This has nothing to do with your original specific claim about the educational and economic composition of immigrants coming to America -

No that is not what I'm saying. I'm saying that what you subsequently said is not the same as what you originally wrote. I agree that all the founding Fathers were very well educated. but that is not what you originally claimed. In fact, your original point made no mention of the founding fathers at all. I have no clue as to why you're bringing them up now. -

But that's not what you originally wrote. Here's the gist again: People immigrated there from all over the world, including many Europeans. They brought with them ideas and talent and money from just about everywhere. And they were educated." In fact they were mostly poor and uneducated or ill-educated. Peasants mostly. Except maybe the Jewish immigrants who weren't allowed to own farmland in the regions they mostly came from. They just came from poor villages. -

What has that got to do with your original claim that "they were educated"? Here's the passage from you in full: "Have you ever been to America? It's not a homogeneous place, if I can use that term. There are over 300 million people in America, and just as many "Americas." People immigrated there from all over the world, including many Europeans. They brought with them ideas and talent and money from just about everywhere. And they were educated." -

I'm just using logic based on Trump's premises and qualifications. I don't see what the difficulty is. Once a claim is made that acquisition is 100% certain and military force isn't ruled out, what other conclusion can be drawn. By all means, please point out to me what is specifically wrong in the case I've presented. -

Large scale Scottish immigration, which I mentioned began in the late 17th century but really took off early in the 18th century. And even before that, many immigrants came as indentured servants. They worked for x number of years to pay off the cost of passage without any remuneration. Indentured servitude in British America was the prominent system of labor in the British American colonies until it was eventually supplanted by slavery.[1] During its time, the system was so prominent that more than half of all immigrants to British colonies south of New England were white servants, and that nearly half of total white immigration to the Thirteen Colonies came under indenture.[2 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indentured_servitude_in_British_America These were obviously not wealthy, educated people. -

But logically speaking, since it's 100% certain that the US will acquire Greenland there is no other possible conclusion to draw. Of course he could be lying. Just as he could be lying if he said what was claimed he said. Or maybe not even lying, just shooting off his mouth in the usual way -

Big difference? Really? Trump claims it's 100% certain that the US will acquire Greenland. He refuses to rule out using military force. So if peaceful means prevail, what other means remain? Why refuse to rule out military force? EDIT: Should have written "if peaceful means don't prevail" -

HIs quote isn't correct but here's one that is: “We’ll get Greenland. Yeah, 100%,” Trump said, adding that there is a “good possibility that we could do it without military force” but that he wouldn’t “take anything off the table.” https://www.vanityfair.com/news/story/trump-nbc-interview-greenland-tariffs-signal?srsltid=AfmBOoqftDnEpQVOMaMcv3NpRQwXDcw-3nORheR-bINJJScf4boK1Gnx Do you see a substantive difference? -

This is about as false as any historical generalization can be. Actually the people who came to America in the heyday of immigration were mostly poor people fleeing the vastly unequal societies of Europe. Scots feeling the enclosure laws, Germans fleeing conscription, religious persecution, and limited agricultural opportunities, the Irish fleeing famine and the miserable status inflicted on them as Catholics by the British, Jews fleeing persecution and unequal treatment, Slavs fleeing their general miserable economic status and so on. It was in America that they got educated and that was due to the influence of the Founding Fathers who strongly promoted public education. When de Tocqueville came to America he was astonished by the high level of literacy he found among most Americans, not just the wealthy. -

You made a claim about America being a great place to live which is why so many people are moving there. . Now you're saying it's a great place to live for you because of Medicare. You think many elderly foreigners are immigrating to America? And if they do, will they get Medicare? -

Did you miss the part about life expectancy and high health care costs? And people from poorer nations moving to wealthier nations is a worldwide phenomenon. Not just confined to the USA. Up till now, the US did draw a lot of highly educated foreign scientists to do research at US universities much of it funded by the Federal Govt.. But given the huge budget cuts, that looks like a thing of the past. Other developed nations are starting to take advantage of this by luring scientists to their countries instead. -

Or maybe not. When opioids were primarily an affliction of black people, right wingers saw jail as the appropriate therapy. But now that it's made such inroads among lower income white people, instead of a crime it's now a tragic affliction and worthy of treatment. -

Here's a better chart for life expectancy because it compares comparable nations. https://www.healthsystemtracker.org/chart-collection/u-s-life-expectancy-compare-countries/#Life expectancy at birth, in years, 1980-2023 Anyone notice how much more of a toll covid took on the USA? This despite the fact that most comparable countries actually have higher average age than does the USA. Just maybe it had something to do with lower covid vaccination rates? -

Life is just awful outside the USA As noted above, virtually every economically developed nation has higher left expectancies than the USA. But, on the other hand the USA wins when it comes to health care costs -

When I saw the topic on the soapbox landing page I was alarmed that Finland was being attacked by leftists. After all, Finns come in at #1 in the happiness ratings. So I thought that should make Finland the greatest. But Finland ranks only a measly 31st in life expectancy. Then I thought, maybe Hong Kong which has the highest average life expectancy or, since Hong Kong is kind of small, maybe Japan at #2 is the greatest nation on earth. So you can imagine my shock when riclag of all people nominated the USA for that honor. Who could have seen that one coming? Was it because the USA has the lowest average life expectancy out of all the worlds fully developed economies, sandwiched at 48th between Albania and Estonia? Or was it because it it has the highest health care costs per capita? Anyway, go Team USA! USA! USA! USA!... And to heck with you losers. That's right, I'm talking to you, Japan, and you Finland. And especially to you leftists. You dudes don't understand what winning really means and what life is all about.- 350 replies
