  6. Thailand’s potential to expand its ‘pink economy’ through the attraction of international LGBTQ+ retirees was the highlight of a recent conference held in Bangkok. Dr Chaiwat Songsiriphan, who is the founder and medical director of the Safe Clinic, emphasised that Thailand’s high tolerance for gender diversity could make it an ideal retirement destination for the LGBTQ+ community. He further noted that the country is already recognised for its LGBTQ+ tourism, parties and nightlife entertainment. However, Dr Chaiwat highlighted that to truly become an LGBTQ+ retirement haven, there is a need for more healthcare specialists and clinics focusing on HIV and STDs. The availability of specialised healthcare units for the LGBTQ+ community is currently lacking. He asserted that the need for ease of access to antiretroviral drugs within the public healthcare system, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to prevent HIV infection, is paramount. by Mitch Connor Photo: Freepik Full story: https://thethaiger.com/news/national/thailand-eyes-growth-in-pink-economy-by-attracting-international-lgbtq-retirees -- The Thaiger 2023-09-04 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 20. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and Defence Minister Sutin Klungsang had an informal meeting over lunch today (Sunday) with the military’s new top brass for familiarisation and an exchange of views. The top brass were the newly appointed commanders of the three armed forces and the supreme commander, who will assume their posts on October 1st. They were Supreme Commander Gen Songwit Noonpakdee, Army Commander-in-Chief Gen Charoenchai Hinthao, Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Adung Pan-iam and Air Force Commander-in-Chief ACM Punpakdee Pattanakul. An informed government source said that, since both Srettha and Sutin are civilians with no military background, they want to receive input directly from the top brass, before the coalition parties’ policies on military affairs are incorporated in the government’s policy statement, to be delivered in parliament this week. Earlier, military leaders had expressed concerns over some of the policies announced by the Pheu Thai and Move Forward parties during their election campaigns, which included the scrapping of mandatory conscription, substantial defence budget cuts and the dissolution of the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC). 21. Thailand may grant visa exemption for Chinese tourists in October The Thai government is likely to introduce visa exemption for Chinese tourists in an effort to boost arrivals over yearend, as arrivals during the first seven months of this year have fallen short of target. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports estimates that between 5 and 7 million Chinese tourists would have visited Thailand from January to July, but only two million arrived, largely due to the economic slowdown in China, forcing many Chinese to be more careful in their spending. According to Thai travel agencies, news, including fake news in Chinese media, about their compatriots being preyed upon by Chinese gangs in Thailand, have raised concern among tourists about their safety. Also, many Chinese have chosen to travel within their country, which is far cheaper.
