This is about as false as any historical generalization can be. Actually the people who came to America in the heyday of immigration were mostly poor people fleeing the vastly unequal societies of Europe. Scots feeling the enclosure laws, Germans fleeing conscription, religious persecution, and limited agricultural opportunities, the Irish fleeing famine and the miserable status inflicted on them as Catholics by the British, Jews fleeing persecution and unequal treatment, Slavs fleeing their general miserable economic status and so on. It was in America that they got educated and that was due to the influence of the Founding Fathers who strongly promoted public education. When de Tocqueville came to America he was astonished by the high level of literacy he found among most Americans, not just the wealthy.
