  5. Moving towards medical self-sustainability while concurrently conserving expenses, Thailand’s National Health Security Office (NHSO) has come up with an innovative solution. The NHSO has launched a new, locally made prosthetic fistula prepared from natural rubber for those participating in the Universal Healthcare (UHC) programme, also commonly referred to as the “gold card” scheme. This new initiative aims at reducing the medical budget, potentially saving over 540 million baht. A visit was made by Athaporn Limpanylers, the deputy secretary-general of the NHSO, to inspect these fistulas that would be provided to UHC participants in Yala and Songkhla. The inspection took place over two days, from July 18 to 19. This prosthetic fistula’s creation was spearheaded by the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) and was brought to Athaporn’s attention by Worawit Wanichsuwan, the leading research expert at the Medical Institute of Prince of Songkla University (PSU). The process, which used natural rubber sourced from the country’s southern region, took approximately six years to complete. Worawit points out that the decision to use the south’s natural rubber was a direct consequence of the compatibility of the regional environment and climate. by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post. The Thai Meteorology Department (TMD) warned of potential landslides in 45 provinces, including Bangkok. 7. Continual rainfall appears to be holding Thailand under its reign. The Thai Meteorology Department (TMD) warned of potential landslides in 45 provinces, including Bangkok. The precipitation accumulation could lead to sudden flooding and running forest water in the northern, eastern, and western southern provinces. Residents in these locations are advised to be cautious, especially around mountainous areas, or near river paths. According to the TMD, the southwesterly monsoons prevailing over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand, combined with a monsoon trough are primarily responsible for inclement weather. As the intensity of winds has increased, it has resulted in fairly rough sea conditions over the upper Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf, with wave heights estimated to be 2 to 3 metres. In stormy areas, waves may rise above 3 metres. Boats are cautioned to proceed with caution and to avoid traversing through stormy areas. Small boats in particular have been asked to remain ashore for the coming two days. The combination of weather patterns is predominantly due to the tropical storm Khanun existing over the Pacific Ocean. It is anticipated to gradually approach southern Okinawa of Japan and Taiwan’s upper region around today and tomorrow. Travellers to these regions are being advised to monitor weather conditions in advance of embarking on their journey, reported KhaoSod. The weather forecast for Thailand, starting at 6am today and until the same time tomorrow, indicates that the northern region will experience thunderstorms with 70% of the area seeing rainfall, and heavy downpours in certain parts. The weather pattern seems to be covering the provinces of Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Phrae, Nan, Uttaradit, Tak, and Phitsanulok. by Nattapong Westwood TOP: Spooky forest at dusk, ominous storm clouds gather generated by artificial intelligence Picture courtesy of vecstock, Freepik Full story: https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/weather/major-landslide-warning-for-45-provinces-as-thailand-braces-for-heavy-rainfall-due-to-tropical-storm -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-08-02 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 10. Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s planned homecoming after 15 years of self-imposed exile is generating a mix of excitement and concern in the Southeast Asian country stuck in a political deadlock for the past two months. Thaksin’s daughter, Paetongtarn, announced last week that her father was expected to return to Thailand on Aug. 10, as the Pheu Thai Party, the main political vehicle of the Shinawatra dynasty, seeks to form a new government after a general election in May. The announcement has provoked frenzied discussion about the fate awaiting the billionaire businessman, who fled Thailand in 2008 to escape a prison term for several different charges, including corruption and tax evasion. Many Thais are also speculating about what Thaksin’s arrival could mean for the country’s new government. “He is not a murderer – he should come back. Thaksin was only morally guilty and was at risk from dictatorial threats,” said Somsak Jatukam, 61, a taxi driver in Bangkok. by Nontarat Phaicharoen TOP: Pheu Thai Party supporter holds a placard with photographs of former Thai Prime Ministers Thaksin Shinawatra and Yingluck Shinawatra, during a party election campaign rally in Bangkok, April 28, 2023. 13. Tourism revival in Thailand risks airport slot overcrowding, suggests alternative options by Alex Morgan Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post In anticipation of the upcoming high season, Thailand’s Tourism Authority (TAT) has expressed concerns over the slot capacity at international airports. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1302334-tourism-revival-in-thailand-risks-airport-slot-overcrowding-suggests-alternative-options/
  14. In anticipation of the upcoming high season, Thailand’s Tourism Authority (TAT) has expressed concerns over the slot capacity at international airports. As more flights are set to resume, it is predicted that the country will receive around 8 million tourists this year, primarily derived from long-haul markets anticipating a significant tourism revival. The deputy governor for Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas of the TAT, Siripakorn Cheawsamoot, 42 years old, remains hopeful about the revival of international tourism. This optimism arises from the resumption of flights, which are currently at over 70% of the scale observed in 2019, he conveyed. The TAT’s expectations for overall foreign visitors this year include at least six million individuals from Europe, one million from the Americas, and an estimated half a million from the Middle East. Despite gradual improvements in ground handling matters, the main concerns now lie with the potential overcrowding of flight slots during the cool, or high season. The resumption is predicted to reach 85% of the 2019 level, due to a rising number of airlines applying for new slots at popular airports such as Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok and Phuket’s International Airport. by Alex Morgan Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post Full story: https://thethaiger.com/news/business/thailand-tourism-revival-risks-airport-slot-overcrowding-suggests-alternative-options -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-08-02 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
