  4. By Kittisak Phalaharn Pattaya—At 3:00 AM, on January 6th, 2023, Pattaya police officers received a report of a Russian person falling from an eighth-story condominium in the Jomtien area, Pattaya. The police and rescue teams were dispatched to the incident scene and found the body of Mr. AP, a 42-year-old Russian man, who had fallen from the 8th floor. The police enclosed the area to prevent non-relevant individuals from interfering in the scene. The victim’s full name was withheld pending contact of his family and embassy. The condo name was withheld due to the ongoing investigation. According to a report by the police, Mr. Uaychai Phuengpisawong, a 52-year-old security officer at the condominium, said that at 1:00 AM the deceased shook the entrance gate of the condo and was acting erratic. After security guards were called by concerned residents, AP climbed the condo wall in an attempt to flee and vanished. 13. PM Prioritizes Higher Education and Innovation by Tanakorn Sangiam BANGKOK (NNT) - The Prime Minister recently chaired the first meeting this year of the National Council for Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation. 14. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Prime Minister recently chaired the first meeting this year of the National Council for Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing education to create a highly skilled workforce, meeting current market demands and elevating the country’s income levels. The Prime Minister noted that from meetings with international investors, a primary factor influencing their investment decisions is the skill level of the workforce. However, Thailand faces challenges, particularly in industries related to science, engineering, and mathematics, with workers often unable to meet expectations. He referenced the 2022-2023 university rankings, where Thai educational institutions ranked lower than their counterparts in neighboring countries. He thus expressed his expectation for Thai universities to develop curricula, improve facilities, familiarize students with new technologies and advanced programs, and collaborate with the private sector and foreign universities. The Prime Minister opined that startups, relying on creativity and in-depth knowledge, are another business sector capable of generating income now and in the future. He believes Thai youth have the potential to become "unicorns" if universities can discover and nurture their creative thinking. Prime Minister Srettha stressed that the government already has supportive measures, such as the Matching Fund, to attract major companies to invest in Thai startups. Regarding future research, he expects to see studies aligning with government policies, focusing on electric vehicles, nitrogen energy, clean energy, renewable energy, green economy, AI technology, and computer-related technology, becoming a technology hub and a future center for food technology. by Tanakorn Sangiam Source: NNT 2024-01-06 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 16. Thailand’s Commerce Ministry announced today that the country’s headline consumer price index (CPI) experienced a 0.83% decrease in December compared to the same period a year earlier. This figure is a steeper drop than the 0.44% year-on-year decrease seen in the preceding month. Contrasting with the anticipated 0.30% fall for December as per a Reuters poll, the actual result was a more significant decrease. Additionally, the core CPI recorded an upward motion of 0.58% year-on-year in December. This figure narrowly missed the forecasted increase of 0.60%. The data underscores the ongoing economic challenges faced by Thailand, particularly in the wake of global financial disruptions. While the numbers may paint a bleak picture, they also present an opportunity for the country to reassess and adapt its economic strategies to counter such volatilities. by Alex Morgan Photo via Freepik Full story: The Thaiger 2024-01-06 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 18. In the wake of recent floods in Narathiwat Province, an alarming discovery was made as a substantial number of logs were swept down from Mount Mo Tae, situated within the Sipo Waterfall National Park. The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) stepped in to conduct a thorough investigation following the event that left 173 logs scattered across two primary locations in the region. The NACC’s Narathiwat Provincial Office, led by Director Acharn Suwandara, alongside a team comprising Forest Resource Management Office No. 13 and the Forest Protection Unit at No. 2 (Rue So), has been meticulously examining the affected areas since yesterday, January 4. Their inquiry is focused on the Ban Braeng area in Marue Botok Subdistrict, Rangae District, and the vicinity of Ban Uyi in Lalo Subdistrict, Rueso District. Both sites are in proximity to Khao Mo Tae and have experienced significant environmental disturbances. Initial findings suggest that intense rainfall triggered soil erosion on the mountain slopes, leading to a deluge of rocks, sand, and various species of trees descending into the low-lying areas. The force of the water was so powerful that it inflicted substantial infrastructure damage; in Ban Braeng, a water dam and concrete roadways were found to be severely compromised. Similarly, the Ban U Yi water barrier dam suffered extensive damage, impacting the surrounding agricultural land and the livelihoods of residents. by Sugandhi Batra PHOTO: via RNZ Full story: The Thaiger 2024-01-06 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. The company outlined their investment criteria in a recent statement to the Thai stock exchange, stating that any new venture must align with its strategic business plan, be reasonably priced, and have optimal timing. The company made it clear that Central Group, its parent company and the majority owner of Selfridges since November, has not approached them about this investment. This response came in the wake of reports suggesting that Central Group is actively seeking new investment partners, potentially due to a looming financial crisis at Selfridges, reported Bangkok Post. 22. Imron Yusoh’s voice cracks with weariness as he speaks. “Seven members of my family have been killed in violence – shot or bombed. Yet, the authorities still suspect me, as if we who suffer the most are somehow complicit,” the resident of Yala, one of the provinces in Thailand’s Deep South, told BenarNews. Thursday marked the 20th anniversary of the start of a series of violent events in 2004 that convulsed this mainly Muslim Malay border region and reignited a separatist insurgency, which dates back to the 1960s and has no end in sight. Twenty years on, the region remains heavily militarized and there is a general mood of suspicion and deep skepticism that peace talks being pursued by Thailand’s new government will achieve any breakthrough after a decade of fruitless efforts. The conflict has left thousands dead and displaced countless others since that watershed year of 2004. And for Imron and others in the region, the constant state of surveillance breeds distrust and hinders reconciliation. “I doubt next year, the 21st anniversary of the conflict, will bring any resolution,” Imron said. “Villagers endure constant hardship and suspicion from authorities. Peace talks haven’t yielded tangible results, yet I cling to the hope that they might someday.” On Jan. 4, 2004, a raid and theft of more than 400 weapons from the Pileng military camp by rebels in Narathiwat and subsequent events marked a turning point that led to a surge in the deployment of security forces in the Deep South. Over 75,000 soldiers, police and volunteer guards descended upon the region to quell violence from a series of incidents that followed the raid on the weapons depot. by Mariyam Ahmad and Nontarat Phaicharoen Pattani, Thailand, and Bangkok Top picture: Thai school children visit Krue Se Mosque in Pattani to learn about the history of conflict in the region, Dec. 25, 2018.
