The world has changed in the last 6 months, countries are protecting their own citizens first and foremost. For the time being globalization is over and insular policies prevail.
He's still a British Citizen. Living one of the most socialist states in the world - free health care, free social housing if you get lost, partially subsidised dental care, free education, and if you don't have a job you get some free social payouts.
"Oh poor me, i won't get any help, i'll be on the streets'.

For the vast majority ... THIS.
Thailand is back open again, with low infection rates, and the don't fancy returning to their covid infested countries. Instead of just saying that, they come up with elaborate excuses as to why they should not have to obey the immigration rules of Thailand.

So you have funds to support a Thai family. What is the source of these funds? You also have funds to commute between countries.
Why would you end up homeless if you returned to the UK, when you clearly have some funds.
If you have to return to the UK, then i'm sure your Thai family will have to look after themselves till you sort yourself out.
Don't be looking for excuses, especially when they make no sense. The UK, is one of the most socialist states in the world. If you have a national insurance number (which i'm sure you do if you are travelling the world), then the state will provide you with accomodation. If that takes a little time, use your funds to get yourself some temporary accomodation. You won't be homeless.

It needs to be discontinued immediately and people should be able to renew and change visa type visas in county.
If some 'influencer' out there is looking for a cause - this is it and it's the perfect time to introduce a change in the process.
Now - where did this nonsense policy come from? I suspect it was introduced decades ago to increase airline travel. It's as simple as that - it's all about money but not in the way we might immediately think.
Just fly to a foreign embassy they say - who gets the money? The airlines............
Nothing to do with a country trying to control it's borders? If you just indefinately allowed those on 'tourist' visas to remain indefinately, exploit loop holes on visa runs, then your own population could swell up pretty large.

Of course they are. Europeans and Americans most definately. Even those living in Australia / New Zealand can get on repatriation flights.
This loop hole is no different to the visa run to a neighbouring country, to stay there for a long indefinate period.
If you want to stay long term, get the proper visa.

UK rates are awful, but i'm aghast how there is no independent verification of 'official' figures each country gives out. Some are obviously motivated to keep the numbers down low.
Spain and Italy, two high tourist zones - the numbers they give out for mortality are hospital only rates. They don't include the huge numbers in care homes, and those at home. The UK does include all sets of figures.
Does anyone trust the figures out of Vietnam and Thailand? Especially when we are expected to beleive they have less numbers than Singapore, despite mamoth difference in populations. Vietnam especially, just closed up, and then said there was nothing to see. This despite huge volumes of Chinese pouring into Vietnam around Chinese New Year.
Any independent checks? No chance.
Even in India, the figures are wild crazy. But if you ever been to India, where all hospital care is privatised and at a cost, huge swades of poverty, where you won't get any access to health care never mind post mortems.
Then there is the testing issue - how many tests are Thailand doing to even know how much is in the country? The official figures are very small. Certainly not 150,000 tests a day a country like the UK is doing.
For all the <deleted> the UK is getting, at least you know the figures aren't being fudged. They report all mortality, infections rates in all settings. They aren't pulling a Spain, Italy and France and giving out half truth data. The UK's biggest scandal has been there utter horrific disaster in old peoples care homes, and poor governence at the start where they simply locked down too late.
Sad times.

When GDP is set to decline 8.1%, does that mean the THB will finally adjust to a more realistic exchange rate than it is now?
Not really. As both America, Europe also heading for a steep drop, so both the dollar/Pound/Euro will also have falls.
The UK for example is looking at a massive 25% yearly drop !!!! Then they face the final deal/no deal Brexit prospects.
I believe Thai gdp will fall much great than 8% though.

It's all over for Thailand.
Within a year they would be unable to pay the countries debt, the country in full starvation mode. It will turn to China, who will incorporate it into it's axis and take over.
Nana Plaza will be bulldozed and replaced with a pointless Chinese made condo. Beaches will be boarded up and replaced by more Chinese made condos.

Those soliders would have been home in their communities in the USA before coming out.
What could go wrong ?
-
Utter nonsense.
If they were worried they'd have gone home months ago at the peak back in April. The UK is not alone in opening up - pretty much all of Europe has opened.
Although opening up bars is absurd.

