  1. Just as well we left the EU then. Bunch of pissheads...
  2. In principle I agree that without conscription an Army is likely to be more disciplined and professional. Like you I served for a long time in the British Army. As part of my long and not particularly glorious career I spent some time with a small unit drawn from various European nations. Before anyone gets too excited it was not "Special Forces", very ordinary soldier me! It was run by the French, (I am a French speaker) and we had a couple of Dutch conscripts (also French speakers). True to say that they were not amongst the most enthusiastic of soldiers - but I remember one of them explaining that the main reason they were so bloody minded was that they were looked down on and didn't feel valued by their NCOs and Officers. Handled carefully they were fine, and on the odd occasion when we went into possibly hostile places I never had any concerns about them "covering my back". Their ration packs had excellent coffee, and remarkably good (Indonesian) curry. From time to time, when circumstances allowed I would share a few beers with my "team", British, French, Danes and Dutch, (the Danes were conscripts too) - and never any problems. I called them "Stoter" XYZ (Private), or "Konstabel" (the Danes), they called me sir. Never any problems.
  3. Almost certainly not conscripted squaddies, but senior officers interfering. The number of officers serving on boards of directors of various civilian companies is legion - I mean, obviously a medical technology manufacturer has a pressing need for an experienced artillery man!
  4. Thank you, I will have a look later.
  5. I have this external hard drive. I have had it for about ten years, but have not used it for several years. When I connect it, using the "double USB" connections, it is very slow to load. "The green bar" creeps along very slowly, and after several minutes this message appears: the little blue light on the front of the case flickers away, so I presume something is happening inside. Does anyone have any suggestions - I am the man for whom " plug and play" was invented! Grateful for any suggestions...
  6. Probably a bit of both - maybe he assumes that the Supreme Court will dismiss any challenges...
  7. Another hurdle erected. They really must be wanting us to use agents mustn't they? Can't imagine why ( ????????????)!
  8. English Premier League football, driven by money, egos, commercial involvement, overseas money and sponsorship with a significant following amongst thugs. What an entirely appropriate venue for discreet (?) Thai political manoeuverings!

  10. Perhaps reinforced by the very obvious presence still in office of the Prime Minister, Ministers and Government which was so emphatically rejected in the recent election, and the suspicion that they will remain in office.
  11. Here there are 3 levels of school. Anuban (Kindergarten), years 1, 2 and 3. Ages 4, 5 and 6. Prathom or " Por"(primary) years P1, P2, P3, P4, P5 and P6. Ages 6 to 12. Mathayom or "Mor" ( secondary) years M1, M2, M3, M4, M5 and M6. Ages 12 to 18. Ages will vary slightly, depending on where the child's birthday falls in relation to the school year, which starts in May. For example, my daughter who will be 18 in July has just started M6. These lads were reportedly M1 and M2 so around 13 and 14.
  12. I think Abhisit was exempted as he had completed the Cadet Force program at secondary school. This meant that he held a commission as a reserve Second Lieutenant! Thailand has lots and lots of these reserve Lieutenants. As their training at school is pretty basic, and subsequently non existent, they are, in military terms, useless.
  13. Good of this French Minister to take up the fight on behalf of the 26 other countries in the EU. I wonder how they found out he was handling the matter. Maybe he sent them a tweet?
  14. I wonder whether this chap actually did National Service himself? Maybe he was already sufficiently "equal"?
  15. The state is responsible for enforcing it. The present incumbents (still in place, bizarrely, for another 6 weeks, despite emphatically losing an election) will not enforce it.
  16. It is very reasonable, a compromise; if you cannot stomach the idea that the largest sector of the population voted for a MFP government, an overwhelming majority voted for a government drawn from MFP and PT, and a tiny minority voted for the incumbents. It is a reasonable compromise if you wish for the existing undemocratic power structure, which has been emphatically rejected by the people, to remain in power; if you wish to see a continuation of authoritarian government - in short perhaps, if you are a neofascist!
  17. I should imagine that they would steer clear of central heating - given the "other places" experience of heating!
  18. We've had the: racist, xenophobic, anti-hispanic, anti American, traditionalist, liberal views. Can I weigh in with a sexist suggestion - she would look good with a pair of knickers made from the Mexican flag and a bra made from the Stars and Stripes. Not the other way round obviously, that would be disrespectful...
  19. Why do they do it? The bloke will be 71 in a couple of months time. Does he really expect to ever enjoy living in it?
  20. That is what the German Christian Democrats said way back in the early 1930s...
  21. For goodness sake, lighten up. I am quite possibly one of the least homophobic and most tolerant in terms of political, social and sexual "mores" of all the heterosexual white Anglo Saxon males who post on this forum. Yes, my sense of humour tends towards the "dark sarcasm in the classroom" genre, perhaps it is not to everyone's taste, but don't ascribe things to it that are simply not there! If you don't like it, ignore it.
  22. So mass/rapid transit in Bangkok: Overhead rail "SkyTrain" (standard gauge). Underground rail ( standard gauge but not compatible with SkyTrain), Airport Link ( standard gauge overhead but not compatible with SkyTrain), monorail systems. "Legacy " SRT local passenger services, metre gauge Nothing like a bit of variety then!
  23. There may be some hope for those interested. Going on some of the photos published covering some high profile operations recently by immigration, their does appear to be a significant following for "The Village People" amongst their ranks!
