Thailand allocates 50 million baht for foreign tourist insurance by Alex Morgan Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post The Thai Tourism and Sports Ministry has allocated a budget of 50 million baht (US$1.38) for the fiscal year of 2024 to financially aid foreign tourists in the event of accidents or death. The ministry stated that this amount is likely to cover its expected influx of 35 million foreign visitors this year, in accordance with the average annual claims made over the past five years. Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol emphasised the government’s regard for the tourism industry as a key source of revenue. The ministry aims to ensure the safety of foreign tourists. As of February 11, there have been 4.3 million foreign arrivals, putting the country on track to meet its target of 35 million by year-end, said Sudawan. The allocated 50 million baht budget, received from a central fund, is earmarked to compensate foreign tourists for any mishaps that may occur during their travels in Thailand between January 1 and August 31 this year. The coverage includes up to 1 million baht per person in case of death, and 300,000 baht (US$8,296) per person for permanent organ loss, loss of sight, or a permanent disability. Furthermore, a maximum of 500,000 baht (US$13,825) is set aside for medical expenses, reported Bangkok Post. Tourists qualify for coverage if the incidents are not due to their negligence, intention for illegal activity, or risky behaviour. They must be visiting Thailand with a tourist visa or for tourism purposes. The insurance programme fills in the gap left by the expiration of the Foreign Tourists Assistance Fund. There is no evidence that current COVID-19 strains cause higher levels of illness; instead, the upsurge in Thailand is due to higher transmissibility of the virus and lower adherence of people to personal protective measures. In addition, a significant minority of people in Thailand are either unvaccinated or are incompletely vaccinated. The Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) is contemplating a reduction in the permissible limit of methamphetamine pills from five to three. The current rule exempts individuals from criminal charges if they are found with five or fewer methamphetamine pills or 300 milligrams of heroin. Instead of legal proceedings, these individuals are categorised as drug users in need of rehabilitation. In contrast, previously, possession of even small quantities of drugs would lead to prosecution and a permanent criminal record, impacting future opportunities. A giant python named Boonrod was saved from a near-fatal dog bite by military personnel in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand, and required urgent veterinary care, including sterilisation, before being returned to the wild. The incident occurred yesterday, February 14, when soldiers from the Special Warfare Training Camp in Sichon, along with their instructors, carried the nearly 5-meter-long, 10-kilogram male python to Sichon Animal Hospital after it was discovered with severe wounds near its cloaca. The python, found on a mangosteen tree after the attack, was in critical condition with its internal organs protruding from a grave injury. Vet Piyaporn Wattanapun took immediate action, performing surgery to remove parts of the damaged tissue, including parts of the reproductive organs, which made sterilisation necessary. The baht, Thailand’s currency, hit a three-month low against the US dollar yesterday, February 14, slipping below 36 to the dollar. This was attributed to higher than anticipated US inflation, which led the market to predict a delay in the Federal Reserve’s first interest rate cut, initially expected in May. Quoting Kasikorn Research Centre, the baht was valued at a low of 36.13 against the dollar before rising slightly to 36.07 to 36.09 baht. This is compared to Tuesday’s closing rate of 35.7 baht. Kanjana Chockpisansin, head of research at the think tank, stated, “The baht is moving in line with other Asian currencies, as the world gold price also fell below US$2000 per ounce.” The US dollar and bond yield experienced a sharp increase following the rise of the US consumer price index (CPI) by 3.1% year-on-year in January, beating the 2.9% market prediction. Police in Phuket arrested a Chinese woman for keeping a lion cub. Her arrest follows complaints that she placed the 2 month old cub on display in her coffee shop. Police and wildlife officials went to the coffee shop and then to her hotel room where they found the woman with the baby cub. Officers say the woman bought the cub in January for 250 thousand baht, but she failed to produce supporting documents.
