  2. Led by political activist Sombat Boonngamanong, protesters gathered at Asoke junction in Bangkok at about 5pm today (Saturday) before marching to Ratchaprasong intersection for a rally. Before the march, Sombat told the media that the protest is intended to send a message to the senators, after they ignored the mandate the people gave the Move Forward in the May 14th general election. During the march, the protesters shouted the names of Move Forward party and its leader, Pita Limjaroenrat. Some blew horns, supplied by Sombat who says he bought them at Khlong Thom market. 5. Built in 1890, Bangkok Remand Prison is now poised to receive Thailand’s best-known and most popular convict – Thaksin Shinawatra. Former prime minister Thaksin, now 74, has lived in self-imposed exile since 2008, avoiding accumulated jail sentences amounting to 10 years behind bars. The Supreme Court has sentenced him in absentia to two years in jail for malfeasance in the government’s corruption-plagued lottery, three years for abuse of power in authorizing loans to the Import-Export Bank of Thailand, and five years for using nominees to disguise his controlling stake in Shin Corporation, which benefited from state contracts and tax cuts under his government. His scheduled return to the country on August 10 has thus sparked speculation that he may already have secured a deal for VIP treatment behind bars. Will he get 5-star luxury? Authorities insist Thaksin will not get preferential treatment and will be treated just like any other inmate under the law. The Bangkok Remand Prison would be his logical place of detention as it accepts male inmates from all parts of Bangkok, except Thon Buri and Min Buri, provided their jail sentences are no longer than 15 years. 16. In the first six months of this year, a modest increase in mortgage loans was recorded by banks as purchasing power of homebuyers took a hit due to ascending interest rates. Collectively, eight out of the ten SET-listed banks reported consolidated outstanding mortgages tallying 2.39 trillion baht as of June, marking a 1.04% rise from 2.37 trillion baht in December 2022. Among the five largest lenders in the country, Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) registered the most substantial growth rate of mortgage loan products at 2.69%. In stark contrast, the Bank of Ayudhya, marketed under the name Krungsri, reported a contraction of its mortgage loan products by 2.73% in the same timeframe. On the other hand, Land and Houses Bank (LH Bank) notched the highest mortgage loan growth rate during this particular period at 16.7%, with Kiatnakin Phatra Bank (KKP) coming in second at 7.12%. Banks usually assign a floating rate to mortgage loans during the fourth year of loan maturity, which means borrowers of these loan products could potentially be grappling with escalating interest rates. by Alex Morgan Photo by Towfiqu barbhuiya on Unsplash Full story: https://thethaiger.com/news/business/thai-banks-see-modest-rise-in-mortgage-loans -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-07-29 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Seah Kwang Peng/Singapore Press/AP CNN - Singapore on Friday hanged a woman convicted of attempting to traffic an ounce of heroin, the first execution of a female prisoner in nearly two decades in what human rights groups decried as a “grim milestone” for the city state and its notoriously harsh anti-drug laws.
