Supporters of the Move Forward party have issued a statement, urging senators, who abstained from voting in last Thursday’s joint sitting of the parliament to select the prime minister, to resign and calling on the eight coalition parties to remain united to fulfill their pledges to the people. The statement also calls on the Thai people to join forces with them in their struggle to effect change in Thai society. The statement was read at the Bangkok Arts and Culture Centre at the end of the rally, initiated by Arnon Nampa, a member of Thai Lawyers for Human Rights and former leader of the anti-establishment Ratsadon group. In his speech to the demonstrators, Arnon warned that any coalition party which breaks away from the alliance will be branded “dictators”. 6. Analysis: Thailand’s Next Prime Minister Still Uncertain: Our Take on the Current Situation By Tanakorn Panyadee Thailand-Pita Limjaroenrat, Move Forward Party Prime Minister candidate, says if he and his party fails to form the next Thai government, he will give the chance to his coalition partners the Pheu Thai Party. 7. Thailand-Pita Limjaroenrat, Move Forward Party Prime Minister candidate, says if he and his party fails to form the next Thai government, he will give the chance to his coalition partners the Pheu Thai Party. On Saturday afternoon (July 15th) Pita released a video clip on social media. He said in the clip, “Thank you for 324 yes votes in Thai Parliament and putting faith in me becoming the 30th Thai prime minister, especially 13 yes votes from senators. I know that many of those senators have faced significant pressure for their decision to vote yes and listen to the people (Move Forward Party received the most seats in the recent Thai election, with Pheu Thai second.). The most important thing is to thank the people who have supported me and the Move Forward Party. I am sorry that we were still not successful in forming the next Thai government.” “We are the number one party who got the most votes from the Thai people in the general election. We have a responsibility to those people to form the government. We have tried every way possible to follow the spirit of true democracy in order to respect people’s votes. This is the fight of the Move Forward Party together with 14 million votes from Thai people to prove that these votes are the future of the country.” Pita continued in his video. Meanwhile, the Pheu Thai Party prime Prime Minister candidates are Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra, daughter of exiled Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, and Mr. Srettha Thavisin. There were rumors that Pheu Thai would put forward Srettha as a candidate if Pita could not form a government but Srettha has been mum on those rumors, stating that Pheu Thai currently fully supports Pita as the next PM. Pheu Thai also has Chaikasem Nitisiri, a former attorney general, as a candidate but he has recently had health issues and was hospitalized in April and as a result is not expected to be a prime choice at this time. Pheu Thai is part of an eight party coalition attempting to form the new government, with the overwhelming majority of members coming from Move Forward and Pheu Thai. 8. Thai women cautioned over marriage scams with Chinese nationals by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of iStock Police cautioned Thai women considering marriage to Chinese nationals against possible legal infringements in both Thailand and China. 9. Police cautioned Thai women considering marriage to Chinese nationals against possible legal infringements in both Thailand and China. According to a report on Monday, the alert followed revelations by the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division (ATPD) that a case involving a Thai woman from Udon Thani, subjected to marriage scams, and three years of abuse in China, did not constitute human trafficking. Deputy commander of the ATPD, Police Colonel Surapong Chatsut, clarified that the 31 year old woman involved, identified as Nuch opted to sign a contract to marry a Chinese man and have a child, thereby ruling out a case of human trafficking. Previously, Nuch confessed that a matchmaker named Da duped her and three other women into marrying Chinese men. The conditions were a 100,000 baht (US$2,900) dowry and the requirement to conceive within six months. Shockingly, the women ended up serving as housemaids or potentially even secondary wives to their fathers-in-law following childbirth. After being subjected to distressing treatment and family life in China, Nuch and the three other Thai women managed to return to Thailand last month with her mother’s intervention. Nuch wedded a 32 year old Chinese national, Jin Wei Lian, within only three days of their initial matchmaking encounter. Despite voicing her inability to bear children prior to the marriage, the wedding proceeded. Consequently, Nuch faced the brunt of assault at the hands of her husband and mother-in-law due to her ongoing childlessness. by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of iStock Full story: https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/crime/thai-women-cautioned-over-marriage-scams-with-chinese-nationals -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-07-17 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 13. Thai social media is seeing the hashtag #เมียน้อยสว (senator’s mistress) trending, calling on people to gather information on senators’ extramarital affairs. The calls are to focus on senators who voted against and abstained from voting for Move Forward party leader Pita Limjaroenrat as the next prime minister last Thursday. The hashtag was used more than 500,000 times, fewer than half the over one million uses of #ธุรกิจสว (senator’s business), a call to boycott businesses related to senators and their families. While the latest hashtag has not produced much information on senators’ extramarital dalliances, a number of brands have reacted to the first one with information on their ownership, as to whether it includes senators and their families. 15. The recent deportation of at least 59 children to Myanmar – which has been engulfed in violence since the 2021 military coup – has brought to light many problems in Thailand. The country is still struggling with how to efficiently handle kids fleeing from its strife-torn neighbor, manage its small schools, and more. The children were deported after being found to have entered Thailand illegally and registering at a school in the Central province of Angthong, hundreds of kilometers from border. An even bigger group of non-Thai students found at the same school is also facing the threat of deportation. Thai authorities are currently checking their status and entry records. Angthong’s Thairathwitthaya 6 School reportedly opened its door to kids from border zones after the number of Thai students declined to the point that it risked being closed down. Education Ministry regulations dictate that a school that has fewer than 10 Pathom 1 or Mathayom 1 students for three consecutive years must be merged with another school. The director of the Thairathwitthaya 6 School has so far denied any wrongdoing over the enrolment of Myanmar and other stateless children. 17. Engulfed in the turmoil stirred by criticism over the eligibility of Move Forward Party (MFP) leader Pita Limjaroenrat, the Election Commission (EC) staunchly defends its actions. Critics, including Pita, have insinuated that he was not given the rightful opportunity to counter the allegations before the case saw its day in court. The EC, in a strong-worded statement, clarified that the concerns in question revolve around Pita’s standing as a Member of Parliament (MP). They stated that belief and evidence both point towards a cessation of his MP status, due to certain specifics that warrant the annulment of such a position. Further solidifying their stance, the EC accentuated that their actions strictly adhered to Section 82 of the constitution. This particular enactment empowers them to promptly present a case to the Constitutional Court. The provision applies to scenarios when the EC, bolstered by tangible evidence, is convinced that the MP status of an individual has been rendered invalid as a consequence of circumstances mentioned in the constitution. by Top Photo by Sakchai Lalit via AP Full story: https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/politics/ec-defends-actions-amid-criticism-over-thai-mp-pitas-eligibility-debacle -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-07-17 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
