Minister cited by the Corruption Commission for ‘minor’ role in Boss Vorayuth corruption scandal
The lack of action in the ‘Boss’ Vorayuth affair undermines confidence in the Rule of Law in Thailand. This is a notorious case that has received international press coverage because of the high-profile nature of the accused and the circumstances surrounding the death of a policeman on duty in September 2012. It remains to be seen if the new government of Srettha Thavisin will take up the issue or if it will continue to be ignored. Amid a huge scandal and corruption case brewing over the operations of the Royal Thai Police in Nakhon Pathom, last week, the Prime Minister’s Office was also reminded of the ongoing controversy over the failure to arrest and prosecute the heir to the Red Bull fortune, a long-running sore which has significantly undermined confidence among the Thai public in the rule of law within the Kingdom. The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), last week, sent a report implicating the newly appointed Minister of Education, Police General Permpoon Chidchob, for a ‘minor’ role in the controversy from his time as a senior policeman during the affair. It has also come to light that Mr Vorayuth Yoovidhya or ‘Boss’ is currently not featured on the Interpol Red Notice list of fugitives wanted by authorities in Thailand despite being placed on it by the Royal Thai Police in October 2020. On Wednesday, the Secretary General of the National Anti-Corruption Commission, Mr Niwatchai Kasemmongkol revealed that a file had been sent to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin concerning individuals examined by the Commission when dealing with the controversy over the Red Bull scion Vorayuth Yoovidhya or ‘Boss’, who fled Thailand in 2017 ahead of criminal charges and continues to evade arrest and prosecution for the killing of 47-year-old Police Sergeant Wichian Klanprasert on the Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok in the early hours of September 3rd, 2012. by James Morris and Son Nguyen TOP picture: New Minister of Education Police General Permpoon Chidchob (centre right) Full story: Thai Examiner 2023-09-19 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Police Hospital Doctors Suspected Of Unethically Keeping ‘Sickly’ Thaksin From Jail
DOCTORS AT POLICE HOSPITAL have been suspected of compromising their professional ethics to keep “sickly” de facto Pheu Thai boss Thaksin Shinawatra literally away from prison despite his one-year jail sentence. The so-called Students and People’s Network for Thailand Reform today (Sep.18) called on police chief Pol.Gen.Damrongsak Kittiprapat to promptly find out whether the doctors at Police Hospital taking care of Thaksin might probably compromise their ethical norms to literally keep the “sickly” deposed prime minister from jail. Pichit Chaimongkol, leader of the network, said the doctors might probably not only compromise their professionalism but the country’s judicial integrity by letting the de facto Pheu Thai boss stay at Police Hospital longer than necessary, thus keeping him from being put behind bars. Thaksin Could Possibly Be Freed On Parole After 6 Months In Jail By Thai Newsroom Reporters Photo: Thai Rath DE FACTO PHEU THAI BOSS Thaksin Shinawatra could possibly be released on parole despite a one-year jail sentence on condition that he has served at least six months behind bars, a government official said today (Sep.18). Corrections Department spokesman Sitthi Sutheewong confirmed that the deposed prime minister who had been earlier sentenced in absentia to eight years in jail and then given royal pardon to have it curtailed to only one year could not ask for an immediate release on parole until he has practically served a minimum of six months in jail as provided by law. Releases on parole may be granted for inmates who are either over 70 years old or have critical illnesses after they have served one-third of their jail sentence whilst the 74-year-old “sickly” Thaksin could apparently fall into both categories, according to the department’s spokesman. Thai business department investigates 439 firms for potential nomination violations
In a move to suppress the ‘grey’ market in the fiscal year 2023, the Business Development Department (BDD) investigated 439 companies, suspecting them of acting as nominees for foreign corporations. Interestingly, legal entities potentially involved in nominee activities were discovered in Chiang Mai and Chon Buri provinces. The BDD Deputy Director-General, Jitakorn Wongkhatekorn, revealed that the agency inspected three targeted groups of businesses suspected of being nominees. These included tourism and related businesses, real estate, and hotels and resorts. The provinces subjected to this scrutiny included Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, Surat Thani, Chon Buri, Rayong, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Phetchaburi, and Bangkok. This was undertaken in cooperation with several entities, including the Tourism Department, the Special Investigations Department, the Tourist Police Bureau, and the Immigration Bureau. Jitakorn reported preliminary findings pointing to legal entities in Chiang Mai and Chon Buri engaging in potential nominee activities. Two Thai shareholders were found in 269 companies across various sectors. These companies were engaged in service businesses, real estate, tourism-related businesses, hotel and resort operations, and an array of other businesses such as retail, transport, and agriculture. by Alex Morgan Top Photo by Scott Graham on Unsplash. Monsoon mayhem: TMD forecasts heavy rains for 51 provinces, including Bangkok
The Thai Meteorological Department issued a warning for heavy rains caused by monsoons affecting 51 provinces across the country, including Bangkok, with 70% of the areas expected to be hit hard. The warning, issued today, September 18, forecasts continuous rain for the next 24 hours due to a moderate monsoon trough passing through the northern and upper northeastern regions. The monsoon is entering a low-pressure area along the coast of northern Vietnam combined with a moderate southwest monsoon that is covering the Andaman Sea, the lower northeastern region, the central region, the eastern region, the southern region, and the Gulf of Thailand. This will result in continuous rainfall, with heavy rainfalls in some areas of the northern, northeastern and central regions including Bangkok and its vicinity. The public is urged to be cautious of heavy rainfall and accumulated rain which could lead to flash floods and forest runoff, particularly in areas near mountain slopes, waterways, and low-lying areas. Also, precautions should be taken when travelling through areas with thunderstorms. In the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, the sea is moderate. For the Andaman Sea from the provinces of Ranong upwards, waves are 1 to 2 metres high and more than 2 metres high in areas with thunderstorms. For the Andaman Sea from Phang Nga downwards and the Gulf of Thailand, waves are about 1 metre high and 1 to 2 metres high in areas with thunderstorms. It is advised that sailors in these areas navigate with caution and avoid sailing in areas with thunderstorms. by Atima Homtientong Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Trading doubts for trust: Thai Trade representative addresses past controversy
The newly designated Thai trade representative recently responded to lingering media scepticism regarding her background and qualifications. Nalinee Taveesin insisted that any past misunderstandings had been resolved. This was a reference to her blacklisting by the United States Department of the Treasury approximately ten years ago. This was due to her alleged business connections with the then-sanctioned regime of Zimbabwean president, Robert Mugabe. The sanctions against her were imposed after she was appointed as a trade representative for the Yingluck Shinawatra administration. Refusing to step down amid the allegations in January 2012, Nalinee maintained that her interactions with the Mugabe family were purely social. A complaint was subsequently lodged with the Office of Ombudsman, which, after reviewing her case, found nothing incriminating against her. by Atima Homtientong Picture courtesy of Bangkok Post.
