  1. Adaptation can only go so far. Except, of course that as the days get hotter, that means it's too hot for longer. There are only so many hours of daylight in which to get work done. Kidney disease is rising sharply among construction workers and agricultural laborers in countries where high heat is prevalent. In addition, nights, which is when humans and other creatures have the opportunity to cool down, are also getting warmer, with minimum temperatures rising, and making humans more vulnerable to the heat of the day. Still, adaptation is definitely essential. Like swapping out air conditioners and fossil fuel based heating systems for heat pumps. And by replacing energy producing systems which create greenhouse gases for affordable systems that don't.
  2. Deadly Attack Revives Fears of the Return of Mass Terror in Russia A deadly assault in the southern region of Dagestan has put a spotlight on the failing of Russian security services amid the war in Ukraine. https://archive.ph/W7AsE#selection-489.0-493.140 Attacks in Russia’s Dagestan Region: What to Know Two bloody attacks in Dagestan, in southern Russia, on Sunday ignited fears of extremist violence on the home front, as the Kremlin pours resources and bodies into its sprawling war in Ukraine. https://archive.ph/SCrSq#selection-4447.0-4451.175
  3. Since when do placards carried by demonstrators of any political stripe offer nuance and qualifications?
  4. It could be that Islamic militants are taking advantage of the Russian focus on Ukraine. It's dubious that Russia has enough additional resources now to do to Dagestan what it did to its neighbor, Chechnya.
  5. "it was then deemed for the incorporation as a backing into the subscription of the US$" What does this bizarre concatenation of words mean?
  6. This was during the Cold War era when people were looking for reds under the beds. In fact, In God We Trust was first adopted as some kind of motto by Union troops during the Civil War when both sides were claiming that God was on their side. (Actually, the South may have had a better point, since not only did the Bible not condemn slavery, but St. Paul of the New Testament actually said "Slave obey your masters.") There was a movement after the Civil War to put a preamble in the Constitution proclaiming the God was the source of all governmental authority. Fortunately, it failed. And as rationality returned, the motto was removed from American coinage. Anyway, during wars, whether hot or cold, when emotionalism runs hot, are generally favorable for the erosion of civil liberties.
  7. Good thing Americans don't commit crimes of violence in even greater numbers...oh wait a minute... "Alex Nowrasteh, with the libertarian Cato Institute, analyzed the Texas data to make a comparison of immigrants in the country illegally and native-born residents. In a recent post he noted that in 2015 Texas police made 815,689 arrests of native-born Americans, 37,776 arrests of immigrants in the country illegally and 20,323 arrests of legal immigrants. Given the relative populations for each group, he wrote, “The arrest rate for illegal immigrants was 40 percent below that of native-born Americans.” In addition, he wrote, the homicide arrest rate for native-born Americans was “about 46 percent higher than the illegal immigrant homicide arrest rate.”" https://www.factcheck.org/2018/06/is-illegal-immigration-linked-to-more-or-less-crime/ That data from Texas is particularly compelling because unlike most states, it does keep statistics based on immigration status. And in terms of population it's the second largest state (about 30 million) with lots of undocumented immigrants.
  8. It's not just about Gorbachev. As the second article pointed out, there was nothing in the documentation of that time that pointed to any kind of promise not to expand NATO. The allegations that such promises were made were offered years later. Such claims as "a violation of the spirit of the assurances given Moscow in 1990" are impossible to prove or disprove given that they are based on emotion.
  9. Was something of substance offered to reply to? Have there been any mass Islamist terror attacks in the US since Biden took office? If there were, were there any from those who crossed the border illegally? Sooner or later, in a country as populous as the US, there will almost certainly be a terrorist attack from Islamists. But how serious is that threat compared to others? Remember when Germany took in a million mostly Muslim refugees from the Mideast and all the dire predictions about how an abundance of terrorist attacks would follow? Has that happened?
  10. Thousands of terrorists being let in and so far how many attacks? These must be the most incompetent terrorists ever.
