  1. A CABINET RESHUFFLE would be unlikely at any time until after the 2024 budget bill has been finally turned into law in April, confirmed Pheu Thai wheeler-dealer Phumtham Wechayachai today (Feb 28). Viewed as a right-hand man of de facto Pheu Thai boss-cum-convict on parole Thaksin Shinawatra, the Pheu Thai wheeler-dealer said it would be unlikely for Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin to reshuffle his cabinet of ministers until after the 3.48 trillion baht budget bill has passed its final reading at parliament and become law. Nevertheless, the real estate mogul-turned prime minister, allegedly pushed to rise to power by Thaksin’s sister/deposed prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra, would not reshuffle his cabinet without the green light from the de facto Pheu Thai boss, according to partisan sources. 11. In a recent session of the Pattaya City Council, member Metakrit Sunthornrot ignited concern over the persistent challenges besieging the South Pattaya Canal. Despite assurances of advancement, the situation continues to spiral, prompting intensified calls for immediate intervention. Metakrit underscored the city’s dedication to tackling environmental adversities, particularly in the crucial management of the South Pattaya Canal. Plans were detailed to combat various issues, encompassing canal dredging, encroachment management, and capacity expansion for enhanced drainage efficiency. However, Metakrit disclosed that despite efforts to reclaim public spaces and cleanse the canal, fresh obstacles emerged. Tenants residing in canal-side buildings reportedly diverted wastewater unlawfully, escalating pollution levels. Furthermore, indiscriminate waste dumping and sedimentation further deteriorated the canal’s condition. Metakrit highlighted delays in constructing efficient drainage channels and rampant violations of regulations, including unauthorised construction near the canal. Residents’ frustration soared due to perceived sluggish and ineffective responses from authorities. Expressing apprehension about the future, Metakrit queried the effectiveness of current measures in tackling persistent issues, reported Pattaya Mail. Despite the Beautiful Clean Canal project’s aspirations to revitalise the waterway, its fruition appeared distant. Metakrit implored urgent action from authorities and stakeholders to confront the severity of environmental challenges in the South Pattaya Canal. Strict law enforcement and immediate measures to mitigate environmental degradation were deemed indispensable. In related news, reports revealed strange pink canal water in Nonthaburi on Valentine’s Day as scientists scrambled to uncover the truth behind the sudden rosy hue. Experts from the Department of Science Service (DSS) embarked on an investigation uncovering startling findings that could change the way we see pollution. The case, discovered in Khlong Bang Phraek near the Big C department store on Tiwanon Street, sparked urgent calls for action. In other news, Kamala Beach in Phuket found itself in a murky situation, the main canal has turned black and is producing an unpleasant smell. by Nattapong Westwood Photo courtesy of Pattaya Mail Source: The Thaiger 2024-02-28 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 13. A Thai man, who attacked a monk at a temple in Chon Buri province, later died after the sharp head of a Buddha statue pierced his chest during a rampage in the temple’s main hall. Locals suggested that his death appeared to be the swift result of karma. Residents in the Banbung district of Chon Buri province sought assistance from Banbung Police Station officers at about 1pm yesterday, February 27, after a Thai man, 49 year old Ek, went on a rampage and attacked a monk named Best. According to residents, Ek was under the influence of methamphetamine, also known as Yaba. He and Best were friends, and Ek stayed with Best at the temple for a few days before the incident took place. Officers arrived at the temple and discovered that Ek hid himself in the main hall. He locked all the doors and windows and destroyed Buddha statues inside the hall. Police waited outside for safety reasons, suspecting Ek might have a weapon in his hands. They called Ek and told him to surrender to the police but, as there was no response, they decided to break down the door and enter. To their shock, they saw Ek lying dead in a pool of blood. A statue of Buddha was lying on Ek’s chest and the sharp head of the statue was piercing his chest. A video of the operation showed police and locals shouting and screaming at the shocking incident. Police suspect that Ek was trying to climb on top of the largest statue in the main hall to destroy it. However, he accidentally slipped off the large statue and fell onto the pointed head of a smaller statue. The head pierced Ek’s heart and lungs, killing him. The monk, Best, confessed to the police that he took Yaba with his friend Ek and agreed to leave the monkhood for his misconduct. Best explained that Ek took the drug and attacked him in the morning