  1. It takes about 5 minutes and a cheap blender, or 10 minutes and a stiff arm, to whisk up some decent mayo, unsweetened (unless you want to), no preservatives, just the perfect stuff. Try it, never look back.

Can one of the resident coffee afficionados tell me if there is a marked difference in taste between coffee from a bean ground in front of your eyes in a bean to cup coffee machine or ground coffee from the same supplier prepared from a standard espresso machine and would most people be able to tell the difference?

    I appreciate that there could be an element of freshness in the recently ground bean scenario, but seriously could the average person detect that?

    Oh yes, certainly.

    I grind my own beans whenever possible, just for one pot at a time and it is definitely lots better than pre-ground stuff, even freshly bought.

    Only we don't use the Richter scale no more, rather the Moment Magnitude scale. (MMS) The idea is the same though.

    As with the Richter scale, an increase of one step on this logarithmic scale corresponds to a 101.5 ≈ 32 times increase in the amount of energy released, and an increase of two steps corresponds to a 103 = 1000 times increase in energy.

  4. A word to activism as some here complain about ...

    Secrecy, blinding tactics, using billions for advdertisement, lobbying, distortions, hiding serious accidents and so much more is seriously dangerous activism.

    Seems as if GE and others get a class action law suit coming their way. So far to nukes at the coastal areas. They should have denied that location. Just common sense ...

    Not thread related, though if you know where I can send my bill, please -do- tell.

    Now can we get back on topic, being the -current- situation and developments with the incidents at the Japanese nuclear reactors at the TEPCO Daiichi plant, and some minor US bashing?

    Radiochemical analysis of the breast muscle from the pigeons showed significant levels of plutonium and americium-241 isotopes (table 4 and table 5) but of much lower radiological significance than caesium. These isotopes would only contribute a few percent of the dose to any consumer of that due to caesium - 137.

    Eat that, plutonium scaremongers :)

    During the Manhattan Project in 1944 and 1945, 26 men accidentally ingested plutonium in quantities that far exceeded what is now considered to be a lethal dose. Since there has been a consistent interest in the health effects of this brand new substance (first discovered by Glenn Seaborg's team at the University of California in 1940), these men were closely tracked for medical studies.

    As of 1987, more than four decades later, only four of the workers had died and only one death was caused by cancer. The expected number of deaths in a random sample of men the age of those in the group is 10. The expected number of deaths from cancer in a similar group is between two and three.

  6. Here's another source comparing I-129 and I-131 for those concerned:

    It requires much more mass of an isotope with a long half life to give the same exposure/dose than that of an isotope of the same element with a short half life.

    I-131 gives off 1,000,000,000 times as much radiation as the same mass of I-129. One microgram of I-131 would give off the same radiation as one kilogram of I-129.

    I would be surprised if anything even CLOSE to a kilogram of anything was released so far.

  7. Because of its extremely long half-life I-129 isn't anything to worry about, it has extremely low activity. Think about it: Take the same amount of I-129 and I-131. in about 8 days I-131 will have emitted half the beta particles it ever will.

    In about 15.7 Million years, the amount of I-129 will have done the same.

    So during those 8 days, the actual amount of beta particles from I-129 will be totally inconsequential.

    Edit to add:

    - We don't have to worry too much about isotopes with short half-life because they will be gone soon enough (hours to months)

    - We don't have to worry about isotopes with very long half-life because their activity is very low

    - The intermediate isotopes like Cs-137 is what we have to look out for, they are active enough to affect you and long-lived enough to have the time to do so.

  8. I was just reading the same studies, the good news is that in most plants, the effective half-life is a lot shorter than the specific half-life of the Cesium-137 involved (due to earth-binding and absorption)

    Edit: Note that we are talking specifically about Cs-137, the other compounds (especially I-131) will be mostly gone in a month or two and undetectable in 3 months.

  10. Here is a reference about the Cs-137 contamination in Germany after the Chernobyl disaster. Note that emissions of that disaster where orders of magnitude greater than the 'controlled' venting currently going on.

    During the months directly after the Chernobyl fallout food sources growing or raised outside as well as meat from herbivorous wild animals was contaminated at a higher rate with radiocesium. While the radiocesium contamination in agriculturally produced plant and animal foods has declined since the last few years to pre-Tschernobyl levels, comparatively high levels of Cs-137 can still be found in berries, mushrooms and the meat of game animals from certain forested areas.

    These differences in Cs-137 contamination are caused by the fact that the transfer of radiocesium from Cs ion fixing clay minerals in the soil to the crops growing there is low and the high nutrient content, and the high pH-value of agriculturally used soils also inhibit transfer. In contrast this transfer to plants in forests, esp. on forest soils with thick humus layers is relatively high. In addition dynamic biological processes (deposition of litter, decomposition, etc.) occur in forest ecosystems along with purely physical processes (adsorption, fixation,etc.), both of which have a complex influence on the vegetation and wild animals.

    We have been investigating the long term behaviour of radiocesium in undisturbed ecosystems with emphasis on "forest products" since 1986.