  11. I don't think anybody so far in this discussion has noticed what seems to me to be the obvious point: All these proposals were conditional. They all begin with "If.." There's no evidence that any negotations actually settled this question. In fact... Did NATO Promise Not to Enlarge? Gorbachev Says “No” Western leaders never pledged not to enlarge NATO, a point that several analysts have demonstrated. Mark Kramer explored the question in detail in a 2009 article in The Washington Quarterly. He drew on declassified American, German and Soviet records to make his case and noted that, in discussions on German reunification in the two-plus-four format (the two Germanys plus the United States, Soviet Union, Britain and France), the Soviets never raised the question of NATO enlargement other than how it might apply in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). https://www.brookings.edu/articles/did-nato-promise-not-to-enlarge-gorbachev-says-no/ The Myth of a No-NATO-Enlargement Pledge to Russia The documents from all sides fully bear out Zelikow’s argument and undermine the notion that the United States or other Western countries ever pledged not to expand NATO beyond Germany. The British, French, U.S., and West German governments did make certain commitments in 1990 about NATO’s role in eastern Germany, commitments that are all laid out in the Final Settlement with Respect to Germany, but no Western leader ever offered any ‘‘pledge’’ or ‘‘commitment’’ or ‘‘categorical assurances’’ about NATO’s role vis-a`-vis the rest of the Warsaw Pact countries. Indeed, the issue never came up during the negotiations on German reunification, and Soviet leaders at the time never claimed that it did. https://csis-website-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/s3fs-public/legacy_files/files/publication/twq09aprilkramer.pdf
  12. Excellent advice for outdoor laborers such as agricultural and construction workers. After all, it's not like they're doing this to feed themselves and their families. Impacts of warming on outdoor worker well-being in the tropics and adaptation options The harmful effects of global warming are already present for many people in the tropics, where high temperatures and humidity are often a feature of everyday life, especially for outdoor workers.1,2,3 The human and economic costs are significant. The cost of lost potential labor productivity for outdoor workers from heat is already estimated at several hundred billion to over 2 trillion dollars per year (in 2017 purchasing power parity adjusted dollars).Reports on the health, adaptation strategies, and well-being of outdoor workers to date indicate that impacts are pervasive across the tropics. https://www.cell.com/one-earth/fulltext/S2590-3322(24)00047-2?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS2590332224000472%3Fshowall%3Dtrue Chronic Kidney Disease Is Poised to Become the Black Lung of Climate Change One of the enduring legacies of this summer’s spate of heat waves is likely to be a disease that few people have heard of, but which could become more prevalent as heat and humidity increase around the world. First documented in El Salvador’s sugarcane workers 21 years ago, Mesoamerican nephropathy, now known as Chronic Kidney Disease of Non-traditional origin (CKDnt), tends to manifest among outdoor laborers who work grueling hours in high heat conditions. Characterized by a fatal progressive loss of kidney function, CKDnt has killed at least 20,000 people in Central America since it was first diagnosed, and likely tens of thousands more elsewhere in the world. https://time.com/6303020/chronic-kidney-disease-climate-change/
  13. You should publish your findings in the Journal of Unconfirmable Data. In the meantime, there's this: Data-Driven Analysis of Climate Change in Saudi Arabia: Trends in Temperature Extremes and Human Comfort Indicators Our findings indicate that, over the past four decades, Saudi Arabia has warmed up at a rate that is 50% higher than the rest of the landmass in the Northern Hemisphere. Moreover, moisture content of the air has significantly increased in the region. The increases of temperature and humidity have resulted in the soaring of dewpoint temperature and thermal discomfort across the country. https://journals.ametsoc.org/view/journals/apme/60/8/JAMC-D-20-0273.1.xml
  14. I can't believe that I have to spell this out for you. And what would have happened if society literally just stopped using horses as soon as automobiles were introduced? Or as soon as trains were invented?
  15. The big question used to be will the US-UK effort restore Red Sea shipping. And we know the big answer. The new big question is a lot smaller than the old one.
  16. I think we're seeing that now: Suspected Houthi drone strike in Red Sea damages China-bound ship A Liberia-flagged container ship was damaged in an aerial drone strike allegedly carried out by the Houthis in the Red Sea, in the latest attack by the Yemini group targeting the vital maritime corridor. The attack on the China-bound vessel took place off the coast of Hodeida city around dawn on Sunday, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations centre, led by the British navy, said. It said the ship sustained damage but the mariners on board "were reported safe". https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/houthi-attack-china-ship-red-sea-israel-gaza-war-b2567330.html
  17. "However, the DA's office dismissed cases against 31 of these individuals, citing insufficient evidence, such as security footage, to tie them directly to the building's takeover." What is so hard to understand about that?
  18. Was that video used to identify who was in Hamilton Hall? I didn't see any identifiable faces from it. Was there no evidence from other videos or other sources used to identify the 13?
  19. And where have I questioned that the DA's office feels it has sufficient evidence to prosecute the 13? It's the fact that so many of those arrested have had charges dismissed that has generated the outrage. Did you read the headline? Outrage as Manhattan DA Drops Charges Against Columbia University Anti-Israel Protesters
  20. Their arrest by the police is not evidence of guilt. If the police had useful videos those would be evidence.
  21. Just because this tape provides evidence that some people were trespassing, that doesn't mean that this tape provides evidence of exactly who they were. And, as far as I can tell, it doesn't. No matter how many times you show it.
  22. Funny world where having Drag Queens doing story hour is a negative to some people, but telling little kids not to have sex outside of marriage is a positive thing to them. And also not to covet your neighbor's wife.
  23. "Traitorous"? Are you under the impression that Israel is the 51st state?
