US: I regret not getting a passport card when I renewed my passport
I just had my US PP stolen. I'll be OK because I have photos of the PP, my BC official copy, and a valid Driver License. When I file my replacement application I plan to get the card too. If I had any less IDs with me I could have been in a pickle. When you're on the other side of the planet from your home country, more IDs is more better. A nice thing about the card is it doesn't expire every 4 years like a DL. If you aren't paying attention that DL could turn up expired just when you need it the most. Also, if something does happen to the PP, the whole process of getting an appointment at the Embassy and them sending your application back to the SFZ to have your replacement PP printed, and then they Thai Post it to you, takes a couple months or so. Luckily, I don't need to travel or conduct business with Thai Immigration for the next 2 months. But I can see how having the card could save the day under some circumstances. I recommend anyone that doesn't have one to make the effort to get one now. Don't wait until renewal time. Lightning might strike sooner. You could be real glad you did.

What da flippin heck will be built on that cleared Jomtien land?
The land was cram full of squatters. The shacks you saw up by the road were just the tip of the iceberg. The first phase of the operation was to clear the squatters. They were given a week notice. Then workmen came in and demolished the shacks and put all the remaining belongings along the sidewalk for the owners to claim. The next day the bulldozers came and scoured the squatter zone first. The evening of that day I walked over and I found over a hundred bewildered dogs sitting all over the cleared areas wondering where their owners went. And also probably wondering what happened to dinner. The dogs were gone the next day. Here's the closest to insider info I have. On the day of the demolition some of the supervisors came over to the pharmacy across the street to make a purchase. I happen to know the pharmacist lady there and what she learned was this: 1. The land is owned by either a TV news personality or maybe the TV station owner. I couldn't figure out her English, sorry. 2. The owner was allowing the squatters to live there. Was that out of the kindness of his heart or neglect? I don't know. 3. Yes, the owner had to clear the land because of the tax implications of unmaintained land. The bulldozers kept at it and, in less than a week, they cleared the entire plot. Yesterday they were planting saplings. A Thai identified them to me as coconut trees. The information provided earlier in this thread about taxation of agricultural vs commercial land lines up with what I was told a week ago. I believe that to be the primary motivator. And a secondary motivation might have been the owner being advised of the risk of squatters being able to gain rights to the land if not dealt with. Also, I agree the coconut trees are the owner's strategy to keep taxes low while waiting for a deal to come together (or, at least, for construction to begin). I do worry about what might be built there. Thappraya road is not able to handle even a little more traffic. Also, I don't want to see monstrous condo buildings blocking the view to the sea. I would like to see small shops and services that make the area more livable. However I'm sure the bean counters wouldn't consider that the best way to maximize income from the property. However, I do have an idea for this large property that I think no one has thought of yet. Ok, think if it: Ganja shops as far as the eye can see! Hey, you wanted jokes...

Corrections Department Defends Thaksin Family Photo Policy
I just studied the google map in detail on max magnification. The 3-sided moat is intended to be a barrier, is not maintained to be pretty, and appears to have green overgrowth over most of it. There are a number of smaller bodies of water on the campus but they appear to be small, surrounded by fauna, and just wouldn't match the photo. Also, I can't find any flower gardens or red-tiled walk paths. Granted, there's lots that might not show up on a low-res google image. But I have to agree with the previous posters that this photo probably has them red-handed off on a field trip. It's good to be Tony. EDIT: They probably just stepped out of his fave restaurant to take the photo. One has to wonder just how often this has been happening. And does he cry when its time to take him back?

Locked out of Lazada and others
I use Lazada and Aliexpress but Shopee is dead to me because of the same phone number issue. When I started phone service with AIS the number given to me had already been registered to Shopee by the former user of the number. I tried everything but there simply is no path to resolution. There has to be thousands of potential customers locked out of these shopping apps over this ridiculous issue which must be costing the app companies a mountain of money. They've had years to recognize this problem and come up with a solution but nothing changes. Incompetence on a colossal scale. I imagine that over time the entire pool of Thailand phone numbers will have been registered once to these apps. After that these dumbf*cks will be wondering why they don't get any new customers.