South Korea is also allowing in many more military from the US into the country. I suppose they have no choice there, but why do Thailand allow US military bases ?
South Korea is definately going to start getting more and more cases in the next few months - the situation in America is crazy.

I am keen to go to Thailand as soon as anyone else on here. However, if the virus was out of control there like in America, India, or UK, no one would visit the country, which in turn would wreck any future tourism. Furthermore their own population, which have no free health care, no access to public funds would be compromised.
Tourism is VERY important to the Thai economy, so it has to be done VERY safely.
Just to rush tourists in, because you don't take the virus seriously, and want to go to Nana Plaza is wreckless.

If Thailand was having rates like they are having in North/South America, Europe, India - would you really want to go to there? The only reason we yearn to go to Thailand rite now is because it's safe !
By the grace of good luck, they have escaped the terrible effects of this virus. When i saw thrones of Chinese tourists wandering into Thailand, despite the tragedy going on in Wuhan - and no measures other than a test certificate a few days before travel and random temperature checks, i feared a disaster.
There is no free health care in Thailand, no mass furlough scheme (paying people to stay at home), etc
Thailand will eventually have no choice but to open up - but it has to be done VERY carefully.
I honestly pray they don't just give up, and let anyone in randomly. No more mass Chinese tourism. Not giving up on any strategy and just opening back up and hoping for the best (which could very well be the case if the Chinese don't return).
My only concern is they are doing nothing. Nothing will change between now and next month. It's just causing unnesscary damage. They have to quickly come up with strategies.
Another concern is going back into bed with China. That would be a kick in the teeth to the world.
They need innovative procedures. The island tourism is a start. But the key is mass testing.
I went to Iceland this week. When you arrive at the airport, they do a covid test on you. It is just before passport control, like going through security. No queue. They take a quick swab of your nose and throat, and then you move onto passport control. I got my result in an hour and was on my way out of the airport ! They have essentially built a laboratory in the airport ! THESE ARE THE KIND OF INNOVATIONS NEEDED - especially for tourist reliant nations that will be crippled if tourism stops.

They will separate China into provinces rather than the whole country, then let in 1,000 tourists per province.
Pretty much. All this geared up on allowing in Chinese tourists.
The whole scenario is they let Chinese tourists in. The Chinese return in huge numbers, and all is well, then they will be happy. If Chinese tourists don't come in large number numbers, then they may turn to the likes of us - the unwashed - out of desperation.

I'd be interested if you could find a single peer-reviewed paper from a recognized scientific journal that references herd immunity without a vaccine.
Boris Johnson went on national televison and said a possibility was they could let the disease spread amongst the population. His chief scientific advisor said the same thing.

UK locked down too late, everybody could see it. They saw what was happening in China and then Italy and just let it run rife. Sporting events, large crowded events, concerts were still going on. The modelling was mistakenly done on the standard flu virus.
It didn't take James Bond to realise that when China were building mass scale hospitals in a week, closing down a city the size of London that it wasn't for a bloody flu.

Totally agree. The over 70's should have been isolated in the beginning for 6 months and let the world carry on. The amount of deaths caused by the lockdown will be much larger than deaths by covid. eg chemo treatment being stopped, screening stopped etc etc. Hospitals in the UK have been empty while operations have been cancelled.
The UK cases look worst because they are including mortality from setting in old people care homes and outside of hospital.
Italy and Spain are not including those figures - instead they just report hospital mortality. This would then put it on par with the UK. France too was trying to report only report hospital mortality, but then had to bow to pressure to add care homes. But they still don't add figures from mortality in homes.
The UK has made a huge fiasco of protecting it's elderly population. Basically old people in hospital (there for non covid reasons) were rushed back into care homes, meanwhile they probably contracted the virus from someone in the hospital. Then on top of that no restrictions were placed on those visiting people in care homes. And very few tests done on staff or on the actual people in the elderly home. Huge fiasco.

How is he funding his Thai wife and kid? He still doesn't disclose. One minute he says he will be homeless and then he is flying internationally, and supporting a family. With what funds?
One bedroom appartments in the UK. Never asked for a reference ever. Simple request is usually a months rent in advance. The amnesty of no evictions is also set to expire, if it hasn't already.
