  1. Not a pro, but could be that your file associations are a bit messed up.

    Try the following:

Right-click on any MS-Word file and choose "Open with", then "Choose program"

In the menu that opens up select "Microsoft Word" and mark the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file".

Do the same for any picture files (jpg, bmp, etc.) which are supposed to be opened with your photo suite. In addition, you may look under settings or preferences of the photo suite for some way to associate these file types to it.

  2. Of course if hiding from the CIA is your goal, what you really need it to grind the disk into powder and replace it. If you just don't want the next owner recovering your personal info, you'll be fine with Eraser. :D

:o Agree with cdnvic. Btw: I want to give away a 40 GB disk. Do I really need to overwrite 7 times or is 3 times sufficient to prevent the next user recovering data?

  3. waldwolf, according to the posts in the Technet forum it seems to be quite tricky.

Some people got it working, some not. Nevertheless, I will try it myself anyway

but need to wait about a week or so until my brother gets his internet connection.

reimar, this seems to be a good option. I will give it a try in case remote assistance

    does not work.

Thanks very much for the help and the links guys.

    regards,

  4. My brother has just bought a new laptop with Vista Home Premium installed. However, he has never used a computer in his life before, so I see some major disasters coming up :o

My question is: Can I use Remote Assistance to connect to his computer and help him solving some problems? I am running XP Pro.

    thanks,

    crockett

  5. NOD32 - very good, Zonealarm Pro - ok, does the job. As for Spyware Doctor, I have used it before but found it to be very heavy on the memory. The computer needed ages to start up because of all the signatures and monitors loading. I am now using Spy Sweeper which is much lighter. I like it.

  6. I recently switched from Outlook Express to Mozilla Thunderbird and love it. I would like to set up Thunderbird so that my message folders are located in a folder that I back up regularly to an external drive. I have not been able to figure how to do that. I would be very grateful if anyone could advise me on the best way to accomplish that task.

    I'm using this one: http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/

    Nice little tool :o

  7. rice_king, I followed your instructions but there seems no way to re-format the drive to FAT.

I've also googled for this subject and most replies are negative.

Anyway, thanks to all of you for your help but I better cut the losses and buy a new one.

Saves me a lot of headaches too ... :o

  8. Thanks rice_king for the great reply, one reason why I love this forum.

The flash drive is recognized under Computer Management but it still cannot be formatted. So

I booted with a Win98 Boot Disk and the Bios shows the USB drive. I will follow your instructions

    further and keep you posted.

    Thanks,

  9. Thanks for your quick replies.

I am using the drive already for a year or so without any problems.

This is the first time I see that message. Anyway, when I try to format

it I get another message "Windows was unable to complete the format".

  10. Hi all,

I backed up some files from another computer to a USB thumb drive. Now, when I plug the drive

into my own Laptop running Win XP Pro SP2 (legal) the drive is recognized and I can see the drive

letter in "My Computer". However, when trying to access it, now I get the message that it is not

    formatted yet.

    Any ideas anybody?

  11. Has anyone assembled their own external hard drive? Any suggestions/advice?

I've assembled probably 15-20 external drives and this is my preference and cautions. Be sure it has an internal fan for the drive. I prefer the ones with the internal power supply, just uses an AC cord plugged directly in with no external brick. Have the shop assemble and verify it. I've had problems with boxes that could not handle large capacity drives (power supply not sufficient). An example, two boxes worked fine with 80GB but putting in 250GB, disk would not spin up.

these issues can be avoided by getting a 2.5' hdd (laptop HDD) and external case. Heat is less and can be powered from USB.

Thats right, only thing is you don't get the capacity of the 3.5' drives.
