Thai Govt Implements Measures to Combat Illegal Burning and Improve Air Quality
On February 15th, 2024, Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul disclosed directives following a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. Governors were instructed to conduct field inspections and engage communities to halt illegal agricultural burning. The Ministry of the Interior, Natural Resources and Environment, and Royal Thai Army united per the Prime Minister’s order to assist locals in agricultural disposal and explore alternatives to crop burning. Anutin convened with northern governors in Chiang Rai to address PM 2.5 concerns. While Chiang Mai boasted good air quality recently, Kanchanaburi faced troubling hot spots, prompting Anutin’s intervention. In the Bangkok Metropolitan Region, remote work measures were under consideration alongside intensified vehicle emissions checks. Anutin noted these initiatives aligned with ongoing discussions on amendments to the Clean Air Act bill. However, the threat posed by China’s state subsidies and economic policies to Thailand is also long-term. Of course, it has also been exacerbated by the policies pursued by the previous government. Thai PM raises the alarm over Chinese product onslaught: Trade deficit balloons, economic future growth and well being is at risk. The government is urged to act swiftly to safeguard local industries and tackle the influx of cheap goods. A danger that extends beyond the economy. The threat to national security also exists long term due to Chinese subsidies for its agriculture and fisheries industries. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin raised the red flag this week against cheap Chinese imports undercutting Thai producers. His rhetoric was backed up by efforts by officials to raise regulatory barriers and axe concessions to the deluge of Chinese products which have left Thailand with a ballooning trade deficit. However, this is an even more significant problem. In effect, it highlights at least a decade of misguided economic policies. In short, Thailand has been blindsided by China. The previous government, in particular, failed to see the real threat posed not only to the kingdom’s manufacturing base but also its food security and even its stability in the longer term. Certainly, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin urged the Revenue and Customs Departments to take measures to curb the trend. The Prime Minister’s call for action comes in the wake of rising disquiet voiced by various economic bodies. by Joseph O' Connor Full story: Thai Examiner.com 2024-02-17 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Somsak Downplays Tale Of Two Prime Ministers
DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER SOMSAK Thepsuthin yesterday (Feb.16) downplayed criticism that Thailand might be virtually, simultaneously run by two prime ministers – the current Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Somsak confirmed Srettha who lawfully performs as head of government will not be overruled by anyone else but declined to confirm or deny whether Thaksin, the de facto Pheu Thai boss-cum-convict, might probably put his hands on any government affairs or give out orders to any members of cabinet and other government officials, albeit in behind-the-scenes fashion, after he has been released on parole on the upcoming Sunday. The Pheu Thai-backed Srettha who had been quietly promoted to elected premiership by Thaksin’s sister/deposed prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra remained tight-lipped as to whether he might possibly be overshadowed by her brother on parole. The de facto Pheu Thai boss-cum-convict who is largely expected to manipulate government affairs and take control of cabinet members, albeit in surreptitious, hush-hush fashion, since he allegedly already took part in the country’s power play literally from a private ward of Police Hospital shortly after he had returned from self-exile abroad last August. PM Eyeing A-List Performers Amid Taylor Swift’s Singapore Shows
PRIME MINISTER Srettha Thavisin is moving to draw A-list performers to Thailand to boost tourism amid the upcoming shows by Taylor Swift in Singapore with the island republic being her only stop in Southeast Asia during The Eras Tour, Matichon newspaper said today (Feb. 16). Speaking at iBusiness Forum 2024 entitled “Reshaping Thailand for a Sustainable Future”, Srettha said many people are probably wondering why Taylor Swift didn’t come to Thailand and some Swifties might fly to Singapore to catch her concert taking place during March 2, 3, 4 & 7, 8, 9 at the at the National Stadium there. The big question is why A-list performers like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé did not come here and while Coldplay did do so it was only for two days. The answer would probably shock people, he said, and this is because the Singapore government is subsidising the shows at US$2 to 3 million per show, or approximately 500 million baht. by TNR Staff Taylor Swift, left, and Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, right.