by hitting his arm with a fluorescent tube. He ran away from his accommodation to seek help from other monks, while Ek ran into the main hall and began destroying statues. by Petch Petpailin Photo via Facebook เครือสหพัฒน์-แหลมฉบัง-ชลบุรี Source: The Thaiger 2024-02-28 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 14. Chinese man arrested at Bangkok airport with 3,000 grammes of heroin by Petch Petpailin Photo via Facebook/ สำนักงานคณะกรรมการป้องกันและปราบปรามยาเสพติด Airport Interdiction Task Force (AITF) officers at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok arrested a Chinese man who attempted to smuggle 3,000 grammes of heroin into Australia. The drugs were concealed in books and powder bottles. The Thai Narcotics Control Board Office (ONCB), stationed in China, reported the drug trafficking plan involving a suspicious Chinese man to the AITF. Further investigation revealed that the man intended to smuggle drugs from Thailand to Melbourne City in Australia via Suvarnabhumi Airport on Monday, February 26. AITF officers closely monitored flights to Melbourne until they identified the suspicious Chinese man, whose identity matched the reported information. Upon inspecting his belongings, officers discovered heroin in his possession. The heroin was concealed in two plastic baby powder bottles while six bars were hidden within the books, totalling 3,000 grammes. The Chinese drug smuggler faces two charges including: Section 90 of the Narcotics Control Act: importing Category 1 drug (heroin) without permission. The penalty is imprisonment of up to 15 years and a fine of 1.5 million baht. Section 145(1) of the Narcotics Control Act: possessing Category 1 drug (heroin) for sale. The penalty is imprisonment from two to 20 years and a fine of 200,000 to 2 million baht. The Permanent Secretary of the ONCB, Phanurat Lakboon, reported that the AITF would coordinate with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Royal Thai Embassy in Beijing to search for relevant suspects in this drug trafficking case. Phanurat stated that drug trafficking through airports is an important focus for the ONCB, in addition to drug trafficking at Thailand’s borders. From October 1, 2023, to the present day, officers swooped to sweep up 85 drug trafficking incidents involving Thailand and Australia. Some 116.11 kilogrammes of heroin and 116.14 kilogrammes of crystal meth were confiscated during the operation. One of the most recent crackdowns on drug trafficking between Thailand and Australia was reported in January this year. A Thai woman was hired by a Laotian man to deliver cushions from Thailand to Australia. The woman’s father suspected something wasn’t quite right with the weight of the Laotian man’s cushions and decided to seek a police investigation. 16. Officials in the southern province of Songkhla have issued a warning about the presence of the stinging Portuguese man-of-war. The jellyfish-like creature has been spotted at Chala That Beach on several occasions, prompting the authorities to warn against swimming in the sea. The Portuguese man-of-war is actually a siphonophore, with long and stinging tentacles. It’s readily identified by its balloon-like (usually) blue-coloured ‘float’, which can rise up to 15 centimetres above the surface of the water. It can be blue, violet or even pink in colour. The sea creature has been spotted along the shoreline between the Songkhla districts of Singha Nakhon and Mueang. It is considered one of the most venomous marine creatures in the world. It’s understood several tourists have already reported being stung by the creature. 18. A recent social media post spurred widespread online discussion after a condo resident in Thailand shared images of mysterious stains found while cleaning a sofa. The post, uploaded by a popular Facebook page known for sharing curious and intriguing stories, depicted large blotches resembling bloodstains, prompting the tenant to question the origin of the marks and express concern over the unsettling discovery. The tenant, having recently moved into a new condo, decided to deep clean the furniture after two months of residence. During the cleaning process, the discovery of these stains, particularly alarming due to the absence of any similar marks on the sofa or pillow covers, raised alarm. The agency responsible for the property could not explain, further adding to the mystery and anxiety of the situation, reported KhaoSod. Online commentators have since dived into a frenzy of speculation. Some suggested the stains could be menstrual blood that had somehow seeped through the cushions. Others offered less ominous explanations, like spilt chocolate milk or wine. Yet, the true nature of the stains remains undetermined, as the tenant and online community grapple with various theories. In related news, a case of shocking tenant misconduct involving a young woman and her boyfriend, both of whom hold degrees in acting, came to light when the owner of the rented condo exposed the deplorable state of their apartment. The initial account of