  2. Police successfully rescued a Thai woman from a hotel in Chon Buri province after she was kidnapped by a besotted man who fell in love with her despite her being married and rejecting his advances. A 39 year old Thai man filed a missing person’s report at Ban Pho Police Station on January 5 telling officers that his 31 year old wife had gone missing. He believed her friend, named Kong, kidnapped her. The man said Kong had been flirting and stalking his wife for years, even though she was married with a child and continued to reject him. Officers tracked down a baht bus on CCTV that the victim usually took to her workplace. The vehicle was seen parked opposite her workplace and the woman got out as usual. As she got out, a Thai man, later confirmed to be Kong, parked his motorcycle and approached the woman. Kong threatened the woman with a gun and ordered her onto his motorcycle. The woman’s colleague was seen running across the road trying to save her but she had to step back as Kong pointed his gun at her. by Petch Petpailin Photo via Channel 7 Full story: The Thaiger 2024-01-09 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 4. Phuket’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation assured that despite a malfunction in one of the tsunami buoys deployed in the Andaman Sea, the country’s tsunami early warning system remains fully operational. The faulty buoy, identified as No.23461, is 340 kilometres off Phuket’s coast and ceased transmitting signals last Wednesday, as the Foundation of National Disaster Warning Council reported. The council expressed concerns that the malfunctioning buoy could leave Thailand vulnerable to tsunamis generated by earthquakes in the region. However, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation clarified on a social media post that the buoy had stopped transmitting signals due to a positional issue, and this would not impact the country’s tsunami early warning system. The department elaborated that the system depends on data from several buoys in the Andaman Sea and other agencies, including the Royal Thai Navy’s Hydrographic Department. “Our tsunami buoys also share information with other agencies both at home and abroad.” by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of Royal Thai Navy Full story: The Thaiger 2024-01-09 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 10. The government has launched tax breaks to encourage consumer spending this year, in a bid to stimulate the economy. But will it work and who is going to benefit? From January 1 to February 15, the governments is implementing “Easy E-Receipt”, a tax deduction measure. Who is eligible? Under the scheme, individuals will receive a tax deduction of up to 50,000 baht from their taxable income if they shop for goods and services from businesses in line with government criteria. The actual tax deduction will materialize when they file their annual personal income tax returns next year. To take advantage of it, consumers have to get an e-tax invoice or e-receipt from the sellers. The e-tax invoice will be issued by businesses registered in the value-added tax (VAT) system, which includes large corporations. But some items are excluded from the tax deduction scheme. They include: alcoholic drinks-spirit, beer and wine; cigarettes; car, motorcycle, and boat; oil and gas for vehicles; utility bills – electricity, tap water, telephone and internet are not covered; long-term service contract beyond January 1-February 15 this year; non-life insurance premium. Promoting community-made products Shoppers buying goods and services from businesses that are not registered in the VAT system will be issued an e-receipt. Eligible products are: books, newspapers and magazines; electronic books, newspapers and magazines; products of OTOP which are registered with the Community Development Department, as the government wants to promote village-made products. 16. An unusual incident occurred at Wat Wang Boraphet in Uthai Thani province, where the skull of Jamrus Pachuthai, an 80 year old woman, remained almost intact after her cremation, while the rest of her body turned to ashes. This peculiar event took place at 4.30pm yesterday (January 8). The abbot of the temple, Phra Khru Uthitthamakhun, recounted that after the cremation ceremony, a temple assistant was preparing the ashes for a merit-making ceremony. They were surprised to find the skull of Jamrus almost fully preserved amidst the ashes. The abbot speculated that this could be due to her regular acts of merit-making during her lifetime, resulting in this unusual phenomenon. Sakorn Pachuthai, Jamrus’s husband, also expressed his surprise at the sight of the skull amid the ashes. He described it as if someone had placed the skull in the middle of the ashes, with the eye sockets and mouth still intact despite the flames. He added that his wife had been a strong woman who regularly visited the temple to make merit. On the day the ashes were brought home, Sakorn related a strange occurrence. As the ashes were being carried into the house, dogs around the house started howling, alarming their daughter and leading her to wonder if her mother had returned. by Samantha Rose Photo courtesy of Sanook -- ASEAN NOW 2024-01-09 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
