  1. "Almost" happened to me at Siam Paragon's AEON.

Card got stuck 2 times until... I changed the amount from XX,900 baht (coz I wanted change) to a flat XX,000 baht! It then worked perfectly.

It seems that the card gets stuck ONLY IF you ask for bills which are not available in the machine at the time.

The machine does NOT tell you that the smaller bills aren't available, and instead your card gets stuck.

Stick to asking for 1,000 bill amounts and I think you'll be fine.

  2. Note that it's 250 per day and "fraction" of a day (if after a full 24-hour period).

So if your car is there for 25 hours, you'll be charged for 2 full days.

I made this mistake before and it hurt a (little) bit.

I was expecting to pay 1 day 250 + 2 hours 50 baht = Total of 300. But it came out 500 instead.

She wasn't cheating me, it came out in the computer-printed receipt.

  3. NATO commanders should now be charges with crimes against humanity.

Now Gaddaffi should also be charged with murder of children (his own grandchildren).

His actions made it justified and moral for NATO to attack, and now this is the result.

Actually, going by Gaddafi's history, he was probably using his own grandchildren as "human shields".

  4. The funniest thing about this thread is it's so obvious that the secret "owners" of other pizza joints feel threatened by the opening-post's mere pizza suggestion, and keep using their "mirror accounts" to trash the pizza they haven't even tried or seen; and push their own.

Next step: They'll pretend they've tried the opening post pizza and trash it some more... then push their own as "unbiased" third parties (using, again, their "mirror accounts")

  5. Careful about the "high" interest "specials" in Thai Banks, which give low interest in the beginning but gradually increase to a high interest in the later months.

You need to compute the IRR or "internal rate of return" to determine the "effective" or "real, true" interest you'll actually be getting.

*Not as simple as "averaging" the high and low interest rates; you'll mislead yourself that way.

Most people don't know how (or bother) to compute the IRR, so the banks profit more this way.

(But Bangkok Bank's website seems to honestly say the actual "average" interest, so that's good)

IRR calculator (you'll need to compute the actual cash inflow yourself based on the interest, and then and input here):

  6. While I am not sure I agree with how the police handled this situation, I can certainly understand that there comes a time when the perpetrator is so dangerous that he has to be stopped. Imagine if he was driving the car at high speed straight into a crowd of children. Then, hostage or no hostage, he has to be shot and stopped.

To the former Police or COPS in the forum.

I'm just curious, what happens in "developed" countries when a cop "unintentionally" or "mistakenly" shoots/kills an innocent person; and/or when a cop needs to make a sensitive "judgment call" to shoot and an innocent victim is killed ?

    1) Suspended?

    2) Fired?

    3) Criminally charged?

    4) Cover-up?

    5) Slap on the Wrist

    Just curious

  7. This is probably the marketing dept's attempt to get "demographic info" for more "targeted" marketing.

Yes, it is kinda annoying and if it annoys me enough, I'll just leave.

What's most laughable though is the seemingly "extreme emotional stress" that this tiny nuisance brought you, and your equally great efforts to rant about it.

  8. A recent study into HIV/Aids transmission has uncovered a case where a couple transmitted the virus to each other after each had been infected by their secret lovers.

    Great journalism from The Nation.

Was even able to find out that each couple member got infected (and then each miraculously cured?), and then re-infected by each other (by each of whom were already cured?).

  9. In terms of 'respect', I would think teaching business has much more prestige.

Nope, I don't look down on English teaching at all; but the overall image in the country seems to have been pulled down by the numerous English language "schools" which employ a lot of so called "native speakers" (read: whites who can't speak/write English).

However, I believe this only to be true for business teachers who have been in business themselves; whether in the past or at the same time while teaching.

Today's youth are very clever and can spot right away (and gossip behind your back) if a business teacher is merely a "career business teacher" who went straight to teaching business without any real experience; and who merely teaches (or rather, reads) the textbook to the class without any practical inference to his/her own experience in the real business world.

  10. I discovered an American sportsbar in Bangkok with HUGE pizza (just like in the states).

Around a 17" large pie for less than 500 baht (but as high as 799 for their 3-sausage topping). Pepperoni pizza was 539 I think.

Run by 2 jolly-old American guys. Name is "Brunswick" bar or something like that.

However, it's a bit hard to get to. It's on the right, in a side-soi along Ramkamhaeng 24, just before ABAC's old campus if you're coming from Ramkamhaeng main road. Take bus 537 from Victory Monument, or take the red truck (song taew) or taxi from the corner of Ramkamhaeng main road and Ramkamhaeng Soi 24.

They also have other American favorites (which I haven't tried yet) such as 1/2 pounder burgers, American hotdogs, etc. They also sell those "beer towers" (I dunno how many gallons of beer is in one, but saw it and it's huge).

I found it via this 'groupon style' deal using Thai City Deals (but sorry, this deal is expired and gone. But you can see the old deal here):

I also attached pictures of the pizza below, and I put my hand beside it so you can estimate the size.

Crust was great, cheese was great, pizza sauce was great too!

    Will be back!
