Thai satellite’s stellar journey: THEOS-2 ready to reach for the stars
Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) confirmed that the Thailand Earth Observation Satellite 2 (THEOS-2) is set to soar into space next month. The satellite reached Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana, South America, after a safe journey from Toulouse, France. This news came to light when GISTDA announced the upcoming launch on their official Facebook page, adding that THEOS-2, constructed by Airbus Defence and Space, would be undergoing final inspections before its attachment to the launch vehicle. THEOS-2 is the successor to THEOS-1, also known as Thaichote, which was launched on October 1, 2008. As THEOS-1 nears the end of its operational lifespan, THEOS-2 is ready to take the baton. With a weight of 425 kilogrammes, the new satellite is equipped to generate high-resolution images with a resolution of 50 centimetres. by Top Illustration of the THEOS-2 Satellite | Photo courtesy of Spaceth.co Full story: https://thethaiger.com/news/national/thailands-theos-2-satellite-prepares-for-october-launch-from-french-guiana -- The Thaiger 2023-09-09 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Thaksin may be released on October 13th as his prison status becomes a growing political target
Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra may be released from prison by either October 13th or December 5th as his incarceration becomes a lightning rod for political attacks on the new government of Srettha Thavisin. Even before this, the former premier, pardoned by the Thai King on August 31st, may be eligible to be sent home. Last week, Deputy Director of the Corrections Department Narong Juisei refused to answer pointed questioning by reporters on Mr Thaksin’s case. Former Future Forward Party Secretary-General Piyabutr Saengkanokkul and now Progressive Movement leader this week called on the newly sworn-in government to look at a wider amnesty for all political prisoners as part of an extended national reconciliation process. There is mounting speculation that former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra may be released from prison in the coming weeks possibly as early as October 13th. It comes as his seemingly preferential treatment as a prison inmate threatens to draw further political attention with a key leader of the Progressive Movement, this week, calling for an amnesty in the kingdom for all prisoners serving sentences linked with political activities. There is heightened speculation that former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was granted a pardon and commutation of his sentence by His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn on Thursday, August 31st, reducing his prison term from eight years to one year, may be released from prison as soon as October 13th or December 5th. by Joseph O' Connor Full story: https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2023/09/08/thaksin-may-be-released-on-october-13th/ -- Thai Examiner 2023-09-09 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Hearsay Over Paetongtarn Taking Over Pheu Thai Dampened
DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER-CUM-Commerce Minister Bhumtham Wechayachai today (Sep.8) dampened speculation that de facto Pheu Thai boss Thaksin Shinawatra’s daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra will eventually take over the leadership of the core coalition partner. Paetongtarn who had run among a trio of Pheu Thai candidates for head of a post-election government apart from real estate tycoon-turned-prime minister Srettha Thavisin and Pheu Thai MP Chaikasem Nitisiri has been more or less expected to become party leader as far as her father is concerned. Bhumtham was responding to hearsay that the daughter of the former prime minister, who has reportedly had “illnesses” upon return from 17 years in self-exile abroad and been staying under close medical care at Police Hospital since late last month, will assume the top Pheu Thai leadership in place of Public Health Minister Chonlanan Srikaew who had earlier resigned as leader of the party, albeit viewed as merely nominal status. Will new foreign policy tilt away from China towards the West?
The new government is expected to pursue a foreign policy focused on yielding economic dividends, with proactive diplomacy targeted at securing more market access around the globe. The government of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin might reposition the country’s stance to better cope with geopolitical conflicts and competitions. The issue of economy is important for foreign policy, but security matters as well, according to Professor Ukrist Pathmanand from Chulalongkorn University’s Institute of Asian Studies. He, however, added that Srettha’s Cabinet has no minister or deputy keen on international security. The prime minister himself and Foreign Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Kukara have solid backgrounds in business and economic relations, but not security issues. Sutin Klangsang, who became only the fifth civilian to run the Defense Ministry, also has no experience in security and military affairs, he said. Thaksin paradox to haunt many
In Parliament, the newly-formed Srettha government stands to face several explosive issues, but the controversial treatment of Thaksin Shinawatra is not one of them. In fact, treacherous as it is, the former prime minister won’t be able to find a better political landscape to come back to. How the government has been composed is good for him for obvious reasons, as it has brought together his loyal friends and former rivals. “Reconciliation” can always be the main excuse for leniency that appeared impossible a short while ago but seemingly blatant at the moment. The opposition’s structure is deceptively bad for Thaksin. The bloc is led by the Move Forward Party which is hell-bent on avenging a Pheu Thai “betrayal”. Also in the opposition camp is the Democrat Party, his long-time enemy who must be strongly motivated and equipped with all kinds of information. The two opposition parties, however, can cancel each other out. The Democrats always advocated, silently or else, what happened to Thaksin in the past because they viewed him as too corrupt and powerful to be dealt with orthodoxly. Move Forward, on the other hand, viewed action against him as totally undemocratic and hence unacceptable.