Getting a laptop sent from Europe to Thailand - In three days!
Either you were very lucky or I was very unlucky. I had a personal laptop shipped from US to here using UPS. It took a few days to get here to Customs and then they held it in limbo for a week until I paid a "logistics" company to go there, grease all the palms, and get it released immediately. It was not cheap. I won't bore you with the long story but the whole experience was a nightmare. I will never do that again and don't recommend it to anyone. Instead, for expensive items, wait for friends or family to make a trip to Thailand and have them bring in their luggage.

Is it possible to rehabilitate a bargirl back into polite society?
I found this to be the rule with house/roommates while at university regardless of gender. I spent 9 years working through college and had an endless variety of living arrangements. It generally took six months to find out what was really going on with a roommate vs the story presented in the beginning. Rather than a bargirl/female thing, I have this filed under "Basic Human Nature" with the takeaway being almost everybody be fronting.

Wise transfers
Today I was able to make my transfer in SECONDS. It looks like everything is back to normal with Wise and their amazing service. I am going to assume that whatever obstacles they were facing previously were overcome by a great deal of effort on their part and I thank them and congratulate them for it.

Wise transfers
Update: I just tried preview testing using the other of my 2 USA bank accounts (rather than the one I've been testing with the last few days) and the quote was for only 4 hours. I have no idea why this would be the case but I'll take it. I now have a transfer in process that should complete in the promised 4 hours. This has made me less unhappy and hopeful that things will be back to normal by my next regular transfer date. Pro tip: it can be very helpful to have more than one bank account in your home country to send from.

Wise transfers
I normally transfer a largish amount of money from USA to TH KBank every 2 weeks on Friday afternoon. Normally the transfer happens in seconds. Sometimes I'm told I will have to wait until Tuesday. But I figured out the delay is on larger amounts and I overcome this by breaking the amount in half and sending from 2 different USA bank accounts in 2 transfers. I don't really need the transfer in seconds but waiting until Tuesday is not acceptable. While the speed is nice the main benefit is the low fees. This has been reliable this way for the last 2 years now. This past Friday everything changed. You can plug different amounts into the preview in the app and all amounts down to 100 USD, and probably less, could only be scheduled for Wednesday May 20. So I was forced to use my US debit card at an ATM and got absolutely slaughtered on the exchange rate and fees. Damn shameless bandits. So I figured this was a weekend issue and kept testing the 100 USD transfer time every day. And it has only gotten worse. Now it's quoting Thursday May 29 as the earliest! So it looks like this is not going back to normal any time soon. The Wise week wait is unacceptable but so is the debit card thievery. I don't know what to do. Is anyone else experiencing this? Is it just me? Can anyone suggest alternatives more palatable then debit card rape? Does anyone know what blew up at Wise to collapse their transfer times? How long will it take for them to erase their "in seconds" promise from their home page?

Drain fly problem.
In my condo one of the showers has this problem. I hang a Hunter's Fly Strip up high in the corner of the shower. It's a glue strip that traps them with no effort on my part. I also keep an inverted plastic bowl over the drain opening when the shower is not in use. I kick it aside at the start of a shower and move it back at the end. In addition I keep a bottle of glass cleaner spray to shoot down the one or two enemy I might see during the shower. These measures keep the problem well in check but don't resolve it. I'll give the suggested vinegar and baking soda a try.

Ex-Police Chief's Wife Suspected of Seeking UK Citizenship to Escape Charges
I'm sorry Mike, but this is Thailand. If they are outed, instead of humiliation, they will be subjected to jealous envy. There is no western-style justice being served here. This is simply a power struggle with winners and losers. Thaksin is cleaning house from behind the scenes to make room for his loyalists and consolidate his return to power. As they say, sit back and enjoy the show. 🍿
