  1. Bangkok Bank Mobile App Continues to Have Widespread Issues Frustrating Customers By Adam Judd Thailand-The Bangkok Bank Mobile application has had a number of issues over this first weekend of July 2023, frustrating clients. The issues began yesterday, July 1st, in which many users continually reported being unable to connect and getting a picture of a lady bowing and apologizing for the inconvenience instead. This caused people to be unable to transfer money or pay for goods and services on a busy weekend with many people traveling. Bangkok Bank apologized for the issue and said it was a communication failure between devices that they were working on. 3. This week, American Ambassador to Thailand, Robert Godec, rejected claims by conservative activists that the United States had interfered or swayed the May 14th General Election. He said the US stood ready to support any new incoming government, whatever its political background. The envoy restated his country’s respect for the Thai Monarchy. He also firmly rejected any suggestion that Washington has its sights on an American military base in the kingdom. It comes as polls show that already there is opposition to the new government as nearly 49.16% of people are convinced Thailand will see more political conflict on the street while 29.06% fear another coup is likely. The United States has become a target for conservatives who were roundly defeated in the May 14th General Election and who are expected to quickly lead a return to street protests and conflict after the formation of a new government in July. It appears that despite over nine years of military involvement in the kingdom’s government, the lines of division have only shifted away from populist policies and power plays. The country, today, is divided between democrats and conservatives as well as those who support the United States and China with the latter dividing line already being used by the right to swell its ranks for the next struggle to take to the streets. The top American envoy to Thailand Robert Godec came out this week to assure the public that the United States respects the integrity of Thailand’s democratic process and was prepared to work with any incoming government no matter what its political allegiances may be. The statement comes as tensions are rising within conservative factions in the kingdom with the growing likelihood of a Move Forward Pheu Thai government coming to power this month. The election of a new democratic government may be somewhat marred by a recent national poll which shows that opposition to any new government is already running at 29.54% with 49.16% of people feeling that a return to street conflict is on the cards and 29.16% believing that the kingdom faces the prospect of a future coup d’état. by Joseph O' Connor #news Full story: https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2023/07/02/poll-political-conflict-still-on-the-cards-us-ambassador-denies-interference/ -- © Copyright Thai Examiner 2023-07-03 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 9. A recent court ruling unfurled in the Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases which witnessed a former appellate court judge handed a five-year prison sentence. The sentencing comes as a consequence of corruption allegations involving a whopping 20 million baht bribe request dating back to 2018. The judge had famously sought the bribe from an arrested Taiwanese individual, significantly affecting the judicial justice system’s integrity. The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) was instrumental in bringing this judicial anomaly to light, charging the judge under the Organic Act on Anti-corruption in addition to NACC regulations pertaining to bribery. NACC records indicate that the Taiwanese individual’s arrest occurred from November to December 2018 and was held in remand at Samut Prakan Provincial Court, Bangkok Post reported. Upon investigation, it was found that the offender in question was familiar with the incriminated judge who presided over Region 8 of the Appeal Court. It was during the Taiwanese defendant’s temporary release plea when the former Appeal Court Judge commanded a ‘tea money’ amount of 20 million baht. During the trial, substantial evidence brought forward by witnesses was considered, and the corruption allegations against the defendant gained ground. Continuing the unfolding saga, the Taiwanese offender had indeed bribed the Appeal Court judge on four separate occasions in 2018. This disturbing revelation came after the judge received the first instalment of 1 million baht on November 7 at the agreed location, the Sinthavee Hotel in Phuket. by Mitch Connor TOP PHOTO: Thai Banknote by lifeforstock from Freepik. #news Full story: https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/crime/thai-ex-judge-sentenced-over-20-million-baht-bribery-allegations -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-07-01 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 12. Launched just over a year ago, Thailand’s M-Flow or barrier-free toll system is now serving more than 110,000 vehicles each day. Although praised for easing traffic flows, it has also been a boon for cheaters, who have sought to exploit the system’s automated license plate recognition and post-pay service. The issue made headlines again this week when police arrested the driver of a luxury BMW sedan and accused her of evading M-Flow tollgate charges around 260 times. The BMW owner, 35, has been charged with using fake license plates. If convicted, she faces up to five years in jail and a maximum fine of 10,000 baht. She must also pay the evaded toll fees as well as a hefty fine. Those who fail to pay M-Flow fees by the deadline are penalized with a bill for 10 times the amount of their fees. Collection fees are also added to repayments of long overdue fees. #news Full story: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/thailands-barrier-free-toll-system-a-boon-for-motorists-and-a-challenge-for-cheaters/ -- © Copyright Thai PBS 2023-07-01 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 24. PM’s soothing words for frayed nerves as he says he will continue his role up to the next cabinet by Joseph O' Connor On Thursday, outgoing Prime Minister Prayut Chan ocha appeared at ease about the prospect of Thailand avoiding a political impasse or crisis. He thanked all those involved in the May 14th General Election and urged calm as the political process of forming the next government takes its course. He confirmed that he will remain in office until a new cabinet is appointed by the King. Key hurdle to forming the next government is the ability of eight party coalition and its supporters in parliament to find 376 seats in a July 13th vote by a combined sitting of both houses in a joint session. 25. On Thursday, outgoing Prime Minister Prayut Chan ocha appeared at ease about the prospect of Thailand avoiding a political impasse or crisis. However, the inability of the two key coalition partners, the Move Forward and Pheu Thai parties to agree on the next House of Representatives Speaker is becoming an equally disturbing factor to external observers. Prime Minister Prayut Chan Ocha has confirmed he will stay on as caretaker in the role as long as required while a new government is being formed and until a new cabinet is sworn in. The PM told reporters that it was not possible to know if the process of forming the next administration would be completed in line with a schedule set out in the last week or not because the process was a political one. He urged the public and the country at large to stay calm and positive, warning that a political crisis was something Thailand can ill afford. On Thursday, Acting Prime Minister Prayut Chan ocha told reporters that it was difficult, at this point, to predict whether the formation of the next government will be a slow or fast process. by Joseph O' Connor #news Full story: https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2023/06/30/pms-soothing-words-for-political-nerves-caretaker-until-new-cabinet/ -- © Copyright Thai Examiner 2023-07-01 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
