  1. Hi,

I have searched the forum for this topic but did not find anything.

My 1-year extension of stay based on business is expiring on March 9. Usually immigration will not extend immediately

when you apply but rather allow you to stay for another month while your application is under consideration before finally

approving it. Now, I need to travel during this consideration period and what I understand is that when I return, I will only

get the standard 30 days and therefore loose my current status of being here on a 1-year extension. Is there any way to

avoid this? Thanks for any advice.

  2. Shutdown is lightning fast, well below 30 seconds.

:o I recall when PC's had a switch that physically shut off power like a light. THAT was fast.

:D Good one... but seriously it takes between 20 and 25 seconds to complete shutdown.

  3. Vista Home Premium 32 bit, Intel Core Duo 3.0 GHz, 3 GB Ram, Nvidia 8600 GT 256 MB.

OS startup is about 1 minute even with Aero and Sidebar enabled, it takes approx. 2 minutes

until the machine is ready to go with Antivirus, etc.... loaded. Shutdown is lightning fast,

    well below 30 seconds.

No problems with video or audio but I miss a few freeware programs I used to convert

videos and audio under XP. They are not developed any longer, thus there is no Vista compatible

version ( the only reason why I currently run Vista in dualboot configuration with XP Pro.

Opening programs, aside from the additional UAC click, is reasonably fast. File transfer seems

a lot slower than in XP, especially when transfering from a USB flash drive. No BSOD so far,

overall I am very happy with Vista, just need to find some suitable apps for video and audio

conversion/editing to eliminate the need for dualboot.

  4. Well, all I know is that I had UBC cable for 2 years without any problems. Since I moved to a new place and had to change to UBC satellite, there are always

cutouts when it rains. Love that, especially when watching Formula 1... :o

Internet is a whole different story. Former UBC is now True Visions and this business unit has nothing to do with True Internet. You need a True telehone line to get

most out of your internet connection if using True as a provider.

  5. Hi,

A question to the gurus out there, so here is the situation:

I have XP Pro and Vista Home Premium in a dual boot configuration. Both OS are installed on two separate partitions (C: and D:) on one physical 320 GB disk.

Now, since Vista works great, I want to use it as the only OS on the computer. My idea is to delete both partitions, create a new single one to get the full disk

capacity back and then do a clean install of Vista on it. What is the best way to do it? I have Acronis Disk Director Suite on hand, so my idea is to boot from it's

Boot CD, delete both partitions on that disk, create a new single one and then install Vista. Any suggestions?

  6. I was only wondering how Thanni can be so much cheaper with 7,480 Baht

for Vista Ultimate compared to some 8,700 Baht at shop4thai.

Shop4Thai is generally more expensive then Thanni for several items. I believe Thanni buys direct from the distributor so perhaps explains the lower price.

Ok, I'll double check again some shops in Panthip and Fortune. If there is much difference, I better order from Thanni.

  7. That may be the lower price as believe there was a large decrease very recently on Microsoft products. Home Premium was about 5,400 at Fortune last year when I bought it.

You are right, Microsoft has decreased the prices when the Service Pack 1 RTM was released, but I noticed that some shops

at Fortune still sell Home Premium at the same price you bought it for last year. :o Old stock.... probably)

  8. Those prices actually are about right. I've ordered from them several times but not software. Actually I believe Shop4Thai has a much larger selection. Here are the OEM prices from them > http://www.shop4thai.com/en/category/Softw...tware/?brand=41

I would have to say they are legitimate or else the prices would be a couple of hundred baht. :o

Thanks for the link Tywais. The shop4thai prices are at about Panthip level for a genuine OS, so it's

easier to buy there directly. I was only wondering how Thanni can be so much cheaper with 7,480 Baht

for Vista Ultimate compared to some 8,700 Baht at shop4thai.

  9. Hi,

Yesterday I took a look at www.thanni.com which is supposed to be Thailand's largest online computer store.

They are also selling operating systems (under the software section) but the prices are unbelievably cheap.

Vista Home Premium sells at only 3,750 Baht, Vista Ultimate at 7,480 Baht and Office 2007 Standard at 6,550 Baht.

They do not mention which flavour of OS it is (supposed to be OEM at this price) but the pictures on the site show the

retail versions. Does anyone have any experience with Thanni in this regard and is the stuff genuine?

    Thanks in advance.

  10. Yes, my PC is working right now. I am still checking all the bits and pieces. My firewall (Comodo) should be trained again.

I also noticed that in System Properties window, General Tab it is reported as Service Pack 3. v.3311

Rather than that, if I discover some more info, I will let you know.

    v. 3311 is a previous release candidate, not the final RTM version, this might explain your problems during install.

Look at the screen shots in my previous post. The final RTM is the 5512 build. Since the official version will be available

on Windows Update tomorrow (in Thailand on Wednesday morning), I would suggest to uninstall the RC and download

the real thing from MS directly.

  11. Hello :o

Anyone having an idea how much it is in Bangkok now? Seeing and having bought Vista Ultimate (three times, for myself and two guys i built the machines for) at 20.000 Baht and now knowing that in the U.S. it's just over 6.000 Baht makes me wonder..... would it be legal to buy it online in the U.S. and have it shipped here? I mean heck, it cost's more than three times it's original price HERE!!

If M$ were intelligent they would offer it for the same price all over the world.... no wonder the Panthip versions are so popular here. I think at the more realistic 6k more people would buy the genuine version....... you don't even get XP Pro (full) for that price here!

    Best regards....

    Thanh

I don't know the current price of Vista Ultimate in Bangkok, but I see no reason why it should be illegal to

purchase in the US and ship it here.

  12. I am far from being an expert, but I would go for a combined router modem. I have recently bought the Linksys WAG200G

router modem (2,900 Baht). Took me 5 minutes to set it up and get the connection running, very very easy.

The desktop PC is connected permanently via LAN cable and if required, I hook on wireless with the laptop.

If you have a modem and a separate router, you will have to troubleshoot two devices when problems arise.

  13. Yes they are certainly cutting back, as a Thai Gold I did not receive my usual birthday offers this year, not sure if that is because I now live in Thailand and not the UK>

Did you update your profile to your address in Thailand?

I still get something (also living in Thailand) but since 2 years the are also massively cutting back on these offers too.

It used to be a nice package including special deals with hotels, car rentals, etc. (although I never used them),

but best of it was a free round trip upgrade to the next class on any flight of your choice (even long-haul).

Now, the only thing I got was to redeem an award with 50% discount on the actual milage required during

    the birthday month :o
