There is a Non-immigrant "O [for`other`]" visa, which allows a single entry (permission to stay) into Thailand for 90 days. If one qualifies, permission to stay may be extended an additional year...and for subsequent years thereafter.
I know that..but if you go onto an ext of stay for 1 year, then you are no longer on a NON O..so you cannot have a non O retirement ext..it's either one or the other.

It was likely a decision made before the pandemic. I left end February on a ticket booked the previous November and had I not travelled my ticket would have been lost. Even then there was no realistic threat that borders would be closed in the manner they have nor up to my scheduled return last month. As it happens I’m married to a Thai on non O retirement visa so technically am eligible but not for the moment prepared to go through all the hoops to return.
Your post smacks of smugness based on hindsight. There is no such thing as a non o retirement visa?

no.
a non-immigrant o visa is a visa. a single-entry visa allows you to enter the country once, plus gives you permission to stay up to a certain number of days. once you're in, the visa is dead, as it has served it's purpose of allowing entry. that's why you need a re-entry permit if you leave. you no longer have an active visa. it keeps the extension of stay valid, not the visa. (multiple entry be more complicated)
an extension of stay is not a visa. it simply adds to the number of days permitted to stay allowed under the original visa. the visa is still dead but you get to stay longer.
Yes, I understand all of that. The OP said he holds a "non-O" category visa with extension of stay based on retirement...so my question is why would he have a NON O and an ext based on retirement? I understand he would have needed a NON O initially to get the 1 yr ext, but he makes it sound as if he has a NON O and an ext? As you said once you get ext the original NON O becomes dead?

Why would you have a non 'o' and a retirement extension, aren't they 2 separate visa types?

I've only ever read that on here, so it must be a cringe TV only saying.

It just sounds like normal life to me..ie absolutely boring and rubbish. I realised years back that 90% of life for the average person is just sh!t, and the vast majority of people are annoying and/or dull, that's just the way it is, life's a bitch then you die. Many will disagree of course, good for you, crack on.
I only read the OP btw, I can't bear to read 5 pages of 'wisdom' and advice that the OP will of course completely ignore anyway, or just forget

Um, not fair. I had to move money around, stuff around with a gazillion documents from many different agencies, waste so much time and money and now they do this? I should have just sat on my ass and done nothing!
But nobody knew, so I wouldn't beat yourself up over it. I did a similar thing.

If they charge 1,900 Baht, I don't see how anyone has lost out. For those whingers, what about all of us that did our extensions in March and have religiously done 90 day reports...I don't feel I am worse or better off as it's what is required normally.
Yep, seems like they intentionally did it this way to get as much $ in by the 26th.
I went onto a retirement extension, and don't really regret it as it's done now. As they say, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I went to COwboy last weekend with a friend. After about an hour, in which we went to three different bars I told him I'd been to more exciting graveyards than soi cowboy. He admitted to be somewhat bemused by why they continue to charge 180 baht for a small bottle of beer when the bars are empty. It seems like only a matter of time before more go under. One bar had one other customer than us two, the other two bars had no other customers than us.
You would think there would be a few more expats knocking about?

It's 'drivel'

Just buy whatever you like the look of the most, within your budget. Who cares about engine performance, service, and wheel size etc when all you are going to do anyway is drive to Big C and back and down to your local watering hole?

Went today at Ubon at 11am for 60 day family ext and even though it didn't look too busy I was told 'come back tomorrow full' I told them to do one and went to see an agent who is now sorting me a 1 yr retirement ext.
Ok not ideal, but I would have had to had done it in 60 days anyway. And yes, it's my fault for leaving it so late. Whatever.

I really suspect 95% of the posters / lurkers on TV either a) don't live here or b) have never been here. Some of the drivel on this post...... as usual the guy just asked a fairly straightforward question and it's quite clear only about 2 or 3 posters actually know what's going on. The rest wanna be comedians or rhetorical answers, like a kid trying to get attention with the adults. I'm surprised no one has chimed in yet with the endlessly boring sick buffalo cracks.
Yep, it's because they are bored, and/or just seriously obtuse people. They know who they are. It's pathetic on here for sure.
