I've seen case where the prosecutor office (must be where they have the equivalent of legal aid) help Thai family get estate executor appointed without need for lawyer, they just need a few fee like for the advertisement on court paper of the court date, and on the date they just read out the case in court, no body turns up to contest and it's done. the wait was long like 6-8months though

This is correct. If you approach a legal company they will obviously guide you towards believing they are the only acceptable avenue towards completing the necessary documentation.

However this is from a respected law firm here in LoS:

Aside from the heirs, any person the decedent designated in his/her will to be an estate administrator is able to petition the court.

    1. Heating allowance, there's no way to refuse it.

    2. Suspending Pension, suspect that would be against their own rules, but I have 4 years living expenses sitting in my bank (and less than a 2 year life expectancy) so no potential problem.

    3. There are no direct links to my life outside the UK (financial or social), certainly not through my bank account.

Better for me to worry about drowning from sea level rises, which is more likely than my pension being stopped.

Thank god for No.1 otherwise I would have to turn down the air con once it warms up here.

    Yes you can.

No you are not, many people need a Thai TIN because their home country bank requested one.

I have 6 bank accounts in the UK, only one of them 'pestered' me for a Thai TIN, and when I say pestered I mean the 'request' came with a strongly worded 'ignore this OFFICIAL request at your peril, doing so will have dire consequences including several years of punitive hard labour possibly in a North Korean prison.'

I can't write my response here due to aseannow rules , however the essence was 'No I don't have a TIN, I don't need one..go away'.  That was at least a year ago....and they respected my answer.

I maintain my initial advice on this subject.

You have to have a will in your country of origin and a trustworthy and competent executor there to manage the transition and the longterm support to your Thai partner.

My understanding, assuming the 'husband' is living in Thailand with his Thai wife and dies in Thailand that a will lodged in Thailand and translated to Thai is a must. I would not want my Thai wife having to deal with the 'authorities' in my home country as that would place her at a disadvantage both from a language and process position.

Personally I have instructed a Thai based lawyer to create my will and instructed my wife to contact them on my demise. They will then contact the relevant authorities in the UK ( banks, pension providers etc) and report in Thai to my wife which I hope will be more favourable to her.

Whilst I'm on the subject, my main concern is having the residue of my pensions paid to her without onerous problems and bank charges. Some would only be small monthly payments and paying transfer fees on each amount would bug me from above.

Thinking about your response, a good solution would be for a Thai Lawyer to have contact with the 'executor' in your home country.

  5. Presently having treatment for PC.  Started with a general check up in early September revealing a PSA of 24 , so then the finger test a week or so later. Possibility of Cancer was explored with an MRI at Srisawan private hospital on Rattchapreuk Road , cost 22k (ish). Then  I reported back to the original urologist in Siriraj and with that further confirmation I opted for a Biopsy, (55k -private room). Was feeling ok after less than a day after the op, no problems and then the results...a Gleeson 9 and had to act quick. The location and size was then further confirmed by a PET at Siriraj (50k) and then  I opted for Radiotherapy rather than surgery; I'm 22 doses into 28 that will be another 300k.The LINAC  is the only one of its kind in SouthEast Asia and the care is 100%, so hoping for a successful outcome.

Strange thing is I felt great in August before the diagnosis and unfortunately don't feel so good now due the side effects and the travelling (5 hours round trip). Furthermore I used to love drinking ordinary (filtered) tap water before the sessions started , now I feel queezy just thinking about the stuff, probably psychosomatic.

Good luck and I'm not medically qualified to offer any advice on which route or treatment to take, all I offer is my own personal experience.

What I will say is that it would be useful if I'd been seen by my doctor in the UK earlier. Reception at my original doctor had a problem because I lived out of area and then the doctor I transferred to had a problem at reception due to me not using my middle name that I hadn't used for 60 years. No health check from the doctor but plenty of paper pushing.

  6. Firstly , as a customer I would hazard a guess that the Roof Truss v Mild Steel ‘differences’ has been compiled by the Roof Truss company.

    Now as a Metallurgist:

    The comparison suggests that the anti corrosive paint applied to the MS is somehow inferior;

If the ‘factory-made, anti corrosive screws’ are a dissimilar material to the roof truss sections then corrosion will occur regardless.

Why not manufacture the built on site roof out of HT steel, if it’s that critical (which in my opinion Tensile Strength is not the overriding attribute). How will it be ‘undersized’ if it’s designed correctly.

Design can be equally effective if calculated manually with pre-existing structural formula.

Speed of erection is correct, now factor in production times ( and delays)

Checking quality of mechanical fixings also requires physical inspection.

Installation of the final roof cover is a separate operation and has it’s own unique quality standards

I built a store (warehouse) 20M x 15M 5 years ago fabricated on site, no need for a warranty, I’m confident it will still be functional and sound in 20 years time.

  7. Anyone have any advice (other than “get married’) to this conundrum

The Deloitte advice is that IHT is not payable up to assets of £325,000 by Spouse or civil partner.

I’m not married to my (Female) Thai partner of 14 years.

One definition (CAB UK) of a Civil Partnership: 'A civil partnership is a legal relationship which can be registered by two people who aren't related to each other. Civil partnerships are available to both same-sex couples and opposite-sex couples. Registering a civil partnership will give your relationship legal recognition'.

Furthermore CAB UK states that there is recognition for partnerships formed overseas.

    However:

HMRC (Civil Partners: SET 04) 'A civil partner is a person who has legally registered his / her partnership with another person of the same sex.'

    Clear as mud...as usual.

Should I get my partner to change sex?

I believe the theory all along was that a single bullet killed JFK and injured the other guy in the car.

With the revelation in the article, there are now 2 bullets.

My understanding / study was that particular bullet wasn't all that magic (due to the slope of the highway etc) and it wasn't the fatal one. The fatal shot was the last one that only hit Kennedy. There were 3 shots identified by sound and impact ( the first hit a kerbstone a long way down from the target). This report changes nothing in that respect.

  9. Sorry can't help with any recommendation of a maid, but would recommend giving them an ultimatum on cleaning the house themselves. I use to have student properties I let out years ago and agree, most girls are untidy, but they need to learn.

What was funny is how in the first week of living in a property, the 4 girls would have a rota of jobs posted in the kitchen. After another week the rota was gone and the house became worse than a pigsty.

Use the maid money on sending them to a Swiss finishing school, the nuns will sort them out.

  10. Visited last April and May , very few people were wearing them. Bars and restaurants did not require any ID / proof etc, I didn't use public transport so can't comment , however I'm pretty sure there were  no restrictions. 1 year later I bet even less people will be wearing them. Good luck, I'm following you in a few days, might wear a mask  at Swampy, after that it's back to normal air intake.

  11. Metallurgist here.

Copper and Aluminium are quite apart on the galvanic scale. However they need an electrolyte for problems to emerge.

    1. Why not use Copper throughout

    2. If dissimilar metals are used enclose the connector to protect from oxygen and water

    3. If using copper + copper don’t use an aluminium clamp.

    4. Galvanise the Aluminium at the joint.

You would need to be more concerned if it was Aluminium and Stainless Steel.

Maybe the 18th Edition BS 7671 Requirements for Electrical Installations. IET Wiring Regulations will help with your decision.

  12. I’m in the KannikaP, dingdongrb, KhunLA , KhunBENQ camp on this one. However I disagree with the 12 characters.

Assuming 60 characters (upper-lower-numerical) options 60*60*60*60*60 (ie 5 characters) typing at 1 character per second would take around 24 years to enter all the combinations.
