Amarin TV said this afternoon, December 15. The increase in scrutiny follows tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, with clashes resurfacing between the two nations. Despite ongoing commercial flights, the Thai authorities are wary of foreign militants exploiting visa-free entry privileges to infiltrate and operate behind battle lines. Immigration officials have denied entry to 185 individuals since early December, focusing particularly on groups from Eastern Europe, Northern Asia, and Cambodian nationals whose entry seems questionable during the current unrest. Pol. Maj. Gen. Cherngron Rimphadee, the Immigration Bureau spokesperson, highlighted the close monitoring of potentially prohibited groups without disrupting normal tourism, especially during peak season when thousands of tourists arrive daily. The measures are taken in cooperation with security intelligence agencies to maintain a clear focus on real threats without hampering genuine visitors. Pol. Maj. Gen. Narongsak Phromtha, commander of the Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Police, noted an increase in public awareness campaigns and checkpoints at high-risk locations. Despite the ongoing cautionary measures, no immediate threats or suspicious activities have been identified. Authorities have prohibited drone usage during this period, maintaining robust security protocols to safeguard the region, which sees nearly nine million tourists annually, reported Thai Newsroom. Key Takeaways: Thailand has heightened visa checks in response to mercenary threats. Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have spurred security measures. No immediate threats have been found, but precautions continue. As the baht rose to 31.523 per dollar, marking the strongest level since June 2021, the central bank responded by tightening foreign exchange forward transactions for gold traders. This year, the baht has strengthened over 8%, positioned as Asia's second-best performer due to soaring gold prices and a weakening dollar. The baht's persistent rise is compelling the Bank of Thailand to consider further easing measures during its meeting on Wednesday, especially as Thai exporters grapple with new US tariffs. Despite efforts to mitigate gold’s impact on the baht, the ongoing peak tourism season is bolstering the currency. Senior strategist Wee Khoon Chong from BNY remarked that the baht's strength is "unwelcome" amid sluggish economic growth, low inflation, and political instability. However, the baht’s momentum might falter due to a border clash with Cambodia, which is affecting investor confidence. Political uncertainties tied to the upcoming election, potentially as early as January, are also expected to create volatility. Nevertheless, Barclays strategists, including Audrey Ong, noted that the baht would continue benefiting from the dollar's softness and good fourth-quarter prospects, albeit with a possible political risk premium affecting the currency into the new year, reported the Bangkok Post. Key Takeaways: The Thai baht recently climbed to a four-year peak against the US dollar. A potential easing is on the horizon as the Bank of Thailand meets to discuss policies. Political tensions and border conflicts could dampen investor confidence in the baht. Picture courtesy of Thai PBS World Cambodia’s Senate President Hun Sen has denied allegations of human rights violations after Thai nationals claimed they were barred from returning home through land border crossings. He insisted the restrictions were purely for safety, not intended to prevent travel. Tensions have risen since December 11 when Thai nationals reported issues at the Cambodian border near Si Sa Ket province. Reports indicated that Cambodian border officials did not clarify the reasons for refusal, leading to allegations that 12,500 baht per person was demanded to cross the border. The Royal Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh has formally requested assistance from Cambodia’s Ministry of Interior. However, no official response has come from Cambodian authorities. The Royal Thai Armed Forces criticised the alleged actions, warning they could violate human rights and international laws. Royal Thai Army spokesperson Winthai Suvaree highlighted that such actions may contravene the Geneva Convention and additional protocols meant to protect civilians during conflicts. Hun Sen refuted claims of intentional obstruction, clarifying that land border closings were for safety amid increased tensions. He stressed that air travel remains unaffected, and he encouraged Thai nationals to use available flights. In addition, those near the Cambodia–Vietnam border were advised to cross into Vietnam first before heading back to Thailand. Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has prepared contingency plans to assist stranded Thai citizens. Deputy spokesperson Maratee Nalita Andamo confirmed aircraft with a 1,000-seat capacity per day have been arranged at Siem Reap for their return, reported The Thaiger.
