Consumer Confidence Rises After New Government Formation
Thai consumer confidence surges as new government takes charge, but high living costs cast a shadow by Alex Morgan Photo by Marek Okon on Unsplash. Last month saw a rise in consumer confidence following the swift establishment of a new government, although concerns about the high cost of living and the sluggish global economy remain. The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) revealed that the consumer confidence index rose to 56.9 from 55.6 in July. This uplift was attributed to the easing of concerns over delays in the formation of a new government and political stability. Thanavath Phonvichai, president of the UTCC, said that consumers are regaining confidence in the new government’s ability to boost economic recovery, particularly following Srettha Thavisin’s appointment as the 30th prime minister of Thailand. “The overall political situation in Thailand appears to be stabilising as political divisions seem to be easing leading to increased consumer confidence across the board.” Full story: The Thaiger 2023-09-16 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Thai PM says he opposes the recreational use of cannabis
Thai PM extinguishes ‘high’ hopes for recreational cannabis, prioritises medicinal path by Atima Homtientong Picture courtesy of Bangkok Post. Disagreeing with the notion of recreational cannabis use, the Prime Minister of Thailand indicated that his administration would instead continue to focus on the medicinal usage of the plant. Thai PM Srettha Thavisin, who additionally performs the role of the nation’s Finance Minister, shared his stance with the media today, Friday, September 15. Despite this, the cannabis industry in Thailand is poised to achieve a valuation of US$1.2 billion (42.9 billion baht) in the coming years. The approval of the drug’s consumption and cultivation last year spurred the emergence of thousands of new enterprises. In a bid to stimulate consumption and expenditure, PM Srettha, a former business magnate, revealed a series of economic plans earlier this week. These are designed to counteract the sluggish recovery currently experienced by Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy. Digital wallet and debt moratoria schemes should not be for all : BoT governor
Bank of Thailand Governor Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput has suggested that the “digital wallet” scheme should target certain people, instead of all Thais who are 16 and older, while debt a moratorium for all indebted farmers should also be selective. He explained that not everyone who is eligible for the 10,000 baht under the digital wallet scheme needs the money and a lot of money will be saved if it is targeted towards people who are in need of it. Regarding a debt moratorium for farmers, Sethaput said that there are many who are capable of servicing their debts and the best way to help these farmers is to help them settle their debts or to incentivise them so they can carry on servicing them. He admitted that there are also many farmers who are heavily indebted and a debt moratorium, which is just temporary relief, will not help them settle their chronic indebtedness. Credit: Matichon JUST AS Education Minister Permpoon Chidchob moved to relaunch the Yingluck Shinawatra government’s project of distributing free tablet computers to all students and teachers nationwide a large number of teachers pointed out that this scheme was not that effective when carried out almost a decade ago and it would be better to use the budget to hire more teaching staff, Amarin TV said today (Sep. 15). Permpoon, from Bhumjaithai Party, announced the revival of this project when outlining his “Study Well, Be Happy” policy to officials at this ministry with this being divided into two parts – education for excellence and education for stability of life. Also included in his policy is to provide teaching equipment and welfare with teachers and students across the country to get one tablet computer each. Among the teachers who disagreed with the revival of this project is Ms. Orawan Khunsrirod, a professional-level teacher at Ban Sa Ngam School, Mueang district, Nakhon Sawan province, who said her school still has tablet computers that were distributed during the Yingluck Shinawatra government which are not usable and kept in a storeroom. All the police officers who were at the house of murder suspect, Praween Chanklai, aka “Kamnan Nok”, when one highway police officer was killed and another was injured, failed to tell the truth about the incident when they gave their statements to investigators. Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn, the deputy national police chief, told the media late last night (Thursday) that investigators have scrutinised all the files recovered from 13 CCTV servers at the house, compared them with the officers’ testimonies and discovered that they conflict. “From the files, we saw what the officers were doing before and after the shooting. We saw who lied. To sum up, none of them told the truth,” said Surachate. He said that some of the officers ran away after the shooting, while the others failed to apprehend the perpetrators, adding that there were many people at Praween’s house on the night of September 6, both police and civilians, and there were many firearms.
