Suicide rate in Thailand hits half-decade peak despite prevention efforts
Suicide numbers in Thailand have been on a steady incline over the last five years, peaking at 4,800 lives lost in the previous year, as reported by the Department of Mental Health (DMH). Yesterday marked World Suicide Prevention Day, a global initiative spearheaded by the World Health Organisation (WHO) that took place yesterday. This event brings together international efforts to combat suicide. In response, various workers from Thailand’s public health sector, including teams from the DMH and the National Health Security Office (NHSO), united their forces to contribute to this prevention campaign. The concept of World Suicide Prevention Day emerged following a distressing report by the WHO, which revealed that globally, suicides claim a minimum of one million lives each year. This translates to one life lost every 40 seconds. Suicide has now climbed into the top 10 causes of death worldwide, with men being three times more likely to succeed in their suicide attempts compared to women. by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of Freepik Full story: https://thethaiger.com/news/national/thailands-suicide-rate-hits-half-decade-peak-despite-prevention-efforts -- The Thaiger 2023-09-11 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. CCIB nabs five in 2.7 billion baht cryptocurrency scam
The Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) has apprehended four individuals from China and one from Laos in relation to a cryptocurrency scam, resulting in a loss of over 2.7 billion baht. The fraudulent scheme operated via an investment platform called bchgloballtd.com and has reportedly deceived at least 3,280 people. The victims, who began stepping forward in November last year, were tricked into investing in gold and the cryptocurrency USDT. A thorough investigation by the CCIB revealed that many orchestrators of the cryptocurrency scam were also involved with other deceptive platforms. International law enforcement agencies, including Homeland Security Investigation, collaborated to secure arrest warrants for the five suspects. The quintet is being held accountable for collusion in committing transnational crimes, public fraud, disseminating false information into computer systems, and money laundering. Legal proceedings against them were initiated by the Office of the Attorney General on August 10. Subsequently, on September 4, the Anti-Money Laundering Office seized their properties, valued at 585 million baht. by Mitch Connor Photo: analyticsinsight.net Full story: https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/crime/ccib-nabs-five-in-2-7-billion-baht-cryptocurrency-scam-affecting-over-3000 -- The Thaiger 2023-09-11 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. In a bid to enhance naval cooperation, the Thai Navy and the The People's Liberation Army Navy of China have conducted joint training exercises, known as Blue Strike 2023, in the Gulf of Thailand. As part of this exercise, the Chinese navy deployed the CNS Chang Cheng submarine to participate. The primary objectives were to familiarize the Thai naval forces with submarine inspections from the surface and underwater, as well as tracking submarine movements using sonar. This training aimed to boost confidence and provide valuable experience for Thai naval personnel with limited exposure to submarines over the past 86 years, reported Siam Rath. Picture: Siam Rath The Chinese naval contingent, comprising four ships, arrived at the Sattahip Naval Base in Chonburi on August 31, 2023. Civilian defence minister to navigate Thai military reforms amid coalition challenges
The newly appointed Defence Minister, Sutin Klungsang, is in the spotlight as he is expected to navigate through various challenges within the military while maintaining stability within the Pheu Thai-led coalition government. As the first civilian to take the defence minister position without also holding the role of the prime minister, Sutin is expected to manage military reform, the southern unrest and the military’s relations with other regional countries. The appointment of a civilian to oversee military affairs has been evaluated as an attempt by the Pheu Thai-led government’s de facto leader, the imprisoned former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, to mitigate the military’s potential threat to the government and to stave off any future coups. Thaksin’s administration was overthrown in a military coup on September 19, 2006, and his younger sister Yingluck Shinawatra’s government faced a similar fate on May 22, 2014. Thaksin, sceptical of the military due to his past experience, is said to be promoting civilian oversight of the armed forces and aiming to reduce the influence of the three brothers in arms, referring to former Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon, and former Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda. by Mitch Connor TOP: Thailand's Defense Minister Sutin Klangsang arrives at the government house in Bangkok, Thailand, Tuesday, Sept. 5. Paetongtarn Shinawatra is expected to be a candidate for the leadership of the Pheu Thai Party when the party meets in a General Assembly on October 16th to elect new party executives. There may be some opposition to her candidacy. Paetongtarn Shinawatra was a consistent favourite choice for PM among the public up to the point when Pheu Thai broke off its coalition government agreement with the Move Forward Party in August this year. The decision is believed to have cost the party heavily in terms of public support. However, her emergence as party leader after October 16th may herald further significant political developments in 2024. Despite not being among the list of cabinet ministers in the new government of Srettha Thavisin, Thaksin Shinawatra’s youngest daughter Paetongtarn looks set to be elected as the leader of the Pheu Thai Party on October 16th. There is also speculation that the 37-year-old who in recent times was the country’s most popular choice for Prime Minister may yet emerge as a contender for the role going forward. Paetongtarn Shinawatra is highly tipped to become the next leader of the ruling Pheu Thai Party following the resignation of Dr Cholnan Srikaew in recent weeks before he was appointed Minister for Public Health in the government of Srettha Thavisin. by Carla Boonkong & Pranee O' Connor Full story: https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2023/09/10/paetongtarn-shinawatra-to-respark-her-political-career-pheu-thai-leader/ -- Thai Examiner 2023-09-11 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Thailand’s transport sector set for major 29.7 billion baht upgrade
A bright future is on the horizon for Thailand’s transport and logistics system. The Transport Minister, Suriya Juangroongruangkit, has recently outlined his ambitious plans for the country’s railways and maritime sectors. Revealed during his inaugural speech, these policies are set to be formally announced next week. Suriya believes that by focusing on these areas, Thailand can significantly enhance its competitiveness in logistics, a sector brimming with growth potential. Suriya’s key priority is the timely completion of the country’s double-track rail projects. These projects are crucial to the nation’s infrastructure, with one of the most significant being the 29.7-billion-baht upgrade between Khon Kaen and Nong Khai provinces. This project is of such importance that Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has expressed plans to visit the site in the future. In addition, the Minister has plans to accommodate the burgeoning interest of airlines wanting to operate in Thailand. His strategy involves requesting the Royal Thai Air Force to release unused flight slots at airports managed by the Airports of Thailand (AoT). This move could potentially lead to an additional 100-150 commercial flights per day, a significant boost that can prove to be crucial, especially with the high season on the horizon. by Top Picture by Ionut Dabija's Images Full story: https://thethaiger.com/news/pattaya/thailands-transport-sector-set-for-major-29-7-billion-baht-upgrade -- Thaiger 2023-09-11 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. (Photo by Lillian SUWANRUMPHA / AFP) / To go with 'THAILAND-REFUGEES-RIGHTS-MIGRATION,FOCUS' by Lisa MARTIN and Sarah LAI Picture courtesy of AFP Bangkok is home to a church where Vietnamese refugees find a temporary haven from lives fraught with fear of arrest or deportation. This is because Thailand, having not signed up for the UN Refugee Convention, does not have a system in place to differentiate between refugees and other migrants, resulting in thousands of individuals living under the radar. Soon, a revamped system will be implemented, designed to distinguish between individuals who would face danger if returned to their homelands and others who are in Thailand illegally. However, this new system is being greeted with unease by refugees and rights activists alike, who fear it could be misused or even lead to expedited deportations. Sung Seo Hoa, a Vietnamese pastor and member of Vietnam’s Hmong minority, expressed these fears. Having fled from pressure from the communist government in his homeland 12 years ago, he now leads a life of fear. “We are afraid of police arrest, being put in jail and deported back to Vietnam. That’s what we are very afraid of, 24 hours a day.” He does not plan to go through the new screening process due to the risks involved. by Neill Fronde Full story: https://thethaiger.com/news/national/thailands-new-refugee-screening-system-stirs-fear-among-asylum-seekers -- Full story 2023-09-11 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
