Don Mueang airport’s escalator accident not caused by poor maintenance The accident on an escalator at Don Mueang airport yesterday (Thursday) might have been caused by a small object falling into the end of the escalator, causing a gap in the floor panel that trapped the leg of a passenger before it stopped automatically 20 seconds later, said Boonpong Kitwattanachai, an advisor to the mechanical engineering committee of the Thai Engineering Institute of Thailand. Pita Confident More Senators Are Now Backing Him For PM
MOVE FORWARD LEADER PITA Limjaroenrat said today (June 30) more and more senators may already have decided to vote him for prime minister. Pita was responding to speculation that many of the unelected senators will either abstain from voting or cast yea votes for any other candidate for prime minister in lieu of him despite the fact that the Move Forward has become the largest elected party. The Move Forward leader has earlier pointed out that many senators may have doubts about the progressive party’s campaign-promised policy to amend the draconian lese majeste law, better known as Section 112, among others, and that he and his partisan colleagues have been giving them explanations and reaching mutual understanding about it. Prawit Tipped As Pita’s Rival For PM
PALANG PRACHARATH LEADER PRAWIT Wongsuwan will likely be named prime minister in rivalry against Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat, partisan sources said Friday (June 30). Prawit, the leader of the fourth largest elected party, will likely compete in a sustained effort to rise to power though he may have only 188 MPs on his side, compared to 312 in support of Pita, the leader of the No.1 largest party, as long as senators could potentially play a decisive role toward either side’s victory, the sources said. The military-designed constitution requires a partisan candidate for head of government to secure votes of support from more than half the combined total of MPs and senators or at least 376 votes. All 250 senators were handpicked by the Palang Pracharath leader and de facto Ruam Thai Sang Chart boss Prayut Chan-o-cha following the 2014 coup. Pheu Thai’s leverage may be getting stronger
Amid post-election shocks and Move Forward’s euphoria, the Pheu Thai Party looked all but dead and buried immediately after the May 14 election. It was a peculiar political mishap, though, because Pheu Thai still won 141 seats and as of now will still be able to be the second biggest party in a Pita government if it chooses to. The difference now is that playing the second fiddle to Move Forward is no longer Pheu Thai’s only option. Much has to do with the parliamentary numbers generated by the May election. A lot has to do with Pheu Thai starting to realise that. The rest has to do with Move Forward itself. Things have changed significantly after about one month and a half. Days after the election, Pheu Thai was under immense pressure to support Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat because all of the democratic logic demanded so. Take away Thaksin Shinawatra, who has been softly criticised by Move Forward, the two parties share virtually the same thinking, albeit with different levels of seriousness, aggression and extremism. There was no reason or justification why Pheu Thai should not back Pita. Now, what Move Forward has done since May 14 comes in. A victory parade has been followed by comments, activities or announcements that irritate or upset the conservatives. A viral clip of a female political leader deeply associated with Move Forward pretending to call a late Khana Ratsadon hero saying “We are making it” is not helping Move Forward’s difficult path. Outgoing PM calls for peaceful and prompt transition of power
Thailand’s caretaker PM has called for the formation of a new government to be peaceful and prompt. Asked if he’ll try for another term as PM if he gets the backing of MPs and senators, Prayut Chan-o-cha insists he will not. “No. Not at all.” The PM was responding to questions at a press conference held at Government House yesterday, June 29, according to a Nation Thailand report. Prayut says he will continue in his prime ministerial capacity until there is a new Cabinet in place, adding that he can’t say how long that will take. “I’ve repeatedly said I must be acting PM until the new Cabinet is sworn in. It could be a month more. They have their schedule. If everything is postponed, I’ll remain acting PM. If everything goes smoothly, I’ll leave in accordance with the schedule.” By Peter Roche #news Full story: https://phuket-go.com/phuket-news/national-news/outgoing-pm-calls-for-peaceful-and-prompt-transition-of-power/ -- © Copyright Phuket GO 2023-06-30 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. OPINION: Thailand’s people have spoken. Will its military listen?
In last month’s parliamentary elections, voters in Thailand made their desire to be rid of military rule and to restore democracy unmistakably clear. They turned out in record numbers and gave overwhelming support to two pro-democracy parties. Out front in the results was the progressive upstart Move Forward party. Its young leader, Pita Limjaroenrat, should rightly have the claim on the position of prime minister. But the generals and their conservative royalist allies don’t seem to have gotten the message. Or, more likely, they got it loud and clear but are once again choosing to put their own desire to cling to power over the will of the majority of Thais. In the six weeks since the election, the ruling elite has done everything possible to block Mr. Pita from forming a government. More ominously for Thailand’s future, they now appear to be maneuvering to keep him from entering parliament altogether by having him disqualified on highly technical, clearly spurious legal grounds. Mr. Pita’s first big hurdle to the top post is an unfairly skewed system for choosing a prime minister. The new constitution, drafted by the junta and adopted in 2017, was written specifically to preserve the military’s sway over any future elected government and prevent any real reformer such as Mr. Pita from coming to power. Thai vaping trend: Rising e-cigarette use among youth sparks health concerns
Survey data from Thailand’s Department of Health Service Support (DHSS) reveals a concerningly high proportion of young Thai individuals partaking in e-cigarette usage. The survey, conducted on a vast sample of 61,688 respondents ranging nationwide from April 25 to June 6, shows that 9.1% of young individuals use vapes. The influence of friends and peer pressure was cited as a major reason behind this concerning Thai vaping trend. The survey data on the Thai vaping trend showed a significant variation across different regions of Thailand. Bangkok, the country’s bustling capital, exhibited the highest rate of vaping among young people, with 14.6% admitting to the use of such devices. E-cigarettes, despite being illegal in Thailand, are commonly found and sold at many ephemeral street stalls, particularly dense in areas popular with tourists, contributing to the Thai vaping trend. The second-highest prevalence rates were observed in two areas, both standing at 13.6%. These were classified as Area Health (AH) No.3, encompassing provinces including Chai Nat, Kamphaeng Phet, Nakhon Sawan, Pichit and Uthai Thani, and the second as AH No.9 which includes Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima, Burirum and Surin. A slightly lower prevalence rate of 13.2% was recorded in AH No.4, which consists of Ayutthaya, Lop Buri, Saraburi, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani and Nakhon Nayok. by Mitch Connor Photo Courtesy blog.frontiersin.org #news Full story: https://thethaiger.com/news/national/increasing-e-cigarette-use-among-thai-youth-sparks-health-concerns -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-06-30 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