this incident was shared by a disgruntled TikTok user who had rented out the property, only to discover that the seemingly tidy and attractive tenant had turned the property into a pigsty. The owner, who had engaged a letting agency to find tenants, conceded that he had never met the female tenant in person and had only communicated with her through the LINE application. After several months without receiving rent, he decided to pay a visit to the property. However, the tenant refused to open the door. by Nattapong Westwood Picture courtesy of อีซ้อขยี้ข่าว Facebook Source: The Thaiger 2024-02-28 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 22. A tragic motorcycle accident claimed the lives of a young man and woman in Chon Buri province today at 5am. A couple encountered a grim omen in the form of a barn owl feasting on a dead dog by the roadside shortly before crashing into a garbage truck and succumbing to their injuries at the scene. Police Deputy Inspector Jaruek Phothong from Phan Thong Police Station, along with the Swang Uthayan Phan Thong rescue team, promptly arrived at the accident site along the Phan Thong-Ban Kao road, in front of Ruamkit Company Limited in Ban Kao sub-district. There, they discovered the lifeless bodies of 24 year old Apisit, who suffered a fractured skull and broken arm, and 22 year old Paweentida, with a broken neck. The accident occurred on their return trip from a visit to Panasnikhom district. The couple’s Honda Scoopy I motorcycle, with the registration number 6คน3238 Bangkok, lay overturned and severely damaged behind the Ban Kao Subdistrict Municipality’s garbage truck, bearing the registration number 86-2673 Chon Buri. The municipal employees, who were collecting trash at the time, were shocked by the sudden crash, reported KhaoSod. Friends of the deceased, referred to as Aek and Bee for anonymity, reported that they were in a group of five returning from Panasnikhom. They had gone ahead of the couple and, upon realising that Apisit and Paweentida had not followed, doubled back to find the tragic scene. They recounted a chilling moment earlier when one of their group spotted a barn owl—a bird often associated with bad omens—eating a dead dog. Following this sighting, Apisit mentioned death, although his exact words were unclear; all that was heard was him repeating the word die. Police are investigating the incident further and will review CCTV footage from the scene to proceed with legal action. by Nattapong Westwood Picture courtesy of KhaoSod Full story: The Thaiger 2024-02-28 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 24. South Korean rapper and YouTuber, Il Hong Min, commonly known as Phi Hong, recently aired his dissatisfaction with a tuk tuk service encountered during his visit to Ayutthaya, Thailand. In a video shared on his Oppa Hong channel, he revealed that he was charged 1,200 baht for a four-hour tour, a service he claimed was forcefully sold to him and his friend by the 59 year old tuk tuk driver, Somjit Tharangam. Somjit allegedly also asserted that Grab taxi services were illegal in the area, a claim Hong found surprising, having used the service during his numerous trips to Thailand over the past two decades. The video, which forms part of Hong’s journey through Thailand’s 77 provinces, prompted a response from a local Facebook page, Ayutthaya Station. It urged relevant authorities to investigate the incident, citing potential harm to the image of Thailand’s tourism sector, reported Bangkok Post. Following this, the Ayutthaya Provincial Land Transport Office directed transport officials, including the deputy district chief and provincial Tourist Police, to examine the issue involving the local tuk tuk service. The investigation concluded that the fare Somjit charged was in line with the pricing standard established by joint committees during the administration of the now-defunct National Council for Peace and Order, as affirmed by Kannika Rerkukot, head of the transportation academic group. However, Rerkukot pointed out that Somjit’s forceful sales approach could have compelled the passengers to purchase the service against their will. In light of this, Rerkukot announced plans for a meeting with tuk tuk operators and associated agencies to discuss a more reasonable fare rate for tuk tuk services. Furthermore, she ordered Tharangam and her colleagues operating near the Ayutthaya Railway Station to partake in an attitude adjustment session at the provincial land transport office. This is aimed at improving their customer relations approach. Rerkukot also advised all tuk tuk drivers to display their price tags visibly to allow tourists to discern the costs clearly, stressing that these prices must adhere to fare rate regulations. In addition, she instructed Somjit to dismantle the Tourist Police logo placed on the price rate tag, as it was an inappropriate use of the symbol. by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of Oppa Hong (YouTube) Full story: The Thaiger 2024-02-28 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
