  7. The leader of the Move Forward Party, which won the most seats in the May 14 general election, says there was no reason to block his re-nomination as PM at his second attempt. Pita Limjaroenrat says his name could have been re-submitted for a second vote in the joint sitting of parliament and that there was no need to wait for a court ruling. On July 19, the re-submission of Pita’s name for the PM job was rejected by MPs and senators, who cited a House regulation that prohibits a previously-rejected motion being re-submitted in the same parliamentary session, unless there has been a change in circumstances. Those who opposed Pita’s name being re-submitted claimed that, as he failed to get enough votes the first time round on July 13, the regulation should be enforced. 17. Thailand’s Minister of Digital Economy and Society (DES) strongly urged banks to halt unauthorised transactions following a request by their customers. This suggests an effort to mitigate the financial damages inflicted by online fraudsters on unsuspecting victims. The directive comes in light of the recent enactment of the Royal Decree on Cyber Crime Prevention and Suppression, which came into effect on March 17. The new regulation grants banking institutions the authority to suspend accounts that are suspected to be conduits of online fraudsters. Importantly, this action can be taken without requiring an official order by law enforcement agencies or the affected clients. Hence, DES Minister Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn highlighted the need for banks to devise mechanisms that aid clients who seemingly have been the victims of scamming. His admonition arrived following the unsettling account narrated by noted TV news anchor Paweenamai Baikhloi, who spoke about losing over 1 million baht to online fraudsters who posed as officials from the Department of Land. Confirming these details, Paweenamai submitted her complaint to the Phasi Charoen Police on August 9. by Mitch Connor TOP: Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn, Ministry of Digital Economy and Society. 20. In a move geared towards promoting Thai tourism, the government has implemented policy changes that lessen the rules for obtaining a tourist visa and slashes approval time for Chinese visitors. Chinese travellers emerged as the majority of international arrivals over the past week, the deputy government spokeswoman, Rachada Dhnadirek, confirmed yesterday. Statistics displayed that 95,581 visitors from China arrived in Thailand during this period, far outstripping the numbers from Malaysia (73,810), South Korea (37,754), India (27,707), and Vietnam (25,717). In line with the renewed visa norms, Chinese tourists applying for Thai visas will now need to submit only six forms of documentation. These include their passport, three photographs, an airline ticket, proof of their accommodation in Thailand, evidence of permanent residence, and financial statements. Rachada pointed out that this adjustment will cut down processing time from two weeks to one week. by Mitch Connor TOP: Chinese tourists in Thailand, courtesy of Taweechai Tawatpakorn, Bangkok Post. 22. Eight cases of infection by the new coronavirus Omicron EG.5.1 variant, codenamed Aris, have been detected in Thailand. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recently classified the variant as being “of interest”, which does not seem to pose more of a threat to the public than the other variants. Dr. Wasun Chantratita, chief of the Centre for Medical Genomics at the Faculty of Medicines, Mahidol University, said, however, that the eight cases of Aris were detected in the past three months and the variant is capable of spreading about 1% faster than XBB.1.66, the current dominant variant. He said that the public should be aware of the new variant, but there is no reason to panic, adding that the resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic in South Korea is, however, an indication that Thailand should be prepared, prompting the Centre for Medical Genomics to resume genome sequencing of coronavirus samples from patients.
